The best air cooler. Cold for change: review of budget CPU coolers

Have you ever wondered what the performance and speed of modern processors is? This is actually very important. Every modern processor must be cooled. This need arises due to the fact that it constantly heats up, due to the huge number of information flows that it has to process. Certainly the most important role The cooler plays during the cooling process of the processor. This device constantly supplies cool air to the core of the processor, allowing it to work for many years. However, not every processor cooling system is capable of coping with such a complex task. On the market computer equipment In 2018, a huge number of models are presented, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages. It’s easy to get confused in such diversity. We will talk about how to choose a cooler for an AMD and Intel processor in this article.

A socket is a connector in motherboard, into which the central processor is inserted. Sockets have different distance mounts for coolers, so the first thing you should pay attention to when choosing a good cooling system is the socket. The design features of modern sockets are such that they differ for each specific processor. The method of mounting the device will be different, and it is necessary to decide on the model in advance before visiting the store. Modern manufacturers processors - AMD and Intel companies produce completely different architectures for these sockets, each of which is suitable only for one type of processor. The main thing is to know what kind of hardware your computer has, then everything will fall into place.

CPU Cooler Size

After the socket is determined, you need to choose one of the hundreds of models of cool processor cooling systems that the modern market offers. Cost is not always the most important factor here. The main thing is that the fan fits easily inside system unit. Some home computers have undergone repeated upgrades over many years of operation, and this leads to the fact that when installing a cooling system, problems may arise. certain problems. There may simply not be enough space for the cooler. That is why its geometric parameters must be treated extremely carefully. The size of the fan blades directly determines the amount of air that will be supplied to cool the processor. The stronger this flow, the better for the computer. The best cooler has geometric parameters of 92 by 92 by 25 mm. This standard is primarily used by people in private home settings. For a processor that is not the fastest, this is quite enough. If a person purchases a fan for a computer that he uses for games and complex tasks, then this size may not be enough. Here it is worth paying attention to models with a geometry of 120 by 120 by 25 mm. This is a more powerful device that creates more intense airflow. By the way, it has been noted that larger fans for cooling the processor are less noisy.

Cooler rotation speed

A reliable cooler should provide high enough rotation speeds to ensure maximum cooling efficiency. This parameter is measured in revolutions per minute. The most “advanced” models are considered intelligent, that is, they independently change the rotation speed depending on the load on the system. For example, a person just surfs the Internet, while the processor runs on a minimum of resources. In this situation, the rotation speed will be approximately 1100 rpm. If he suddenly decided to play some modern “shooter” game, then the fan begins to navigate according to the state of the processor, that is, it picks up speed, which can rise up to 2000 rpm. For those who have purchased a large size fan, there is no need to worry about overheating at all, it will easily maintain optimal temperature processor.

Types of CPU Cooling Systems

There are several types of processor cooling systems.

Box cooling systems

A cooler that comes with a processor in one box for one price is called boxed, from the word BOX (box). They are not the most powerful and are quite noisy. But for a low-power household computer, it is better to buy this system, which is very convenient. It's easier and cheaper than buying these devices separately.

Cooling systems without heat pipes

The simplest and cheapest processor cooling systems consist of a cooler and a radiator, which is a block of copper or aluminum plates - heat reflectors. They are easy to install and easy to use. Such cooling is quite enough for a low-power computer; in addition, this system has a low price. Its significant feature is the fairly high noise from the fan, which increases with increasing load on the computer.

Multi-cooler cooling system

Many processor cooling systems are equipped with two or even three coolers. Of course, the more fans there are, the more powerful the air flow and, accordingly, the stronger the cooling of the processor. But such units are massive and weigh quite a lot. It is clear that it is not advisable to install this expensive type of cooling system in an ordinary low-power computer.

Liquid Cooled Systems

Systems with liquid processor cooling have copper and aluminum heat pipes through which a liquid circulates, intensively removing heat. These systems are extremely effective and differ quiet operation. But the price of such systems is quite high. In addition, they have specific fastenings, which make the coolers difficult to install; The devices are quite bulky and take up a lot of space. And it’s not a fact that a liquid-cooled system will have a high-quality fan.

Radiator designs for processor cooling systems

In order to choose the right cooler for an Intel and AMD processor, it is important to take into account the design of its radiator, which determines the direction of outgoing air flow inside the system unit.

Coolers with tower radiators

Tower cooling systems do an excellent job of cooling the fastest processors. They dissipate heat well, thereby ensuring long-term operation of the computer. The only disadvantage of this type of radiator is the narrow direction of the outgoing air flow, which does not reach other parts of the motherboard. Outgoing air from tower systems flows either upward or to the rear of the system unit.

C-type coolers

C-type cooling systems, with their curved tubes over the processor with a radiator with a cooler attached to them, resemble the letter C. In addition to high-quality cooling of the processor, these systems provide much better airflow to the motherboard.

Combined

Combined processor cooling systems are quite rare. They are equipped with powerful, expensive system units. This aims to combine the two above-mentioned types of cooling. But devices of this type are not much more effective, but they are expensive. And whether they are needed is a personal question for everyone.

