Every self-respecting manufacturer of gaming peripherals listens to the opinions of players. And recently, it even attracts eSports professionals to develop its products. One of the very successful mice was ROG Gladius, which was released more than two years ago. And recently ASUS introduced its updated version, which was named Gladius II. This is what we will study today, compare it with the previous model and tell you about all the innovations of the new product.
The cost of ASUS ROG Gladius II in Moscow retail at the time of writing the review is from 6,200 rubles.
The design of the box that Gladius II comes in has changed. Now the design is made in gray-orange colors, and not in black and red, as before. There is nothing else indicated on the front side except the name and photograph.
But on the back of the box everything is described in sufficient detail, although the mouse is no longer shown in cross-section.
The manufacturer notes:

On the other side of the box, you can see that the manufacturer notes the presence of a removable cable and RGB lighting, implemented along slightly more than half the perimeter of the base. 
Flipping the box allows you to look at the mouse and also read a brief description of it. 
This begs the question: what is the difference between the new product and its predecessor? Let's compare the key characteristics:

Under the thumb we have three buttons - two classic and already familiar “back and forth” (of course, customizable through software), and the third is called Instant DPI and it can also be customized. 
There are no buttons on the right. The same rubberized textured surface is implemented to prevent fingers from sliding down. 
Under the palm is the ROG brand logo, which is backlit. 
The mouse is designed in such a way that it will be comfortable to use regardless of your grip type: 
As we have already said, the mouse cable is removable. 
Between the main keys there is a wheel and a sensor speed switch. The upper part of the case is made of dark gray matte plastic, which does not slip in the hand. 
The mouse glides on four Teflon legs. Four rubber plugs cover the screws, access to which is required to replace the switches. 
To prevent the cable from becoming disconnected during fierce battles, it is secured with a special lock. You won't be able to unplug the cable with one hand. 
The mouse is very easy to disassemble. 
Switches for additional buttons (manufactured by Kailh) are soldered on a separate printed circuit board. 
The soldering of the elements is very neat, no problems were identified in this regard. 
Standard switches are Omron D2FC-F-K(50M) with an operating life of 50 million cycles. In addition to the second complete ones, they can be replaced with models D2F - D2F, D2F-F, D2F-01, D2F-01F, as well as D2FC - D2FC-3M, D2FC-F-7N, D2FC-F-7N(10M), D2FC-F-7N(20M). 
Using the ROG Armory software, you can customize many mouse features, including lighting.

The proprietary software has all the necessary functionality, but it is impossible to get confused in it.

It is commendable that the changes affected not only the appearance and ergonomics, but also the filling - now the heart of the mouse is the extremely good Pixart PMW 3360 sensor. Gladius II fits perfectly in the hand, does not slip, moves easily, and also has a large number of settings using proprietary software provision. Separately, it is worth noting the interesting implementation of the backlight, which covers most of the perimeter of the mouse base, which looks very attractive from the outside. In general, ASUS ROG Gladius II can be suitable for games of any type and for gamers of any skill level, so if you are looking for a replacement for your rodent for one reason or another, then it’s definitely worth taking a closer look at the new product we reviewed!
In 2017, Asus updated its flagship gaming mouse. Unlike the first generation ROG Gladius, the model received RGB lighting along the contour of the body. There are various glow effects in addition to constant operation: click activation, smooth color changes, various flickering scenarios. For each of the backlight zones (outline, wheel and logo), you can set your own option.
Gladius II has a plastic top and rubberized sides with a relief pattern. It fits comfortably in a medium-sized right hand and does not slip out during quick movements required in games. The only downside is that it gets dirty, because both the plastic and the cracks in the rubber “collect” dirt well.
Increased working life
The “heart” of the Asus ROG Gladius II is the PixArt 3360 optical sensor with a resolution of up to 12000 DPI. It is accurate and fast and cannot be disrupted, making it one of the best available on the market.
The model has 6 programmable buttons (excluding the scroll wheel). The two main ones on the “back” of the mouse are complemented by a key for switching the sensor sensitivity. And on the left side, to the traditional pair of additional buttons below, another one has been added - by default, it allows you to temporarily reduce the DPI. For example, in shooters, this will allow you to aim more accurately when shooting. True, you need to get used to its location.
In the proprietary ROG Armory utility, you can reassign the functionality of buttons, adjust the speed of the sensor, and set different usage scenarios for three profiles.
The main key switches are designed for a record 50 million clicks (Omron product, model D2FC-F-K). The user can easily replace them without losing the warranty. On the bottom, under special plugs, there are screws, unscrewing which you can remove the board and install other switches. The package already includes an additional pair with a resource of 1 million clicks.
Convenient to take with you
A nice feature of the mouse is the detachable cable. Moreover, the kit comes with two wires at once: a 2-meter long one in fabric braiding and a meter long one, rubberized (for connecting to a laptop). Both are light, flexible and soft. Also included in the basic package is a small carrying case, which will allow the gamer not to part with his gaming “assistant” outside the home.
Asus ROG Gladius II is a direct competitor to the Logitech G403 Prodigy, having a more interesting appearance (due to edge lighting) and the ability to quickly replace switches. And the need to pay extra for this seems quite reasonable.

