Processor polishing. Grinding the processor cover: why and how? Necessary for CPU modding

LG G6 received a non-removable 3,300 mAh battery. This is noticeably more than its predecessor.

Judging by the results, the level of autonomy is slightly above average. For a high-performance flagship, this is good.

In a real situation, the picture looks like this:

In practice, the level of autonomy is quite consistent with its competitors from the past and present. The non-separable case and dense layout, although it made the process of replacing the battery difficult, allowed the installation of a more capacious battery. The LG G6 is quite capable of staying connected throughout the day.

If you use the power saving mode and disable the Always On Display function, then no problems will arise.

Interface, features and settings

LG G6 has almost two camera interfaces. The first is the familiar interface with a lot of manual settings.

In addition to the manual mode for photos, manual settings for video shooting are now available.

The second interface allows you to take square pictures and view them on the fly in the bottom half of the screen. I suspect this might be a good fit for Instagram lovers.

Both programs work quickly and stably. There are no complaints about them.

Image quality

Attention: individual screenshots in an enlarged version are images of the original size, so they can be quite “heavy” (up to 2-3 MB on average). The size and resolution of both versions of the image, as always, are specified in the TITLE block of the IMG tag; browsers usually show them in a tooltip.

Let me remind you that the main complaint about the LG G5 cameras was the quality of the wide-angle module. It provided noticeably lower quality than the standard module. In the LG G6, the manufacturer seems to have fixed this. Let's see.

Please note that by default, pictures are taken with a 2:1 ratio in order to view them comfortably on the phone itself, but on other devices they will all have black bars at the bottom and top, so it makes sense to immediately set the more usual 16:9 or 4: 3 for retrogrades.

The detail on the standard module is quite high, the HDR mode worked in automatic mode. The colors are very nice, but the post-processing is too rough. Moreover, there are gaps in the shadows, which is a clear disadvantage for the HDR mode. The detail of a wide-angle shot is lower, but it cannot be the same with such compact optics.

If we compare 100% crop, the detail has really become higher compared to the LG G5 SE, especially for the wide-angle camera.

Thanks to the increased resolution, when resizing to the level of a G5 SE photo, the appearance of sloppy processing is reduced.

But the main complaint about the previous generation wide-angle camera is the quality in low light. The problem was poor quality optics, which blurred the light sources and turned the photo into a freeze frame from a cheap DVR. Now there are no such problems, the picture looks much better.

As I already mentioned, the wide-angle lens does not have autofocus, so it is not worth trying to take macro photos (from below).

But a regular lens copes with this task without problems.

Questions about LG G6 H870 64Gb secret codes

Ask a question about secret codes on LG G6 H870 64Gb

LG G6 is a successful attempt by the company to return to the flagship smartphone market, after not the most successful launches of modular phones. This phone offers high-quality case protection, a powerful camera, a capacious battery and an excellent display. But the LG G6 also has some major problems, which we will talk about in this article, and also tell you how to quickly deal with them. It is worth noting that not every user will necessarily encounter them, but if you are unlucky, read our article.

"Device is damaged" message

Quite a few users have encountered this problem where after a phone crash they see the following message on the screen: “Your device is damaged. The phone can no longer work properly." While this issue often occurs when users unlock the bootloader, this message also appears when you have not made any changes to your LG G6 phone.

Why does this happen and what to do

This issue is related to the Verified Boot process that Google introduced with Android 7.0 Nougat. Some applications and other features may interrupt the process incorrectly and cause this message to appear. This is a software oversight that we hope will be fixed soon.

A regular reboot or system reset helps. In some cases, the device restarts automatically and works normally. However, some users need to do a Soft/Hard reset to get the device working normally again. Keep in mind that a simple reboot may work after a few tries, so try several times before performing a factory reset.

Fingerprint scanner doesn't work

While most users call the fingerprint scanner on the LG G6 very fast and accurate, several owners of the smartphone have encountered problems as the scanner does not recognize the fingerprint most of the time or is very slow in unlocking the device.

Potential Solutions

You can simply try to delete and reassign the fingerprints stored on the device, or you can even save the same fingerprint twice, which has worked for some smartphone owners.