Top CPU coolers of 2018

The main characteristics of good coolers were listed above, but in addition to them you need to pay attention to the specific company that produced this device, and released it into the world. The most popular and high-quality products on the computer market in 2018 are considered to be the products of the companies Thermaltake and Cooler Master. It is these two companies that are most widely known today. This does not mean that there are no other manufacturers of similar devices on the market. Of course, they are present, and even produce products that are distinguished by high quality indicators. Only Thermaltake and Cooler Master cover their devices additional protection which prevents dust from falling out. After all, dust is also destructive for any microprocessor technology. In addition, it is worth paying attention to the products of companies - DeepCool, Zalman and Thermalright, and in order not to get lost in this huge number of models, we have compiled a rating of the most best coolers for all types of processors and sockets, which took the entire Top of the coolest magazines and won the respect of gamers, so here they are.

Best CPU coolers for AMD

The “heart of the system,” as the central processor is often called, needs cooling. The fact is that it consists of huge number transistors, each of which needs power. Energy, as we know, does not disappear anywhere, but passes from electrical to thermal. Of course, this energy must be removed from the processor. In stores you can find cooling devices of various types, sizes and shapes. Today's article will help you choose a CPU cooler.

The word “Cooler” comes from the English cooler - cooler. Applicable to computer equipment, we mean an air cooling system, which most often consists of a radiator and a fan, and is used to cool computer components whose heat output is greater than 5W.
Initially, processors made do with their own surface to dissipate the required amount of heat, then simple aluminum radiators. With the increase in power, and therefore heat dissipation, this became not enough. Fans began to be installed on radiators. Naturally, manufacturers sought to improve design and materials, which ultimately led to a variety of cooling system options.

Types of processor cooling systems based on heat removal method.

1) Air cooling systems, which are also called “coolers”.
Today’s article is dedicated to them.

2) Liquid cooling systems .
Heat is removed using liquid. There is a water block on the processor that removes heat. The pump, which is included in the circuit, pumps this liquid through tubes to a remote radiator. There the heat is removed and the liquid returns to the water block. This cycle is continuous. There are unattended systems and serviced ones. In the first case, the liquid is collected and filled at the factory. The latter are purchased as a set and assembled for a specific system.

Advantages compared to most air systems:

Less noise
+Higher efficiency
+ Installation flexibility
+Interesting appearance.

Cons:

Higher price
-Risk of leaks
-Difficulty of installation
-Blowing around the socket space is required.

3) Extreme cooling systems.
These are systems based on the principle of phase change, open evaporation systems, as well as so-called “chillers”. This kind of system is used only by enthusiasts to achieve results in overclocking computer components.

Is it always necessary to select a cooler? BOX and OEM processors.

When choosing components for assembling a system unit, first decide on the processor. The question immediately arises: “Why can a processor of the same model be bought at different prices in the same store?” The fact is that there is an OEM version, and there is a BOX version, usually this is indicated in the name. The first means that the processor arrived at the point of sale on a pallet and is used to assemble a PC. BOX - the version provides that the processor is in a box with a cooling device, instructions, and, usually, an increased warranty. It should be noted that the most powerful processors, even in BOX versions, are not always equipped with cooling systems. In this case, the box size is smaller, and the absence of a cooler is indicated on the box and in the description.

It makes sense that OEM processors require a cooler. However, it is often purchased for the BOX version. The supplied cooler will naturally cope with cooling, but only under ideal conditions. If the case is poorly ventilated, in the event of heat, or overclocking the processor, at best the fan will make a lot of noise, and the temperatures will be extreme. At worst, the processor will overheat and slow down, skipping cycles. In the case of an office system unit, you can use a complete, boxed cooler, but a combination of an OEM version and a cooler third party manufacturer will cost less.

Selection of a cooler depending on the socket.

Once the processor is selected, you need to look at which socket it is intended for. This is the first point in choosing a cooler. A socket is a slot on the motherboard into which the processor is installed. Processor manufacturers change sockets quite often. Replacement of standards for fastening processor cooling systems occurs less frequently.
Typically, simple coolers with low cost are suitable for only one processor socket. Powerful systems Manufacturers make cooling systems universal, this allows their products to be used for various platforms, even those that are no longer in production.
To choose the cooler that suits us, we simply select the socket we need in the configurator, for example, AM3+, and so on.

Selection of cooler depending on power dissipation.

TDP - Thermal Design Power is the power that the processor cooling system must be designed to handle. Measured in Watts. Nobody hides this parameter; it can also be viewed in the processor characteristics. The power dissipated by the cooler must be greater than or equal to the TDP of the processor. Of course, in case of equal power, the cooling system will be enough, but here everything is the same as in the case of a complete BOX cooler - it is better to take it with a reserve. Even if there is no overheating, a cooler with a higher power dissipation will be quieter and will not have to be replaced in case of an upgrade. If you plan to overclock the processor, you need to take into account that heat generation increases in proportion to the voltage increase. As a result, TDP increases, sometimes even significantly.