The game controller comes in a small, medium-weight cardboard box. The design is quite stylish and contains several beautiful images of the manipulator itself, as well as a list of its main advantages.
Thanks to the opening door (fixed with Velcro), you can examine the ROG Gladius II mouse itself, which is protected by transparent plastic, evaluate its size and preliminary ease of placement in the palm of your hand.
The delivery set is quite rich and includes a transport case, two removable USB cables, two spare main key switches, user documentation and a metal sticker in the form of the ROG logo. It is worth noting that the first Gladius came with spare legs, which are not here.
ROG Gladius II has a very nice design, which to a certain extent resembles the Razer DeathAdder 2013, and yet by many it is considered almost the standard gaming mouse. Nevertheless, the new product received an original and memorable appearance. Including due to the signature pattern in the style of the Mayan Indians, which is the hallmark of the ROG series. The main key covers, which are separated from the main part of the top panel, also add differences.
The main visual changes compared to the original ROG Gladius were the appearance of an additional button on the left side, as well as the addition of an RGB backlight strip (16.8 million colors) at the base along almost the entire contour. It looks very beautiful and gives the impression that the mouse is floating in the air.
The manipulator is designed exclusively for right-handers, and its ergonomics can rightfully be called one of the best. It fits perfectly in the palm and is perfect for those with medium to large hands. The sides provide very good grip, while the mouse body has fairly good weight distribution. The main grip is a “claw”, but you can also use a “palm”.
The device is characterized by good build quality, which is confirmed by the absence of any gaps and extraneous sounds when trying to apply pressure. Everything is in the best traditions of high-level solutions.
The main material of ROG Gladius II is matte plastic of different textures: at the top - dark gray with a “sparkle”, at the bottom (plus a little sidewall) - black, rough. The sides are represented by large rubberized inserts with a signature pattern. It is also worth noting that the additional buttons are glossy, as is the separator between the two main ones, presented as independent panels.
Closer to the tail of the “rodent” there are recesses for fingers above the main keys. The latter have a very comfortable pressing force and a clear, ringing response, but they are loud. Between the main buttons there is a studded scroll wheel with a distinct movement. It stands out for its very quiet operation. Nearby there is a glossy button for quickly changing the sensor resolution.
The back is decorated with a glowing Republic of Gamers logo.
The side panels of the ROG Gladius II have indentations for a more comfortable finger position, and the rubberized surface with the already mentioned proprietary pattern adds grip. On the left side there are not only the usual “Back” and “Forward” buttons, but also a new one has appeared - instant DPI switching, which, when held, reduces the sensitivity of the optical sensor and returns the standard resolution when released. The additional keys, similar to the main ones, have a clear and loud response, but they are a bit stiff.
The function of quickly reducing sensitivity is useful when aiming in shooters, and increasing it is useful when you need to quickly move the cursor around the screen. It is worth noting that it is located directly under the thumb and when lifting the mouse, accidental clicks are possible, especially when the palm is sweaty and you have to make additional efforts to avoid the manipulator slipping. Therefore, you need to get used to it and move your finger a little back when lifting, and this is somewhat inconvenient in the heat of battle. If desired, this function can be disabled.
The front of the mouse resembles the radiator grill of a sports car due to a slight relief in the form of beveled stripes. In the center there is a micro-USB port for connecting a removable cable, of which there are two included.
One in nylon braid has a length of 2 m. It is characterized by medium rigidity and the presence of Velcro for adjusting the length. The second one is shorter - only 1 m. Apparently, it is intended for connecting to laptops. It is unbraided and slightly stiffer than the first one.
In both cases, the connectors on the cables are equipped with convenient guides and are inserted into the mouse until it clicks. And to remove them back, you will need to pull the locking slider on the base of the mouse.
On the bottom of ROG Gladius II there are four Teflon feet, which are much smaller compared to the previous model, but they do their job with a bang - the manipulator glides incredibly easily. Next to the right leg there is a slider for locking the cable in the USB socket. Like its predecessor, the new product can be easily disassembled to replace the main components. At the same time, you do not lose the manufacturer's warranty, which is an advantage over other mice on the market.
To get inside, you need to remove four rubber plugs and unscrew the screws hidden under them. A printed circuit board with a dense but very neat arrangement of elements opens to our eyes. To replace the main switches, no soldering is required, as special connectors are used.
By default, blue Omron D2FC-F-K(50M) switches with a working life of 50 million operations are installed. The package also includes Omron D2F-01F solutions with a resource of 1 million operations. If desired, you can select switches from the Omron D2F series (D2F, D2F-F, D2F-01, D2F-01F) or Omron D2FC (D2FC-3M, D2FC-F-7N, D2FC-F-7N(10M), D2FC-F -7N(20M)).
The side buttons use red Kailh switches, and the scroll wheel uses an Alps encoder.
The role of the optical sensor is performed by the Pixart PMW 3360 DM-T2QU infrared sensor, which is currently the best in its class. It can operate in the following modes: 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400 and 12000 DPI. For comparison: the previous model had an Avago ADNS-S3988 sensor with a maximum resolution of 6400 DPI. The new sensor performs remarkably well in all common scenarios, both on gaming surfaces and on varnished tabletops. It is possible to calibrate the sensor for the surface being used and adjust the lift-off height.
According to the Enotus Mouse Test, the maximum movement speed of the ROG Gladius II is a mind-blowing 9.27 m/s, which is enough for even the most dynamic games in 4K resolution. There are and cannot be any complaints about the positioning - everything is at the highest level. The EpicGear CompoXite mat was used for testing.
Finally, I would like to note that although the manufacturer intended the mouse to be aimed at dynamic shooters, it performs remarkably well in any other gaming genres, providing a high level of comfort and control.

