DNS, what is it? Yandex.DNS Safe home Internet.

We are all pleased when the browser works quickly, smoothly and immediately finds the necessary information.

This is exactly what resources were created for. What is DNS?

What are the benefits of using Yandex.DNS? Let's figure it out.

DNS - what is it?

The abbreviation DNS stands for Domain Name System, in Russian it is the Domain Name System.

Domains- these are, simply put, names or addresses by which sites, services, users, and so on are distinguished.

Each registered entity on the Internet has its own domain name.

The Domain Name System combines these addresses into a single database, which significantly speeds up the search.

Domain system Yandex has access to more than 80 DNS in various countries.

This system, when a request arrives, transfers the user to the nearest service, thanks to which the information is processed faster.

We get faster search and fast loading sites.

This can be compared to many books neatly laid out and organized on countless shelves, and in a whole series of rooms.

And Yandex.DNS, as an experienced custodian who knows by what system everything is distributed, therefore, it quickly decides which room a person needs to be sent to so that he can quickly find what he is looking for, then to which rack, row, and so on.

This is, of course, much more effective than searching the right book in an ordinary book pile.

Advantages of Yandex.DNS

In addition to download speed, Yandex.DNS performs protective functions.For example:

  • protects against malicious codes
  • protects against burglars
  • protects against financial fraud
  • blocks “adult” pages

Yandex.DNS has been operating since 2013. You can run this system in any of the three proposed modes. So there is:

Let's look at these points in more detail. First, let's talk about modes.

Basic mode

By selecting this mode, you will get accelerated access to sites and fast loading of pages without any filtering.

There will be no checking for viruses, hacking, harmful or obscene information.

This mode suitable for those, whose resource is already protected, but who is only interested in the speed of processing requests.

If your resource still needs additional protection, choose a different mode.

Safe mode

In this mode, Yandex checks traffic for the presence of malicious encodings created to extort money, hacking sites that steal passwords and codes.

If something suspicious is detected when loading onto your resource, the service blocks the dangerous site and stops loading the page.

You will receive a warning and information about exactly why the connection was interrupted.

Family mode

This mode includes the functions "Safe", but in addition to protecting the system, it also protects the user’s family from various obscene and immoral information.

This is especially important for those who have children. It is not so easy to explain to children which sites are useful to visit and which are not and why.

IN "Family" mode, Yandex will block any content filled with information and materials of erotic and pornographic content.

Not only will your children not end up on an obscene page, but they will also not see obscene advertising.

You can simply visit innocent sites for handicrafts, tourism, or use them and pick up a viral code on your resource.

To protect the user's system from such attacks, Yandex. DNS blocks pages containing a potential threat to your system and warns about the threat.

Hacking threat

Some scammers can hack your resource and connect to it in order to access other services from it.

Such criminals create bots to steal keys, break security, break passwords, send malicious codes.

Bots can remain in the shadows for a long time and the owner of the resource may not know anything about the fact that his system is being blatantly used.

As you can see, the connection for Android is made through the Wi-Fi settings.

Connections are made in a similar way from other mobile systems. The differences will only be in the nuances.

Yandex.DNS is a Yandex service aimed primarily at page loading speed, protection against viruses and adult materials. Yandex contains several (about 80) DNS servers around the world that cope well with the tasks assigned to them.

How Yandex.DNS works

There are 3 modes of working with the service:

  1. Basic mode- aimed precisely at increasing the speed of the Internet connection, which does not go through your provider’s server, but through the nearest Yandex DNS server
  2. Safe mode- it includes the first and plus does not provide access to potentially infected sites. Sometimes you can catch a virus on a trusted site. If you try to open such a site, Yandex.DNS in “Safe” and “Family” mode will stop loading data and show the user a warning. To scan and block such sites, Yandex uses its antivirus, specially designed for these purposes.
  3. Family mode- It includes the first 2 and blocks all sites with “adult 18+” content. This is primarily done to protect children from such content, although it can also be used against some adults who abuse such content :)

Also, in safe and family modes there is a function to protect against bot actions. On this moment Every day many bots are written that can easily steal website material, infect them and obtain personal data by gaining access to the server. Yandex.DNS blocks all attempts and work of such bots.