Conventionally, several groups can be distinguished CPU coolers depending on power dissipation:

Up to 45W – for office PCs
45-65W – for multimedia PCs
65-80W – for mid-range gaming PCs
80-120W – for high-end gaming PCs
More than 120W – powerful gaming or professional PCs, also overclocked processors.

Selection of a cooler depending on the design.

Structurally, all processor coolers can be divided into two groups: conventional design and tower design. The first implies a fan parallel to the motherboard, and the radiator fins perpendicular. In the case of a tower structure, the opposite is true. There are high-performance coolers of the usual type, but most often they are similar to those that come with BOX processors.
Achieving high heat dissipation power is much easier with tower coolers. Due to the heat pipes, the radiator can be located further from the motherboard, it is possible to install several fans, and also make a radiator of any size. Warm air tower cooler blows towards the back wall, not the motherboard. It will not interfere with the socket space and strips RAM.
In conventional coolers, the location of the fan ensures better airflow around the socket. Another plus is the dimensions - the height of the coolers of this type less than tower ones.

The height should be taken into account in coolers of any design - it should be less than what is indicated in the parameters of the computer case. Otherwise, the wall will not be able to close.

Heat pipes, due to the liquid boiling in them, transfer heat from one place to another almost instantly. In the case of computer coolers - from the base of the cooler to the radiator. The more tubes, the more efficient the cooling device will be. Also, the diameter of the heat pipes also affects the performance of the cooler - the thicker they are, the faster the pipes can remove heat.

Choice of materials for the radiator and cooler base.

Copper and aluminum are two materials that all cooler manufacturers use. Copper has a higher thermal conductivity, but is much heavier and more expensive than aluminum. A simple cooler without heat pipes is usually made entirely of aluminum. There are models with copper inserts at the base. There are also all-copper models, but if there are no heat pipes, they will not be able to cool powerful processors well.
Tower type coolers are combined - the base is made of copper and the radiator is aluminum. All-copper towers are quite rare coolers, as the cost and weight increase, and the increase in performance is insignificant. It is not always possible to determine the material by color - sometimes the base and heat pipes are coated with nickel to prevent oxidation.

Parameters of complete fans.

In order for the radiator to effectively remove heat, it must be ventilated. This is done by fans. Sometimes manufacturers use their own standard size, sometimes standard fans with a square frame of 80, 92, 120, 140mm. If a standard fan fails, it can easily be purchased separately. How larger size fan - the quieter it is, since at the same speed it pumps more air.
Most often, coolers are equipped with one fan; fanless (passive) models are rare. Powerful devices can be equipped with two or even three fans, which provides better ventilation. However, manufacturers often leave the opportunity to retrofit coolers. The maximum number of installed fans is one, two or three.
The higher the fan speed, the better the radiator will be ventilated. This will reduce temperatures, but increase noise levels. This level is measured in decibels (dB), and depends on the rotation speed, type of fan bearing, shape and number of blades. Fans up to 25 dB can be considered quiet, which most often corresponds to rotation at a speed less than 1500 rpm.
However, the fan speed can be controlled. There are coolers where this is done manually. The kit includes a regulator, by rotating the knob or moving the slider, you can achieve an acceptable noise level. However, in this case, you will have to independently monitor the processor temperature and increase the speed at moments of maximum load. Sometimes the kit contains not a variable regulator, but a constant resistor. That is, by connecting the fan directly to the motherboard, we get one speed, and through a resistor - a lower, but also fixed speed.
If the motherboard supports PWM, it is better to purchase a cooler with

The requirements for modern processor coolers have long been established. Firstly, this is the efficiency of heat dissipation, secondly, this is, of course, the minimum noise emitted by the fans, and thirdly, this is the price. Choosing the most efficient or most “powerful” cooler is not a problem; it’s much more difficult to choose the right one best option cooler, based on the price/performance ratio. Today we will review and compare several processor coolers from world-famous companies, such as: Thermalright, SilverStone, Zalman, Scythe, Thermaltake, Deepcool, Ice Hammer. And after that, we will try to identify “the best of the best.”

Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme

Silver Arrow S.B.- E does not need any special introduction, this is a well-known super-cooler from the company Thermalright, which can rightfully be considered a leader in its class. The version " Extreme» Designed for large processors with high heat dissipation, such as the Intel i7 socket 2011.

Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme has a two-section radiator of impressive dimensions, the weight of which is 800 grams. Eight heat pipes penetrate 51 plates in each section, the total area of which is about 11,500 cm2. The cooler comes with two 140 mm fans marked TR-TY143, the rotation speed of which is 600 - 2500 rpm. It is possible to install another additional fan on the cooler.

The cooler has a huge base made of nickel-plated copper, which is securely soldered to six millimeter heat pipes. The base of the cooler looks perfectly smooth, which confirms the “mirror effect” on its surface.