In other cases, clearing the cache will help. Go to Settings > General > Phone management > Device storage and tap Internal storage. Then click on "Cached Data" and clear it.

Some users also found that the issue with the scanner appearing to be due to the Always On Display feature being disabled, enabling it again fixed the issue. Try it, it should work.

Performance and battery issues

Some more LG G6 users are facing various performance issues such as lags, random reboots, and slow startup times of the phone. There have also been cases where users have seen the battery drain very quickly even when the phone is in standby mode.

How to fix it

Spyware and low-quality apps can cause slowdowns, lags, or battery drain. Boot your device into Safe Mode (you can find instructions on how to do this at the end of the article) and see if your problem is resolved. If not, then it's something else. You can either uninstall the last few apps that may have been installed before your device began to die or stutter, or perform a factory reset and start over, although this is only recommended as a last resort as you will lose all your data.

LG has many features in the firmware. Disabling these features only if you don't use them often can significantly improve performance.

If you bought your LG G6 from an unreliable seller, your device may also come with a lot of pre-installed apps. While you won't be able to uninstall these apps, you can disable them. Go to the "Applications" section in the "Settings" menu, find the application you need and disable it there.

Problems with automatic brightness adjustment

Many owners of this phone are unhappy with how the automatic brightness function in the LG G6 works: in some places the brightness adjustment is insufficient, and in others it is excessive.

Possible solutions

This is a software issue, we hope a fix for this bug will be available in an upcoming LG G6 software update. You can also use third-party programs or launchers from Google Play for now, which will allow you to more accurately adjust the brightness. Take a look at our selection.

"OK Google" voice command doesn't work

Some users have found that the "OK Google" voice command to launch Google Assistant on their LG G6 smartphone sometimes doesn't work. The microphone simply does not recognize or hear your voice when you try to set up your voice recognition. There is still a problem, fortunately it can be quickly fixed.

How to set up Google Assistant on LG G6

Clear Google app data by going to Settings > Apps > Google app > Storage > Manage and tap “Clear all data.” Then restart your phone, now you can reset your voice settings. To do this, go to Settings > Google Services > Search > Voice > “Ok Google” detection and re-record your voice. After these manipulations, voice commands should work as expected.

Problems connecting to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

As with any new device, you may encounter some problems connecting the LG G6 to Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless networks. Below are the main problems with wireless interfaces found in the LG G6.

How to set up Wi-Fi

  • Turn off the device and your router and keep them inactive for about ten seconds, then turn them back on and try connecting again.
  • Go to Settings > Energy Saving and make sure this option is turned off.
  • Use Wi-Fi Analyzer to check how crowded the channel is and switch to the best option.
  • Forget about your Wi-Fi connection by going to Settings > Wi-Fi, then select Forget this network. Re-enter your details and try connecting again
  • Make sure your router software is updated.
  • Make sure that the apps and software on your LG G6 are also updated.
  • Go to Wi-Fi > Settings > Advanced and note down the device's MAC address, then make sure it is allowed access in your router's MAC address filter.

How to set up Bluetooth

  • If you have problems connecting to your car, check the owner's manual of the device and the car and reset the connections.
  • Make sure you don't miss an important part of the connection process (dialog boxes and settings).
  • Go to Settings > Bluetooth and make sure there are no additional options or toggle switches here.
  • Go to Settings > Bluetooth and delete all previous Bluetooth pairs and try to set them up again from scratch.
  • When it comes to multi-device connection issues, only future updates will be able to solve this problem.

How to do a Soft, Hard Reset on LG G6 and boot your smartphone into Safe Mode

Soft Reset

If the screen does not respond, press and hold the Power button for 10 seconds until the device restarts. It's quite simple.

Hard Reset

  • Turn off your LG G6.
  • Press and hold the Power button and Volume Down key at the same time and when the LG logo lights up on the screen, release only the Power button and then immediately press the Power button again and wait until the factory reset menu appears.
  • Press the Power button to continue or Volume keys to cancel.