How to connect any of the Yandex DNS modes described above

The easiest way for me personally is to change Internet Protocol version 4. Enter the dns of your selected connection mode with the server in the fields shown in the picture below.

DNS Internet filter is an Internet service that allows you to filter unwanted servers on the Internet based on their domain names. For example, the site www.virus.org spreads a virus to the computers of users who access it. If such a user has a DNS-based Internet filter connected, then instead of the infected site the user will see a message about blocking the dangerous site. The same thing will happen with a fake site that tries to steal your social media passwords or credit card numbers.

Another area of application for such filters is child safety on the Internet. Such services allow you to block not only sites with pornography and violence, but also sites containing any links to them. As a bonus, some Internet filters can also block annoying online advertising.

A significant advantage is that there is no need to install any software to the protected computer. All you need to do is set the desired DNS address server, which will act as a filter.

How does a DNS filter work?

Very simplified it looks like this:

  1. The user enters the website address in the browser bar.
  2. The computer converts the site's symbolic address to an IP address using dns service. Thus, a request with the site address is sent to the filter server.
  3. If the site’s address on the DNS server is not on the black list, then the user’s computer is given the IP address of the server serving the site and the user receives the site’s contents in the browser window.
  4. If the site’s address is on the DNS server’s blacklist, then the user is given the IP address of a special web server, which displays a message in the user’s browser window about the site being blocked.

As you can see, everything is simple and generally quite effective. The scope of these services is not limited to home PCs. If you are an enterprise network administrator, then these services will become additional protection your network, just configure the resolution of Internet addresses of your network through a DNS filter. You can also use filtering on mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets.

Public DNS filters

Today there are many similar services and most of them offer filtering capabilities for free. Many antivirus companies have their own private and public DNS filters. Next, I will list the most famous public services that have already been tested by time and people.

  1. Public DNS Google server. This server was essentially created not for filtering, but to speed up the Internet due to very fast resolving, but in addition, public DNS from Google also filters phishing and malicious servers. In addition, this server can work over IPv6
    Google DNS addresses:
    IPv4 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4
    IPv6 2001:4860:4860::8888, 2001:4860:4860::8844
  2. OpenDNS— perhaps the oldest DNS filter. There are paid and free features. It can correct incorrectly typed website addresses, and also displays a page with search and advertising if the address could not be corrected automatically. Has profiles for Parental Control available for free after registration. Without registration, fast resolution and filtering of malicious servers is declared.
    OpenDNS DNS addresses:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    https://www.opendns.com/
  3. SkyDNS— one of the first domestic services. There are paid and free plans. There is a possibility manual compilation black and white lists, blocking sites by category, ad blocking, statistics. On free plan capabilities for manual blocking have been reduced, statistics are only for a month, etc. Without registration, the service filters only phishing and malicious sites. There are opportunities parental controls by filtering dangerous sites and replacing search engines with Safe search from SkyDNS. Account management on the website or through an application installed on a computer running Windows.
    SkyDNS DNS Address:
    193.58.251.251
    http://www.skydns.ru
  4. Yandex.DNS. Public DNS filter from the domestic search giant. No registration required. Involves 3 usage scenarios 1) Fast and reliable resolution 2) Resolving + filtering of dangerous servers 3) Resolving + filtering of dangerous servers + role control. Search engine data is used to compile blacklists. The server supports IPv6.
    Yandex DNS server addresses:
    Basic IPv4 77.88.8.8, 77.88.8.1, IPv6 2a02:6b8::feed:0ff, 2a02:6b8:0:1::feed:0ff
    Secure IPv4 77.88.8.88, 77.88.8.2, IPv6 2a02:6b8::feed:bad, 2a02:6b8:0:1::feed:bad
    Family IPv4 77.88.8.7, 77.88.8.3, IPv6 2a02:6b8::feed:a11, 2a02:6b8:0:1::feed:a11

  5. Norton ConnectSafe. Secure servers DNS from Symantec. As in the case of Yadnex, registration is not required for personal use. It has a similar structure of servers in 3 categories: 1) Safe 2) Safe and porn 3) Safe, Porn and other things undesirable for children.
    Norton DNS addresses:
    Secure: 199.85.126.10, 199.85.127.10
    Safe+Porn: 199.85.126.20, 199.85.127.20
    Parental control: 199.85.126.30, 199.85.127.30
    https://dns.norton.com/

This list is, of course, not complete, but these are, in my opinion, the most interesting and popular servers that should be used as the first line of filtering and home defense computer network or enterprise networks. It is important to understand that the use of these services in no way excludes the need to use modern and up-to-date antivirus tools, such as Kaspersky Anti-Virus, for example;).

