Bluetooth is a system for wireless data transmission between computers and other electronic devices, cell phones, tablets. Using it, you can connect peripheral devices and office equipment to the equipment - printers, scanners, and so on.

Why doesn't Bluetooth work on my laptop? As you know, everything that works can break sooner or later. Before starting repairs, you need to assess the situation and try to find out the cause of the problem. There may be options here, depending on the connection method.

  • The device does not work on a newly purchased computer.
  • Bluetooth was working great before and suddenly stopped turning on for no reason.
  • The built-in, internal Bluetooth of the device does not work.
  • The external plug-in module does not work.

If the computer is new, just from the store, it is likely that the module is not included in the package. In other words, there are conditions for connecting the device; there are buttons and indicators from the Bluetooth system on the outside, but there is nothing inside. The laptop was sold in a minimal configuration. And the user can install additional devices at will.

All this had to be clarified in the store. If you need Bluetooth, but your laptop doesn’t have it, you can take the device to a service center, where they will install the module and connect you to a wireless connection literally within an hour. Or, if internal connection is not provided, purchase an external unit.

Bluetooth does not work on laptop after installing a new operating system

In recent years, users have become advanced and equipment is often purchased without a pre-installed operating system. If you have a Windows distribution disk at home, why pay another few thousand rubles for a machine with RAM installed? Installing Windows does not present any problem - just press OK and Enter.

New laptops sold in communication stores and tech markets today almost always come with Windows 8, which not everyone likes. Therefore, users buy a computer without Windows and then usually install Seven.

If the operating system is being installed again, Bluetooth may not turn on because the drivers on the Windows installation disk are not suitable for your Bluetooth device. In this case, you need to go to the manufacturer’s website and find out which drivers are necessary for the correct operation of the equipment on exactly the operating system on your laptop. There may be options regarding computers of different models and manufacturers.

After that, find the necessary drivers on the Internet and install them using the Add New Hardware Wizard.

If the external Bluetooth unit does not work

The external module is in a more vulnerable position and therefore physical damage to the equipment is likely.

If you move the computer carelessly, the USB cable is damaged or the connector is deformed. When subjected to force, thin soldered connectors can even be torn out by the roots.

You can check the serviceability of the external module by connecting it to another computer. If you installed a new OS Windows, there may be problems with the drivers.

Problems with the laptop operating system

If there have been any general problems with work lately, the power went out, the computer was slow and glitchy, there is a high probability of system failures and settings changes. This could also happen due to a virus infection of the computer.

Most often, the usual system recovery procedure helps in this situation. This is provided that the laptop had a pre-installed Bluetooth module and worked with native Windows drivers.

Sometimes it is useful to reinstall Windows and refresh the system. Then not only Bluetooth will work, but many other functions will be restored. And the computer itself, after updating Windows, begins to work much faster and more stable.

Bluetooth module is not detected by the system

For some internal reason, the computer stopped recognizing the module. You can check this issue in Control Panel. Find the Bluetooth device connection interface and see if it is connected. If not, that's the problem.

To restore the device, you need to reinstall the Bluetooth module and configure it. You may have to create a new connection point and specify a PIN code for authorization. Check all this with the instruction manual of the laptop and the Bluetooth unit itself. For different models there may be options for connection and configuration.

It may be necessary to reinstall the drivers. To do this, you can try updating the drivers in the hardware manager. Or vice versa - the update conflicts with the installed programs and then you need to send a rollback to the old installation. If these procedures do not help, you need to visit the equipment manufacturer’s website again and download the latest drivers.

Problems with laptop internal units

The cause of Bluetooth inoperability may be a malfunction of the motherboard. For example, the south bridge burned down. The contacts in the power circuits or data transmission loops could be broken. If no current is supplied to the unit, the indicator will not light.

Finally, the simplest problem is that Bluetooth had to be turned on for it to work. Look in the technical description of the laptop to see which key turns on Bluetooth.

Bluetooth technology operates at a frequency of 2.4 GHz. Broadcasting on this frequency does not require special licensing, which is why it has become so widespread. Devices using Bluetooth technology have an adapter that receives and emits the signal.

If you enable the BT module on your device, but don't find anything in the search, there are 4 possible reasons for this.