SilverStone Heligon HE01

Heligon HE01 another representative of the family of super-coolers from the company SilverStone, which has a two-section radiator, typical of all modern coolers of this class. The first thing that catches your eye is, of course, the different thickness of the radiator sections. Radiator design Heligon HE01 similar to the one used in most super coolers. Six heat pipes distribute thermal energy over two sections, each of which has 47 aluminum plates with a total area of about 10900 cm2. One more distinguishing feature The cooler is the presence of a massive 140 mm fan with an impressive thickness of 38 mm! This monster is capable of providing a maximum air flow of 171 CFM at a rotation speed of 2000 rpm, but the noise from the fan can hardly be called comfortable.

Six-millimeter heat pipes penetrate the small-sized base of the cooler, which has a very smooth surface. After processing the base, traces from the router remained, which are clearly visible and tactile. This, of course, can negatively affect the efficiency of heat removal.

Let's look at the main characteristics SilverStone Heligon HE01.

Zalman CNPS12X

Model CNPS12X this is another creation of engineers Zalman having its own original design, for which the company has been famous since the days of “bowl-shaped” copper coolers. But if you put everything aside and look at Zalman CNPS12X on the other hand, we have a typical two-section cooler, with a not very large radiator dispersion area, which is 9600 cm2. Engineers still love the bowl shape Zalman not for a minute, which is probably why the radiator sections have a “designer” shape. The only thing that can be noted is that the cooler has three fans measuring 120x120 mm, which, again, have their own “original” (non-removable) design. As a result, replacing a fan with a more efficient or quieter one causes big problems.

The base is made using the technology of direct contact of heat pipes with the heat distribution cover of the processor, designed to improve heat dissipation. In my opinion, the effectiveness of this technology is quite controversial. Although all six heat pipes are packed very tightly together, there are gaps between them that are very noticeable to the naked eye. There is no need to talk about a smooth surface or a mirror effect here, since the base was not sanded.

Zalman FX100 Cube

Zalman FX100 Cube is not similar to any of the previously reviewed coolers. This is not surprising, because the model FX100 Cube Positioned as a passive tower-type processor cooler. Its appearance resembles a sort of massive “black cube”, with an unusual and at the same time strict design. The cooler consists of six small radiators, which are connected to each other using ten heat pipes. The outer four sections are connected by a system of eight heat pipes, each section has 19 aluminum plates, the distance between which is 4 mm. Two more small radiators are located inside; they consist of 26 plates, the distance between which is half as much. The total dispersion area is 5000 cm2. To increase efficiency, the cooler is equipped with a seat for a fan measuring 92x92 mm, between the internal radiators. However, for some reason the fan is not included in the kit.

Base FX100 Cube the area is very small, thereby engineers Zalman hint to us that this model The cooler is more suitable for processors with low heat generation. The quality of surface treatment of the base does not raise any complaints. It has a very smooth surface and a mirror effect, which in turn should have a positive effect on the efficiency of heat removal.

Scythe Mugen 4

Cooler series Mugen from a Japanese company Scythe has been known to everyone for a long time and is not something new. Here is the updated model Mugen 4 which replaced its brother, it is still the same single-section cooler weighing 625 grams, which has undergone minor changes. Now, instead of four full-fledged sections as in the cases with Mugen 3, we see a single radiator with slight divisions throughout the entire area. Thanks to such a solution, the company's engineers Scythe managed to increase the dispersion area, which is 7300 cm2. The cooler is equipped with one 120 mm fan, the rotation speed of which is 400-1400 rpm. It is noteworthy that the design of the fan blades is similar to the well-known models from the German company Be Quiet.

As for the foundation, there have been no fundamental changes. All the same six heat pipes are laid and soldered to a copper base, which has a flat surface. The mirror effect is not fully present, but there is a slight “ripple”.

Thermaltake Frio OK

Updated Frio from the company Thermaltake at first glance it looks impressive due to its dimensions, and most importantly due to its plastic casing. Radiator cooler Thermaltake Frio OK divided into two parts, each of which is penetrated by five heat pipes with a diameter of 6 mm. Each radiator section consists of 45 plates, the total area of which is almost 6000 cm2. Most of the plastic casing is occupied by 140 mm fans, which have an unusual frame structure. There are two fans here, they are removable, but due to their design feature they can only be used with this cooler.

Cooler base Thermaltake Frio OK not particularly attractive. In addition to noticeable marks from the router on the surface of the base, during testing, an unevenness in the center was revealed. All this, of course, affected the results.

Deepcool Gamer Storm Lucifer

Another creation from the company Deepcool under the name Gamer Storm Lucifer has a very massive radiator of an interesting shape, which resembles the wings of a butterfly or a “fallen angel”. Radiator design Gamer Storm Lucifer somewhat similar to SilverStone HE02, it has 36 plates and six nickel-plated heat pipes with a diameter of 6 mm. The interfin distance of the radiator is 2.7 mm, which gives an advantage when using a cooler with low-speed fans. The dispersion area is 6800 cm2.

The cooler comes with a 140 mm fan with an interesting color scheme and labeling U.F.140 . This is a well-known fan from Deepcool measuring 140x140x25 mm and having an anti-vibration coating around the entire frame.