Booting in Safe Mode

  • Turn off your phone and restart it.
  • When the LG logo appears, press and hold the Volume Down key until you see the Home screen, which should put it in Safe Mode.
  • With your phone turned on, press and hold the power button until the shutdown options appear.
  • Press and hold the Power Off button until confirmation appears and select OK.
  • After this, your device will enter safe mode.

Hardware control mode

If your phone's display is damaged or unresponsive, you can still perform some basic functions using the hardware buttons. To do this, do the following:

  • Turn off your phone.
  • Press and hold the power button and both volume keys for more than 10 seconds to enable hardware button control mode.
  • Press the Volume keys to navigate to the option you want and press the Power button to confirm.
  • To answer a call, you need to press both volume keys at the same time.
  • To end a call, press the Power button during a call.
  • To stop the alarm, press and hold the volume keys simultaneously when the alarm rings.

These were the most basic problems with the LG G6 smartphone and their possible solutions. If you have other problems, ask your question in the comments, we will try to answer all your questions. As mentioned earlier, the LG G6 is a good smartphone and more than likely you won't encounter any of these problems at all.

I recently purchased a second Thermalright HR-02 Macho cooler (I think there’s no need to imagine what kind of “thing” this is), and as I now know, they differ in their curved base. When I bought the first one, I didn’t take a closer look, but it’s still there, now waiting for its time.

Well, there is time, there is an opportunity, there is a crooked base in the form of a convexity in the center (above the edges ~2mm), forming a kind of rocker :) Go ahead, correct the mistakes!
(Unfortunately, there is no photo with the crooked base and the correction process, I didn’t think of taking one earlier, instead I will describe my actions)

IMPORTANT! This material only applies to coolers with a copper base; it is useless to grind an aluminum base.

I would like to say right away that this process is quite tiring physically. The actual correction began with a visit to the auto store - I bought DoneDeal valve grinding paste there (sold in both small tubes and quite huge ones) and sandpaper with a grit of 600 and 1000 - 3 and 1 sheet, respectively. The paste set consists of two tubes - medium - and fine-grained, a kit worth ~120 rubles is enough (the smallest of those that were, in a tube of 23g), and will also have enough left over for a couple of coolers :)

You will also need a piece of mirror (or some people make it on glass, but I did it, as I was told, on a mirror), of decent size, at least 20x20cm. and a container of water.

Preparation and description of the process:
1) We fix the mirror horizontally, the mirror itself must be clean - without dust and dirt, take care of this in advance.
2) Smooth and fix on the mirror with tape (or any other method convenient for you) with 600-grit sandpaper.
3) Water the sandpaper with water.
4) Take the cooler radiator by the base, apply it firmly to the moistened sandpaper and begin circular movements with your hand.
5) Continue circular movements for 2-3 minutes, adding a little water if necessary.
6) After 2-3 minutes, change the location of the circular movements, i.e. We move the sandpaper to a clean place and continue the steps, looking at the base itself from time to time - it should become uniformly copper. (It took me ~1.5 hours to achieve this result)
7) Next, attach 1000-grit sandpaper and perform the same movements 1, or 2 times if desired.
8) That’s it, we don’t need sandpaper anymore, we clean the mirror from tape and excess debris.
9) Squeeze out a small (I squeezed out about the size of a paracetamol tablet) amount of medium-grained paste (numbered 1) onto the mirror.
10) Place the base of the radiator on this paste and again make circular movements (I drew a figure eight) for 2-3 minutes.
11) After 2-3 minutes, change the place and repeat the process. We do this 2-3 times.
12) Next, squeeze out the fine-grained paste (number 2 - finishing) and do all the same movements 1-2 more times for 2-3 minutes until a completely matte base is obtained.
13) We complete the whole process by cleaning and rinsing the base from unnecessary dirt and drying it.
14) We install our cooler in its place of honor.

Recommendations for work: don’t rush to do everything at once, as I did, it’s better to stretch it out a little and do it with breaks, your hands get very tired. Find a comfortable position to work, I tried to start working on the floor, but it was terribly uncomfortable, I ended up moving to the kitchen table.