1. Device mapping disabled

It is possible that Bluetooth is simply disabled on the desired device or the visibility mode is not set correctly. How to activate visibility mode on Android, read. If you need to enable visibility on a computer or laptop, then:

  • Find the Bluetooth icon on your desktop and right-click on it;
  • The BT settings window will appear, in which you need to check the “Detection” box;
  • apply and save the new settings.

Have you adjusted your visibility, but the search results haven't changed? Let's move on to the second reason.

2. Radio module drivers are not working correctly

This reason is more likely for desktop computers. If you have outdated software installed, you should update it. If after the update the device works as expected, the radio module will appear in the device manager. If the update did not help, the wireless drivers probably need to be reinstalled. Reinstall only if you are sure that the following reasons have been excluded.

3.Device out of range

More modern versions of Bluetooth (starting from the fourth), such as the Partner Silver Bluetooth headset, operate within a radius of 100 meters, but some devices are able to detect themselves at a distance of 10-50 meters. Add to this the possible interference caused by household appliances, and you have a possible cause of the problem.

4. There is a strong source of interference nearby

Microwaves, cordless phones, power lines, baby monitors, and some types of monitors can cause interference. However, if Bluetooth worked fine before, the problem is most likely due to the second reason.

In this article I will try to explain in detail what to do in a situation when you have a desktop computer and need to connect some device to it via Bluetooth. For example: wireless headphones, mouse, keyboard, speaker system, joystick, phone, tablet, etc. There are a lot of such devices, and it’s impossible to have Bluetooth on a computer now. In addition, this connection allows us to get rid of a large number of wires.

As you probably already know, in ordinary desktop computers (in system units) There is usually no built-in Bluetooth. Except for two cases: an internal PCI receiver (external USB) is installed, or you have a cool motherboard with a built-in wireless module. But there are very few of them, so it’s unlikely. You can look at the specifications of your motherboard. Well, if your PC had Bluetooth, you would most likely already know about it. There would be a corresponding tray icon, or an adapter in the device manager (possibly as an unknown device - when the driver is not installed).

To connect devices to your computer via Bluetooth, you need to buy and install a Bluetooth adapter into your computer. Typically, these are adapters that plug into a USB port. I have one, model Grand-X BT40G. It looks like this:

There are also PCI adapters; they are installed inside the system unit case. But they are not very popular. I will not dwell on the choice of adapter, as I wrote about this in a separate article. There are a lot of them on the market. There are both cheap and expensive models. You can generally order from China for three kopecks. But if you plan to frequently use a wireless connection or connect some serious devices via Bluetooth, such as headphones, joysticks, then it is better not to skimp on the adapter.

If you already have an adapter, we’ll configure it now. If not, read the article at the link above, choose, buy and return to this page.

I will divide this article into two parts: first, I will show you how to connect a Bluetooth adapter to a computer on Windows 10, configure it, if necessary, find and install the driver, and connect some device. And in the second part we will do all this on a PC with installed Windows 7.

I don't currently have the opportunity to demonstrate all this on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, but from an older and a newer version of this operating system (I'll enter seven and ten) there aren't many differences.

Anyway, First we connect the Bluetooth adapter to the computer.

After that, we move on to installing drivers and setting up.

Bluetooth on PC with Windows 10: connection, drivers, setup

Windows 10 is generally a cool system in this regard. Why? Yes, because in almost all cases, no matter what kind of adapter you have, after connecting, all drivers will be installed automatically, and a blue Bluetooth icon will appear in the tray. And you can immediately connect the necessary devices.

In the device manager, I immediately saw the “Bluetooth” section and the adapter itself. If the adapter is not recognized and appears as an unknown device (other device), then you will have to install the drivers manually. You can see how to do this using Windows 7 as an example at the end of this article.

And to connect headphones, gamepad, mouse, keyboard, or other Bluetooth device to your computer, go to “Settings” in the “Devices” section. Or by clicking on the tray icon and selecting "Add Bluetooth device".

Click on "Add Bluetooth or other device".

Next, select "Bluetooth". The computer will begin searching for available devices to connect to. Our device must be in search mode. In my case, these are headphones. There is a separate button there. When they are in connection mode, the indicator blinks on them. When the computer detects our device, we simply select it and connect.

And if you want to connect a smartphone or tablet to your computer, then on the mobile device itself you will need to confirm the connection (pairing).

This way you can connect absolutely any Bluetooth device.