Cooler base surface Deepcool Gamer Storm Lucifer processed perfectly. There are no complaints about it; the mirror effect is present throughout the entire area.

Ice Hammer IH-THOR

IH-THOR this is another representative of the family of super-coolers from the company Ice Hammer. A large two-section radiator weighing almost 1 kg very much reminds us of the design COGAGE ARROW from Thermalright. All the same two sections with equal thickness, between which are located a pair of fans with a standard size of 140 mm. However, in the radiator IH-THOR 58 aluminum plates are located on six heat pipes, versus 55 plates and four tubes COGAGE ARROW. Increasing the number of radiator plates gave a dissipation area of 11,500 cm2. The design of the fans included in the kit is also copied from TR-TY143 from the same company Thermalright.

The exceptionally flat base is very well soldered at the points of contact with the heat pipes. The polished surface of the cooler base has a mirror effect.

Using the program LinX 0.6.4 AVX 100% processor load was carried out in 10 cycles, with a total duration of ~10 minutes. Temperature measurements for each core were carried out using the program RealTemp GT 3.70. The temperature values presented below are arithmetic averages for each mode. The coolers were tested in two modes with standard fans included in the package. First mode "quiet", fan rotation speed was 1000-1050 rpm, second mode "maximum", the name itself suggests that the fan rotation speed was the highest possible. Cooler Zalman FX100 Cube V passive mode(“quiet”) and with a 90 mm fan installed Arctic Cooling F9 at 1500 rpm (“maximum”). The ambient temperature during testing was 26 OWITH.

Test results

First, let's look at the processor temperature without load.

As you can see, almost all participants demonstrate similar results. Only one stands out, it's a passive cooler Zalman FX100 Cube which is not surprising. The difference in temperature between the other coolers is 3-4 degrees.

Now let's look at the processor temperatures at 100% load.

The leader this time, surprisingly, was Heligon HE01 from the company SilverStone, which coped very well with the hot temper of the i7-3930K. Second place belongs to the updated Silver Arrow S.B.- E Extreme from the world famous Thermalright, who lost only 1 degree to the leader. Well, third place went to Deepcool Gamer Storm Lucifer. Do not forget that the final result was taken as the temperature value in the “maximum” mode, in which the fan speed varies. Regarding Zalman FX100 Cube, then here he failed miserably! Although you shouldn’t blame him for this, fate FX100 Cube these are processors with a heat dissipation of no more than 80 W, such as i5 . The temperature during testing reached 99 OWITH, after which testing had to be stopped to avoid overheating of the processor.

Results

Well, today we tested and identified the best of the best among modern coolers. But that's not all, our editors have established three nominations among the participants in our testing today.

So, the nomination "Super cooler" rightfully awarded Silver Arrow S.B.- E Extreme from the company Thermalright. Despite the fact that he lost only 1 degree Heligon HE01, noise level emitted by fans from Thermalright was much smaller than the 38 mm monster SilverStone. Thus Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme once again confirms its title of “Super Cooler” .

In the nomination "Golden mean" deservedly won Deepcool Gamer Storm Lucifer, which showed decent results in both fan operating modes. At the same time Gamer Storm Lucifer costs significantly less than many other test participants.

Last nomination "Innovative Design" awarded to passive cooler Zalman FX100 Cube. Although he did not cope with the task, the company’s engineers still Zalman We managed to develop an excellent passive cooler that can cool mid-segment processors without any problems.

Also, all participants in our testing receive honorary titles “Participant in spring testing 2014”

The editors express great gratitude to the companies SilverStone,Zalman, Thermaltake, Deepcool, Ice Hammer, as well as an online store coolera. ru, for providing cooler models for testing.

Every year more and more new models of computer equipment and components appear. However, in pursuit of power and high performance, industry leaders high technology face natural problems. The processor, video card and other parts during operation generate energy, which is converted into heat and contributes to overheating of the system unit. This, in turn, entails frequent system malfunctions and breakdowns. The way out of the situation is to install a cooling system.

Types of CPU Cooling Systems

A high-quality system will not only avoid failure of seemingly completely new parts, but will also ensure speed, absence of delays and uninterrupted operation.

Currently, there are three types of processor cooling systems: liquid, passive and air. Below are the advantages and disadvantages of each solution.

Looking ahead somewhat, we can say that the most common type of cooling today is air, that is, the installation of coolers, while the most effective is liquid. Air cooling for the processor benefits largely due to its loyal pricing policy. That is why the article will pay special attention to the issue of choosing a suitable fan.

Liquid cooling system

The liquid system is the most productive method to avoid processor overheating and related breakdowns. The design of the system is in many ways similar to that of a refrigerator and consists of:

  • a heat exchanger that absorbs the thermal energy generated by the processor;
  • a pump that acts as a reservoir for liquid;
  • additional capacity for a heat exchanger that expands during operation;
  • coolant - an element that fills the entire system with a special liquid or distilled water;
  • heat sinks for elements that generate heat;
  • hoses through which water passes and several adapters.