Which DNS filter to choose?

You may be wondering which of these services to choose. From personal experience I can recommend the following selection algorithm:

  • By speed: SkyDNS, Google, Yandex
  • By functionality SkyDNS, OpenDNS
  • Security Security Yandex, Norton, Google

To test the performance of the DNS servers described above, I used the DNS Benchmark utility, the results are sorted by response time.

As you can see from my network, SkyDNS turned out to be the fastest, followed by Google, then Yandex servers (With full filters for parental controls). The situation on your network or at other times of the day may differ. It's best to test each service yourself! Each service has its own algorithms for constructing blacklists, so there is a possibility of false blocking of trusted sites. In my opinion, Yandex servers look like a good middle ground.

Write in the comments what you think about this! I will be glad to have links to other similar services and authoritative (supported by arguments) critical statements on the topic.

To make the Internet more secure, the Yandex search engine constantly checks sites for viruses, phishing and other fraud. Today we will tell you how to protect your computer from Internet dangers using Yandex DNS servers.

There are a number of servers with different levels of access security for the user.

  • Basic – the simplest from a security point of view
  • Safe - the name speaks for itself
  • Yandex Family DNS - the most secure server

Description of Yandex DNS servers

The first service from the list above is basic, its IP addresses are 77.88.8.8 and 77.88.8.1. U of this server The content (site) filtering function is completely disabled. However, this does not mean that it is useless for the user. Different servers Yandex are located in different regions of Russia, so using DNS data you can try to increase Internet speed (as written in).

The second service is safe, its server addresses are 77.88.8.8 and 77.88.8.2. Using DNS data, the user will be able to view only those sites that have been fully crawled antivirus scanner Yandex company. In addition, all sites that can be visited using these servers are checked for phishing and fraud by their owners. In other words, DNS data provides safe use Internet.

And finally, the third service is called “Family”, its addresses are 77.88.8.7 and 77.88.8.3. These servers not only have all the properties of the “Safe” service, but also perform the function of parental control and protect children from viewing inappropriate content(adult content).

All of the Yandex servers described above are available completely free of charge for use.

Setting up DNS Yandex. Browsing the Internet in Safe Mode

In order to use Yandex servers and protect your computer when visiting Internet sites, you need to configure the operating system, or router, if you are using one. Windows Settings 7, Vista and Windows 8 are practically no different, except by opening the “View Network Status” window. We have already written on our website how to configure the network to use the secure Internet in Windows 8. Therefore, today we will analyze this action using the example of seven.

So, click on the “Start” button and in the main window that opens Windows menu go to “Control Panel”.

In the newly opened dialog box, go to the connection properties by clicking on “Properties”. Next, in the list of components, find and highlight the line “Internet Protocol Version 4” and click on the “Properties” button again.

In the protocol properties, activate the radio button “Use the following DNS server addresses” and enter the addresses of one of the three services described above. In our example, we entered the addresses of the servers in the most secure mode, that is, family dns yandex. Check the “Confirm settings on exit” checkbox and click “Ok”.

Close everything open windows and restart your computer. That's all, now, when you log in and try to open any site that does not meet the Yandex security policy (contains viruses, adult content, fraudulent, etc.), you will not succeed. Use the Internet in safe mode!

Yandex.DNS, what is it?

This is a service that allows you to block access to sites with dangerous content, and also blocks sites with content for persons over 18 years of age.

After a detailed study, we can highlight the following interesting features:

  1. the service regularly updates databases of sites with malicious content;
  2. thanks to this, your computer will be well protected from viruses when visiting sites on the Internet;
  3. additionally protects children from viewing sites with adult content;
  4. Quite simple connection. It consists of changing the DNS on a PC or other device that is connected to the Internet. And most importantly, there is no need to install additional applications.

For example, if all devices are connected through access via wireless point Wi-Fi, then in the settings on the router itself, you need to change the DNS addresses to those provided by the service. After this, all devices that connect to this point will be protected from any bad sites.