Setting up a Bluetooth adapter in Windows 7 and connecting devices to a computer

In Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8, after connecting the adapter, the driver will most likely have to be installed automatically. But not always. In my case, Windows 7 itself installed the driver on my Grand-X BT40G USB Bluetooth adapter. The Bluetooth icon immediately appeared.

Here is a screenshot from Device Manager.

If the system could not recognize the device and install it, the icon did not appear, then you need to install the driver. I will show you how to do this below. Now let's connect some device via Bluetooth to a computer with Windows 7 installed.

Click on the icon and select "Add device".

A window will open that will display all devices found by the computer. Which are currently located near the computer and are available for connection. Select our device and the connection process will begin. I connected the Bluetooth headset again (headphones with microphone). On which you can talk on Skype.

When the message "This device has been added to your computer" appears, you can use it. Wireless mice (via Bluetooth), keyboards, phones and other devices are connected in the same way.

In the case of headphones, you may also need to set them as the default playback device. This can be done in the playback device settings (by right-clicking on the sound icon in the tray).

Driver for Bluetooth adapter: search and installation

It doesn’t even matter what system is installed on your computer, it can be either Windows XP or Windows 10. But if it could not automatically configure the connected Bluetooth adapter, then we will have to manually search and install the required driver. There are at least three ways:

When the system cannot install a driver for a device, it is located in the device manager in the “Other devices” section with a yellow icon. It’s hard to say how exactly your Bluetooth adapter will be displayed (called) there. If you haven’t had any unknown devices there before, then identifying it won’t be difficult (there will be only one).

I have something like a CSR 8510 A10 (looks like this is the chip on which the adapter is built). Right-click on this device and select "Properties". Next, go to the “Details” tab, put “Equipment ID” in the drop-down menu and copy the first line.

Opening the site DevID.info, paste the copied line into the search bar and delete everything unnecessary so that only the VID and PID values remain. You can see what value I had initially (screenshot above), and what I searched for (screenshot below).

First, let's download the first driver that appears in the search results. You need to click on the floppy disk icon. Please note the operating system for which this driver is suitable.

We go through the “I am not a robot” check, click on the link and save the archive with the driver.

If there is no installation file there, but just a set of folders and some files, then right-click on the unknown device in Device Manager, select "Update driver" - "Search for drivers on your computer" and specify the path to the folder with drivers. If the driver is not found and installed, try downloading another one.

I really hope that the article was useful to you, and that you still added Bluetooth to your computer and were able to connect the necessary devices. And I didn’t waste half a day in vain :)

Despite being less popular than Wi-Fi, Bluetooth technology is alive and well and continues to evolve. One day it may turn out that such a familiar channel for exchanging files between devices - via Bluetooth - will refuse to work.

Why did the Bluetooth module stop working?

The reasons for the Bluetooth module not working may be:

  • physical shutdown of the module (disconnected, power is not supplied for other reasons);
  • driver failure (damaged driver files, incorrect installation);
  • the device in Windows is recognized as hidden;
  • hardware failure (error in data exchange between a PC, laptop or tablet with other gadgets);
  • other reasons, for example, virus activity and other “orphan” states of the Windows system that disrupt its operation.

Bluetooth module unavailability

The reasons why the Bluetooth module suddenly appeared “offline” are as follows.

Checking device status in Windows 7/8/8.1/10/10.1

Windows Device Manager is a built-in OS application that monitors the correct operation of devices.

  1. Give the “Start” command - right-click on the “Computer” element (for Windows 10/10.1 - “This PC”) and open “Properties”.

    Go to Device Manager Windows 7

  2. Select "Device Manager", find your non-working Bluetooth device. If it is disabled (down arrow icon), give the command: right-click on the device - “Enable”. If it is enabled, but does not work correctly (does not receive or send data between the PC and another device), give the “Disable” command, and then the “Enable” command.

    In this example, it is not the Bluetooth module that is used, but an SD card reader

  3. If the device you need is not there, connect the Bluetooth module (or its cord) to another USB port. If you are using a tablet, change the OTG adapter or USB hub (if, for example, a keyboard and mouse are connected to the Bluetooth module at the same time). Repeat the previous steps as soon as the device appears in the list (usually it should turn on and work immediately, and not show up as unused).