The advantages of the water cooling method for the processor include high efficiency and low noise performance. Despite the productivity of the system, there are also plenty of disadvantages:

  1. Users note the high cost of liquid cooling, since installing such a system requires a powerful power supply.
  2. The design ends up being quite cumbersome due to the large reservoir and water block that provide high-quality cooling.
  3. There is a possibility of condensation forming, which negatively affects the operation of some components and can cause a short circuit in the system unit.

If we consider exclusively the liquid method, then the best cooling of the computer processor is the use of liquid nitrogen. The method, of course, is not at all budgetary and extremely difficult to install and further maintain, but the result really deserves it.

Passive cooling

Passive processor cooling is the most inefficient way to remove thermal energy. Dignity this method, however, they consider the noise capacity to be low: the system consists of a radiator, which, in fact, does not “reproduce sounds.”

Passive cooling has been around for a long time and was quite good for low-performance computers. At the moment passive cooling The processor is not widely used, but is used for other components - motherboards, RAM, cheap video cards.

Air cooling: system description

A prominent representative of the most common air type of heat removal is a processor cooling cooler, which consists of a radiator and a fan. The popularity of air cooling is associated primarily with a loyal pricing policy and wide choice fans by parameters.

The quality of air cooling directly depends on the diameter and bending of the blades. By increasing the fan, the number of required revolutions is reduced to effectively remove heat from the processor, which improves the performance of the cooler with less “effort”.

The speed of rotation of the blades is regulated using modern motherboards, connectors and software. The number of connectors capable of controlling the operation of the cooler depends on the model of a particular board.

The rotation speed of the fan blades can be adjusted using BIOS Setup. There is also a whole list of programs that monitor the temperature increase in the system unit and, in accordance with the data received, regulate the operating mode of the cooling system. Motherboard manufacturers often create such software. These include Asus PC Probe, MSI CoreCenter, Abit µGuru, Gigabyte EasyTune, Foxconn SuperStep. In addition, many modern video cards are capable of adjusting the fan speed.

About the advantages and disadvantages of air cooling

The air type of processor cooling has more advantages than disadvantages, and therefore is especially popular compared to other systems. The advantages of this type of processor cooling include:

  • a large number of types of coolers, and therefore the ability to choose the ideal option for the needs of each user;
  • low energy consumption during equipment operation;
  • Easy installation and maintenance of air cooling.

The disadvantage of air cooling is the increased noise level, which only increases during the operation of the components due to dust entering the fan.

Air cooling system parameters

When choosing a cooler for effective cooling of the processor, special attention should be paid to technical aspects, because not always pricing policy manufacturer corresponds to product quality. Thus, the processor cooling system has the following main technical parameters:

  1. Socket compatible (depending on motherboard: AMD or Intel based).
  2. Structural characteristics of the system (width and height of the structure).
  3. Type of radiator (types are standard, combined or C-type).
  4. Dimensional characteristics of fan blades.
  5. Noise reproduction capability (in other words, the level of noise produced by the system).
  6. Air flow quality and power.
  7. Weight characteristics (in lately experiments with the weight of the cooler are relevant, which affects the quality of the system in a rather negative way).
  8. Heat resistance or thermal dissipation, which is only relevant for top models. The indicator ranges from 40 to 220 W. The higher the value, the more efficient the cooling system is.
  9. The point of contact between the cooler and the processor (connection density is estimated).
  10. The method of contact of the tubes with the radiator (soldering, compression or the use of direct contact technology).

Most of these parameters ultimately affect the cost of the cooler. But the brand also leaves its mark, so first of all you should pay attention to the characteristics of the component part. Otherwise, you can purchase a famous model, which will turn out to be absolutely useless during subsequent use.

Socket: Compatibility Theory

The main point when choosing a fan is the architecture, i.e. compatibility of the cooling system with the processor socket. Under the incomprehensible English term, directly translated meaning “connector”, “socket”, lies a software interface that allows data exchange between various processes.

So, each processor has a certain space and types of mounting on the motherboard. This means, for example, that cooling an Intel processor will not work for AMD. At the same time, the ruler Intel models represented by both flagship and budget solutions. Cooling of the i7 processor needs to be more efficient than for previous versions Intel Core, which is suitable for other processors on Intel based(Pentium, Celeron, Xeon, etc.) required LGA socket 775.

AMD differs in that a standard fan is not suitable for components from this manufacturer. CPU cooling AMD is better purchase separately.

There are also visual differences in the sockets for AMD and Intel, which will somewhat help even an ignorant PC user understand the issue. The type of mount for AMD is a mounting frame to which brackets with hinges are attached. The Intel mount is a board into which four so-called legs are inserted. In cases where the weight of the fan exceeds standard figures, screw fastening is used.

Design characteristics

Not only socket compatibility is an important parameter. You should also pay attention to the width and height of the cooler, because you have to find a place for it in the system unit case so that the operation of the fan is not interfered with by other parts. If the cooler is installed incorrectly, the video card and RAM modules will interfere with the normal movement of air flows, which in this case, instead of cooling, will contribute to even greater overheating of the entire structure.