Well, if the Internet is connected directly to the computer, then all settings are changed directly on this PC. All these actions are performed quite simply and further, we will consider each option in detail.

First, you need to visit the website of this service, which is located at: https://dns.yandex.ru/. Here we see three columns with DNS addresses, for different levels filtration. We choose the one that suits us. If you select one of the three provided filters, the level of protection provided by the service will be shown at the top.

Another pretty one interesting feature, Yandex releases own firmware(update) for Wi-Fi router ov, where everything is already there necessary settings. Currently DNS from Yandex is preinstalled on D-Link routers DIR-615 / DIR-620 and ZyXEL Keenetic series. In the near future, firmware is expected for other models and manufacturers of routers. Although, it is most reliable to change the settings manually; it is not difficult, but it is much safer.

  • 77.88.8.8 - simple DNS, without filtering, but at high speed.
  • 77.88.8.88 - blocking access to sites with dangerous content and scam sites.
  • 77.88.8.7 - in addition to dangerous resources, it also blocks sites with erotic content.

Setting up Yandex.DNS on your computer

When you have only one PC and it is connected to the Internet using a twisted pair (cable), or you want to protect only specific computer, you must specify new address DNS configured network connection. Take a look at the notification panel, there will be an Internet icon there. Click on it right click and open the section with the following name: “Control Center shared access and networks."

You need to open “Change adapter settings”.

Then look, depending on your connection type you need to do the following:

- you are connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi - open properties wireless connections(right click on the shortcut and select “Properties”);

- the computer is connected to the Internet using twisted pair - go to the properties of local connections.

In these properties, you need to select the TCP/IPv4 protocol from the list and click on the properties button. Now check the box next to “Use the following DNS server addresses.” Enter the “Preferred DNS” field by typing the new address from Yandex.DNS and click the “OK” button, then “OK” again.

That's it, your computer is now protected from sites with dangerous content.

Setting up Yandex.DNS on a smartphone

Many mobile devices(especially those running Android OS) allow you to change and configure DNS settings. For example, let's look at how to do this on HTC One V, it has a mobile phone installed on it operating system Android, version 4.0.

And so, we need to go to settings Wi-Fi connections. Find the access point there that works this device, press and hold it. A menu will open, in it you need to click “Change network”. There will be an item “Advanced options”, put a “checkbox” next to it and scroll down. Click on “DHCP”, then select “Static”.

Scroll down to the “DNS 1” item. Here we enter the DNS from Yandex that you need and then click “Save.

Ready! Your phone is protected.

Configuring Yandex.DNS on a wireless Wi-Fi adapter

There is nothing complicated. As an example, we will have TP-Link router TL-WR843N. In the browser, in the address bar, you need to type: 192.168.1.1. You will be transferred to the admin panel of the Wi-Fi router. In case of an error that does not allow you to enter the settings, look at the address at the bottom of the router - yours may be different. Now you need to enter the data in the lines for login and password. If you haven’t changed it since you purchased the router, the default login information will be “admin” and “admin”. After authorization, open the “Network” - “WAN” tab.

Next to “Use These DNS Servers” we put a tick, and in the field next to “Primary DNS” we enter the desired DNS from Yandex. In the line below, next to “Secondary DNS,” you can specify an additional, second address from Yandex, or you can leave this field empty. It’s important that other DNS are already indicated there, so it’s best to write them down somewhere in case you want to return everything back.

The router setup is complete! It's better to reboot your Wi-Fi router now. But in principle, everything should work like that, right away.

In order to stop using Yandex.DNS, you need to go to the settings on the router itself and uncheck the box next to “Use These DNS Servers” (the “Network” - “WAN” tab), and erase the registered addresses from Yandex. If before this, other DNS were indicated there and you wrote them down, then you need to enter them again in the required fields.

The main feature of this setup on a wireless point Wi-Fi access consists of the fact that blocking of unwanted sites will occur on all computers and other devices connected to the point.

Checking the operation of Yandex.DNS

You can check this quite simply. Try to visit some bad site, or if you have chosen a DNS that blocks sites with adult content, go to a site with an adult theme. If everything works, you will see a message like this instead of the site.