The front door of the box is held on by a small round Velcro, which allows you to appreciate the appearance, shape and size of the ASUS ROG Strix Impact.
Inside we only found user documentation and a couple of stickers with the ROG logo.
Appearance, arrangement of elements and operating impressions
ASUS ROG Strix Impact is a slightly redesigned version. Before us is the same militant symmetrical body with chopped edges, but with some differences in design and color scheme - the plastic is darker and now there are no red lines on the sides, and a different scroll wheel texture is used. In addition, a DPI switch button with an active mode indicator appeared and RGB illumination was added, but the built-in memory, the ability to quickly disassemble and the modular design of the switches disappeared.
As before, the manipulator will be appreciated equally well by right-handers and left-handers. It is best suited for those with small and medium-sized palms, but for large ones it may be too small. The main grip can be considered a “claw”, but a “palm” can also be used. The weight distribution is pretty good. If we talk about the build quality, then there is complete order: no jambs or extraneous sounds were noticed during operation.
Quite tenacious and tactilely pleasant matte plastic is used as the main material. Additionally, there is a signature Mayan-style pattern at the back.
The top panel is divided into two parts. The back has a trapezoidal shape and curves to fit the inside of the palm, as well as an illuminated ROG logo.
In the front part there are the main keys (they have a very comfortable pressing force and a clear, ringing response, but are somewhat loud), a scroll wheel with the same pattern (weakly perceptible division of positions, but spins quite smoothly and quietly) and a button for quickly changing the sensor resolution ( a little quieter than the main ones and sounds muffled).
To connect the ASUS ROG Strix Impact, a regular rubberized cable 2 m long is used. It is quite elastic and is protected at the output by a stiffening rib.
The sides are notable only for the aforementioned signature pattern - there are no other interesting elements here.
On the bottom of the manipulator there are three large Teflon feet, which have an average level of sliding: there is an excessively high resistance and I would like to have an easier move.
The Pixart PMW 3310DH-AQWT optical sensor with invisible infrared illumination is also located here. It can operate in the following modes: 400, 800, 1600, 3200 and 5000 DPI. This is quite enough for most use cases. In operation, the sensor performed equally well both on gaming surfaces and on varnished tabletops. For comparison: the ROG Gladius II feels like a wildly sharp mouse, as if it wants to break out of your hand, but the ASUS ROG Strix Impact, on the contrary, is pliable and even somewhat slow, but at the same time the control of body movement is noticeably better. This is primarily due to the efficiency of the sliding legs of the latter.
According to the Enotus Mouse Test, the maximum speed of movement of the manipulator on the EpicGear CompoXite mat is 5 m/s - not a record figure, but very respectable in its class.
Software
For ROG Gladius II and ASUS ROG Strix Impact, specialized ASUS ROG Armor software is provided, which allows you to expand the functionality of the devices and customize them to the needs and tastes of a specific user.