Type of radiator: standard, C-type or combined?

Currently, fan radiators are available in three types:

  1. Standard or tower view.
  2. C-type radiator.
  3. Combined view.

The standard type involves tubes parallel to the base passing through the plates. These fans are the most popular. They are slightly curved upward and are a more efficient solution for cooling the processor. Flaw standard type consists of what fits to the back or top side of the case along the motherboard. Thus, the air only passes through one circle of circulation, and the processor can overheat.

C-type coolers are free from this drawback. The C-shaped design of such radiators facilitates the passage of air flow near the processor socket. But there are some drawbacks: C-type cooling is less efficient than tower cooling.

The flagship solution is a combined type of radiator. This option combines all the advantages of its predecessors, and at the same time is almost completely free from the disadvantages of the c-type or standard type.

Blade dimensions

The width, length and curvature of the blades affect the volume of air that will be involved in the operation of the cooling system. Accordingly, the larger the blade size, the greater the volume of air flow will be, which will improve cooling of the laptop or computer processor. However, you should not go all out: cooling for the processor must correspond to other characteristics of the personal computer.

Noise level produced by the cooler

A parameter that cooling system manufacturers are trying to improve by almost any means is the noise level produced by the cooler. According to most users, CPU cooling should ideally be not only efficient, but also silent. But this is only in theory. In practice, it is not possible to completely get rid of noise during operation of the air system.

Small coolers make less noise, which is quite suitable for users of not particularly powerful computers. Large fans create enough sound to be considered a problem.

Currently, most coolers have the ability to respond to the amount of heat generated and, accordingly, work at a higher active mode if necessary. The processor cooling program does an excellent job of controlling the need for active cooling. So, the noise is no longer constant, but occurs only when the processor is working intensively. CPU cooling program - great solution for small models and undemanding computers.

When it comes to adjusting the noise level, you should pay attention to the type of bearing. The budget, and therefore the most popular option, is the sliding bearing, but the stingy pays twice: having already reached half of its expected service life, it will make an obsessive noise. A better solution is hydrodynamic bearings and rolling bearings. They will last much longer and will not stop coping with the assigned tasks “halfway”.

Point of contact between the cooler and the processor: material

A cooling system is necessary to remove excess thermal energy from the system unit to environment, but the point of contact between the parts should be as tight as possible. Here important criteria The choice of a high-quality cooling system will depend on the material from which the cooler is made and the degree of smoothness of its surface. Aluminum or copper have proven to be the highest quality materials (according to users and technical specialists). The surface of the material at the point of contact should be as smooth as possible - without dents, scratches or irregularities.

Method of contact of tubes with radiator

If there are visible marks at the junction of the tubes with the radiator in the cooling system, then most likely soldering was used for fixation. A device made using this method will be reliable and durable, although soldering has recently been used less and less. Users who managed to purchase a cooler with soldering at the point of contact of the tubes with the radiator note long term cooling system service and no breakdowns.

More popular way contact of the tubes with the radiator is a lower quality crimping. Fans manufactured using direct contact technology are also widely used. In this case, the base of the radiator is replaced by heat pipes. To determine a quality product, you should pay attention to the distance between the heat pipes: the smaller it is, the better the cooler will work, since the heat exchange will become more uniform.

Thermal paste: how often should it be changed?

Thermal paste is a paste-like consistency and can be of various shades (white, gray, black, blue, light blue). By itself, it does not provide a cooling effect, but it helps to quickly conduct heat from the chip to the radiator of the cooling system. Under normal conditions, an air cushion is formed between them, which has low thermal conductivity.

Thermal paste should be applied where the cooler directly touches the processor. The substance should be replaced from time to time, because drying out leads to an increase in the degree of processor overload. The optimal “service life” of most modern species thermal paste, according to user reviews, is one year. For older and reliable brands, the replacement frequency increases to four years.

Or maybe a standard solution is enough?

Indeed, is it worth purchasing a cooler separately and even thinking about the cooling system? The vast majority of processors are sold immediately with a fan. Why then go into detail and buy it separately?

Factory coolers are usually distinguished by low performance And high ability reproduction of noise. This is noted by both users and specialists. At the same time, a high-quality cooling system is a guarantee of long and uninterrupted operation processor, safety and security of the insides of the computer. The right choice will be the best cooling for the processor, which is not always a standard solution.

Computer technology is developing very, very quickly. Every now and then new versions of components appear, they begin to use innovative technologies and solutions. Modern manufacturers provide that the processor cooling system should also be improved.

Only a few companies now produce high-quality fan designs. Many brands try to distinguish themselves by compatibility with various types of connectors, low noise levels of their models, and design. Top manufacturers of air cooling systems are THERMALTAKE, COOLER MASTER and XILENCE. Models from these brands are distinguished by high-quality materials and a long service life.

Raise your hand if you want the CPU cooling system installed in the computer you use to be both efficient and quiet. How long have you looked at the “cooling systems” section of any computer online store? How many models are there on offer? There are dozens of only air ones, but there are also liquid ones. Here on the resource uk.hardware.info I came across material that will allow you to choose the best processor cooler with a great degree of objectivity - comparative testing and a list of models that have been tested, I bring to your attention.