You can also get to the Windows 10 Device Manager in five other ways: by searching for the word “Manager” in the Start menu; by the command “Start - Run” with launch using the phrase “devmgmt.msc”; by the command “Start - Control Panel - System - Device Manager”; by the command “This computer - Computer management - Device Manager”; right-click on “Start” and select the “Device Manager” menu item. As you can see, Windows 10/10.1 provides a much more impressive list of ways to open the Manage Connected Devices Wizard. Half of them have been known since Windows Me/2000.

Update Bluetooth Drivers

Return to the familiar “Windows Device Manager” and do the following.

  1. Give your device the command: right click - “Update drivers”. The Driver Update/Reinstall Wizard will open.

    Run the wizard for working with existing device drivers

  2. The most competent option is to find and reinstall the drivers manually. Insert a flash drive (or distribution CD/DVD with your programs, which also contains the driver version for your Bluetooth module) with the driver and select the manual method of searching for the driver.

    Choose to manually search for drivers on your PC

  3. Select the location of the folder with the files of the driver you are looking for.

    As an example - a custom folder on drive D:, not external media

  4. Confirm the driver reinstallation by clicking “OK” and “Next”. The system will reinstall the Bluetooth driver.

    As an example - the same SD card reader, not Bluetooth

After the installation is complete, the system can both find the driver and indicate that it does not need to be reinstalled.

The device works fine and does not need to be reinstalled

If reinstalling the Bluetooth module as a device in Windows did not give anything, follow the instructions below.

But before you move on, do something different: give the problematic device the “Remove” command (and confirm the request by checking the option to remove drivers). It will need to be reconnected, after which the “Update drivers” command is given, and all the steps from this instruction are repeated. After removing the drivers, you may need to restart Windows.

Video: how to reinstall Bluetooth drivers

What to do if your device is hidden

First, open the already familiar Windows Device Manager and give the command “View - Show hidden devices.”

Windows 7 will show hidden and unconnected devices

If the Bluetooth module driver has not been installed (the device is not registered in Windows), the module itself will not appear in the list of hidden ones. The category of hidden devices assumes the presence of devices that were already installed and previously worked correctly.

If the Bluetooth module has been installed, follow the instructions above for (re)installing the Bluetooth module.

Enabling an unused Bluetooth device from the BIOS

BIOS control is useful when you have built-in Bluetooth adapters - typically in laptops and tablets.

Depending on the BIOS/UEFI version, the commands for Bluetooth are different

All commands have been translated into Russian and popularized.

Enabling the built-in Bluetooth adapter from the BIOS is key - without it you won't be able to do anything with Bluetooth. Therefore, it would be better to start by enabling wireless modules through the BIOS. Now you can perform any actions from the previous instructions.

Bluetooth adapters built into the motherboard are not installed in PC system units - the body of the system unit shields the Bluetooth signal from all sides, and the range of the module without an external antenna is greatly reduced. Therefore, for desktop computers, a USB module is the best solution. The same applies to the Wi-Fi adapter, 3G/4G modem, wireless keyboard, mouse, headphones, microphone and similar peripherals.

Hardware failures of Bluetooth modules

In addition to power problems, Bluetooth may fail in the following ways:

Bluetooth module overheating

The speed values for different versions of the Bluetooth radio interface are as follows.

  1. Bluetooth version 2.x uses data transfer rates of up to 1 Mbit/s. Thus, the Dial-Up Networking service, used with smartphones from Nokia, Siemens and other brands popular in the 2000s. and supporting 3G Internet, allows you to get mobile Internet speeds of up to 384 kbit/s. These values fully fit the transmission of high-quality stereo sound to headphones (the MP3 format supports a speed of 128–320 kbps). Nowadays it has been replaced by Wi-Fi Direct technology, which allows you to distribute traffic (and files through a connection via a router) from one smartphone to several (point-to-multipoint mode) other gadgets and PCs at once at multi-megabit speeds.
  2. Starting with version 3.0, the speed of the Internet, communication via the local PAN network and file sharing via Bluetooth between devices has increased to 24 Mbit/s.
  3. Versions of Bluetooth 4.x, as already mentioned, use speeds of 75 and 100 Mbit/s, very close to the throughput of a conventional cable LAN connection (Ethernet-100 standard).