This is what I ended up with.

In this guide, I will tell you how you can mod the processor yourself. By modding a processor, I mean polishing its surface. The purpose of this mod is quite simple, because by polishing the processor heat spreader and the contact surface of the cooler or water block, you will remove micro-irregularities from their surface and maximize the area of maximum effective heat transfer, which in turn will result in a significant improvement in processor cooling. Improving the cooling efficiency of the processor will in turn result in a drop in processor temperature by 5-10 degrees, depending on your specific processor instance.

Necessary for CPU modding

To perform all processor modding work, i.e. polishing its heat spreader cover, we will need the following materials, tools and devices.

  • Actually the processor, which we will modd (polish). I'll be demonstrating polish on an Intel Core i7 920 processor, but you can use any processor with an integrated heat spreader
  • Sandpaper for dry and wet polishing; we need paper with different abrasiveness. I will use 400, 600, 800, 1200, 1500 and 2000 grit sandpaper.
  • A flat sheet of glass and double-sided tape to hold the sandpaper in place
  • Masking tape to protect the sides and back of the processor

CPU Polishing

And so, let's start modding the processor. First, you need to protect the processor from fine metal dust and other hazards using masking tape. We seal the back side of the processor and the sides, leaving only the heat spreader free from tape.

Now use tape to glue the sandpaper to the glass. It is worth starting with sandpaper with an abrasiveness of 400. We begin to polish the processor on the sandpaper. You should not use force - let the processor be polished under its own weight. It is worth polishing with forward and backward movements, after a while (about 30 passes) turning the processor 90 degrees to achieve uniform polishing.

After repeated passes on sandpaper with an abrasiveness of 400, it is already clear that the heat spreader of the processor is very uneven, the central part and edges were protruding, this clearly interfered with maximum cooling.

Gradually, one by one, we change the sandpaper to one that has a smaller grain and provides a smoother polishing. You can also add a little water to the sandpaper to provide a lubricating effect so that the sandpaper is used more economically. But I profess the dry polishing method. After 600 sandpaper, usually the nickel coating is already completely removed, but I got such a “crooked” processor that there is still a little nickel left. We continue modding with our own hands.

Having reached 800-grit sandpaper, the processor heat spreader is already quite smooth, but quite rough, so we continue our processor modding.

After sanding with an abrasiveness of 1200, you can already notice some reflections in the processor cover, which seems to hint to us that we are on the right track

And finally, after passing 1500 sandpaper, the surface of the heat spreader became very even and very smooth, the mirror effect is already noticeable, but the surface is not one hundred percent mirror yet. In principle, you can stop at this stage since the cooling of the processor will be better, and further polishing makes sense only for aesthetic purposes, but I will continue

After polishing with 2 sheets of 2000-grit sandpaper, the heat distribution cover of the processor became more like a mirror and now we can say with all confidence that the result has been achieved and the processor has been polished. I needed 2 sheets of 2000-grit sandpaper because polishing with it needs to be done carefully, since if it gets dirty or worn out, it can leave a deep scratch instead of polishing.

After finishing polishing, do not forget to clean the processor with alcohol so that nothing unnecessary remains on it. Now you can proceed to polishing your cooler or water block (water block) following the same guide - this will allow you to achieve the maximum effect, while polishing water blocks and coolers is easier this way as most often they are less crooked.

As you can see from this guide on modding a processor, polishing a processor is quite simple, and at the same time it can give a very good result (reducing the temperature by 5-10 degrees). The result of such modding can be compared with the results obtained on expensive coolers and water cooling systems for computers costing hundreds of dollars, while anyone can polish the processor, since all that is needed is materials worth 10 bucks and a couple of hours of time.

I think this kind of processor modding is even more necessary if you have a powerful water cooling system, since with the help of this guide you can fully unleash its potential. For this reason, I think every modding and overclocking enthusiast should polish their CPU

By the way, for an even more maximum effect, you can not only polish the processor and cooler/water block, but also use thermal paste of the “liquid metal” type - this way the thermal conductivity will be at its maximum, period, i.e. exactly what extreme enthusiasts need.