Test participants

The participants in the test were tower cooling systems with heat pipes.

This is the most popular type of cooling system, known for many years, and during all this time it has been constantly improved. Moreover, this entire improvement process has led to the fact that outwardly all coolers are very similar to each other. The differences lie in the number of heat pipes used, the number and size of fans.

Main characteristics in the table. The price (if the model is sold in Russia or is not discontinued) is approximate, as of the beginning of February 2018.

However, there are differences. Thus, some models use a design in which a metal (aluminum or copper) base is in contact with the processor, through which heat is transferred to the tubes. Another approach involves direct contact of the heat pipes with the CPU cover.

The approach to installing fans and their number also differs. The most common option is one “Carlson” installed on the side and blowing air through the radiator fins. Often you can install a second fan on the opposite side “for exhaust”. Some models have such a pair initially.

There is another design, when the fan is installed in the middle, between the radiator blocks. It is possible to install another fan assembly, for example, “for blowing”.

The diameters of the fans used are 92, 120 or 140 mm. In the latter case, the total height of the cooling system is about 17 cm, which must be taken into account when purchasing. You need to check whether it is possible to install such a system in your case.

Testing methodology

To obtain the most accurate results reflecting the ability of a particular cooler to reduce temperature, a special test stand, simulating processor sockets 115x and 2011 with the ability to precisely control surface heating to simulate the operation of processors with different TDPs. IN this test The values used were 65 W, 95 W and 130 W, typical for CPUs for the specified sockets.

All measurements are taken in a closed box 55x55x28 cm, simulating a standard one computer case. There are 3 low-speed injection fans on the front wall, and one blow-out fan on the rear wall.

The air duct in front of the test body is equipped with heating elements with fans, which allows you to control the temperature of the air entering the test chamber. As such, the selected temperature is 35°C, which simulates the conditions, as during operation, and, accordingly, heating, of other computer components - video card, power supply, etc.

The coolers were evaluated from the point of view of the ratio of efficiency and noise, which, I think, is fair, since it meets the main desire of users - high-quality cooling, but not trying to pretend to be a helicopter taking off.

In the noise test, measurements were made in a soundproofing chamber from a distance of 10 cm. Tests were carried out at two values of the voltage supplying the fan(s): standard 12 V and reduced 7 V.

The efficiency was also tested in two modes, when setting the fan speed at which they create a noise of 30 dB (a comfortable level, almost inaudible in a regular case), and 40 dB (audible, but remaining within acceptable limits and not yet causing discomfort).

The coolers were also tested on socket 115x and 2011 simulators. In the first case, measurements were carried out simulating loads of 65 W and 95 W, and for 2011 a value of 130 W was used. It must be said that since the 2011 socket area is larger, and therefore the contact area with the cooler, this improves heat distribution and, in most cases, increases the efficiency of the tested models.

A number of coolers are not included in some tests, because this is due to objective reasons, for example, incompatibility with socket 2011, or it is initially impossible to “achieve” a noise level of 40 dB from the installed fan.

Testing

Noise

The first test included noise measurements, which were made when applying two voltage levels - 12 V, which forced the fans to work at maximum speed, and 7 V, which corresponds to minimum speed.

Maximum cooling capabilities

This test examined all the capabilities of cooling systems. The fan speed was set to maximum, simulating a load of 95 W on socket 1150 and 130 W on socket 2011.

Cooling at two noise levels

As mentioned above, tests were carried out at two levels of fan noise, 30 dB and 40 dB. This shows what you can expect from a cooling system when it operates in a comfortable environment for the user's ears.

Conclusion. The best processor cooler – which one?

I must say that none of the coolers failed the test. To be fair, let us clarify that in in this case provides for the “standard” use of cooling systems, i.e. with those maximum values thermal power that processors are capable of when operating without overclocking.

Overclocking is a separate topic, and the requirements for the cooler change somewhat, because for “civilian” use, the most interesting is the balance between performance and silence, and even with great interest in favor of the latter parameter. During overclocking, the amount of noise produced most likely moves into the desirable category, since the main goal is to squeeze everything out of the processor, to the last megahertz, and something has to be sacrificed.

As for the tested models, Noctua NH-U14S, NH-D15, Thermaltake Frio Extreme Silent 14, Scythe Mugen 5 PCGH seem to be very attractive purchases. Scythe Mugen Max (more expensive) or Gelid Tranquillo Rev.4 (half the price) and a number of others may also be interesting options. We think that the results when tested on socket 1150 at 30 dB of noise and a load of 95 W allow us to understand who gets the job done most effectively.

The results, for example, of Cooler Master MasterAir Maker 8 look somewhat disappointing. And the point is not that it works poorly, no, it cools well, but given its size, weight and, especially, price, it must do it better to become attractive for purchase.

This testing is additional information for consideration, which can be useful when choosing a cooler for the processor, will help you find the option that will please your ears with silence and ensure comfortable operation for the processor.