Sometimes Bluetooth modules that have a range of 100 meters or more (using a power of 100 mW) overheat even in conditions of a very weak signal. Barriers to reliable Bluetooth communication include:

  • shielded rooms and buildings;
  • the distance between devices is too large (at the limit stated in the data sheet of Bluetooth modules and gadgets);
  • neglect of directional antennas when establishing communications in the form of RRL line of sight, stretching for kilometers;
  • poor coordination of external antennas and cables used in Bluetooth modules equipped with a microwave socket for connecting them;
  • other factors.

Other causes of overheating of wireless devices (not just Bluetooth):

  1. Operation of wireless modules in the heat, launch of a Bluetooth module supercooled in multi-degree frost in northern conditions.
  2. Strong interference (dozens of Bluetooth modules are connected to one USB-Hub). Like any radio transmitters (as such), like any digital communication lines, these modules interfere with each other. It is recommended to place them as far away from each other as possible. This is the same as placing the external antenna of a router that distributes the Internet via Wi-Fi and a Yota 4G modem inserted into the same router close to each other - the Internet speed will noticeably decrease, especially if the SIM card has an unlimited tariff with a very high high speed, despite the fact that the 4G tower will be significantly unloaded at the moment.

Failures when exchanging traffic between devices

So, you “drive” the Bluetooth module and gadgets to the brink of their maximum throughput. Failures during file and content sharing often occur when sending multi-gigabyte files. Cheap Chinese smartphones and tablets, whose performance is not the best, often fail. Even if the Bluetooth module and/or the gadget itself are not overheated, stopping the transfer of content can take the user by surprise. Thus, sending a movie in (Ultra)HDTVRip format weighing tens of gigabytes from a laptop to a smartphone can get stuck, say, at some 74%.

The fact is that low-speed memory cards are very common - the writing speed on them is only 5–8 MB/s. Don't delude yourself by purchasing a 32 GB microSD card at a good price. If the Bluetooth module in the gadget has a high speed (100 Mbit/s) - and the speed of writing the received content to the SD card is noticeably lower (40–64 Mbit/s), then the transmitted data will not have time to be written to the flash memory. The gadget's RAM will overflow - first its overall performance will slow down, then the receiving gadget will glitch, other applications and processes will freeze, and eventually it will restart abnormally. In turn, the donor gadget or computer will report a failed file sending.

Developers of iOS, Android and Windows Phone/Mobile are struggling with this problem - any of these OS includes software control of high-speed streams in the form of a special system process or service. This allows you to automatically limit the data flow rate if the “receiving side” has problems with the speed of saving it to a file. This approach allows you to forget about annoying failures during content exchange, which were a nightmare for previous generations of wireless solutions.

Virus activity on PCs and gadgets

The essence of the problems that arise when there are viruses in Windows is that the virus clones some processes (system processes “explorer.exe”, “svchost.exe”, etc.), littering and overloading the performance of the PC/tablet.

Since each Windows process consumes so many megahertz of processor performance from each of its cores and so many megabytes of RAM, a sharp increase in the number of these processes will lead to the fact that all available peripherals, including data exchange via Bluetooth, will slow down significantly. work, because the lion's share of hardware resources is spent on what the user does not need.

Antivirus programs are not the only means of protection - it is worth adding to this list for completeness and maximum effectiveness:

So, for example, a list of useful programs that protect a PC or tablet from external intrusions could be like this:

  • AdBlock+ plugin for browsers;
  • cache proxy HandyCache (has its own web content filters);
  • Windows 8 Firewall Control program (monitors programs and components that consume traffic and allows you to permanently remove unnecessary ones);
  • free antivirus, such as Avast.

The tips below sum it all up.

  1. Place your modules and devices with Bluetooth in an area of reliable coverage in relation to each other.
  2. If you need to “upload” a long file, charge the gadget, or do not remove it from recharging until the file is transferred.
  3. Timely free up space on disks and memory cards from unnecessary files if the next file does not fit in the memory of the receiving PC or gadget.
  4. Do not use wireless data transmission in extreme weather, for example, if there is a risk of the gadget or laptop battery overcooling and turning it off.
  5. Do not disassemble the module during operation, do not disconnect cables (if any). First, end the data session between the devices.

Bluetooth shows no sign of losing ground. Version 5.0 will support content sharing speeds of up to hundreds of megabits. And restoring the operation of your suddenly failed Bluetooth device is actually not difficult.
