Change image format to png. How to convert images to PNG format? How to make a transparent background for a picture

Online program Pixir - make a transparent background for a picture.

Sergey Feschukov

Sometimes you come across a very suitable picture for your post and everything would be fine... But the background of the picture does not match the background of the blog or block with text. Apparently no one has this problem and no one has a white background, which would be suitable in most cases. I need transparent background!

I couldn't find any good ideas on the Internet. how to make a transparent background for the finished picture, so I started experimenting myself and found a more or less suitable solution!

How to make a transparent background for a picture

Let's take as an example one simple picture in .jpg format (in general, the format is not particularly important):

There's a white background here that I want to get rid of and make a transparent background instead. An online version of Photoshop will help us with this.

Uploading our image. On the right in the “Layers” window a “Background” layer will appear, on which there is a lock (prevents the background of the picture from being deleted).

By double-clicking with the left mouse button on this lock, you can remove the lock from the background. A checkmark will appear instead of a padlock.

Now take the magic wand (toolbar, right column, second button from the top), specify the following parameters: tolerance = 21, checkboxes for smoothing and continuity(usually such parameters are standard), although you can experiment with the parameters; and click on the background of the picture (in our case, on the white background).

Now we delete the background by pressing the “Delete” button and get the image we need with a transparent background.

As a result, the output is the same image with a transparent background.

The only negative of Pixlr- you cannot save the image in the .gif format, which also retains a transparent background, but is much lighter than the .png format. But if there is no other choice, why not take advantage of this?

The difference between the PNG format and other graphics formats is that transparent or partially transparent parts of the image remain transparent when saved. When saving files in a different format, this transparency may be lost. To create and, most importantly, save a PNG file, you need to consider several points.

Instructions

  • Much depends on what graphic editor you are working in. The simplest programs, such as the standard Paint editor, do not support transparency at all. More functional programs Paint.net, CorelDraw, Adobe Photoshop (and similar ones) allow you to adjust the transparency of images and support working with layers.
  • To adjust the transparency (partial transparency) of an image or any part of it, create new layers and use your editor's tools to adjust how the layers appear. Depending on your editor, you may have to merge all layers before saving.
  • To save the image as you see it in the editor, select File from the top menu bar. From the drop-down menu, select the “Save as” command. In the dialog box that opens, specify the directory to save the file; in the “File name” field, enter the name under which you want to save the file. In the “File type” (Format) field, select the value PNG(*.PNG) from the drop-down list and click on the “Save” button.
  • If merging layers leads to loss of transparency, either save the image without merging the layers, or install a tool in your editor that allows you to export layers in .png format without losing transparency (for example, in Adobe Photoshop this cannot be achieved with standard tools, so as there is no extension .png in the list of formats).
  • Download the corresponding script from the Internet. Set a transparent layer as the background, and place the main image on another layer. Select the “File” item in the top menu bar, the “Scripts” item in the expanded menu and the “Export Layers to File” command.
  • In the dialog box that opens, select the directory to save the layers, check the box next to Fast Mode (Don't remove hidden layers), select the .png format in the "File type" field and click the "Run" button. This action will means that you will have two files saved: one “empty”, the other will contain an image with your transparency settings.
  • PNG is one of the most common formats for storing graphic information. Using PNG allows you to maintain high quality raster images, since this format compresses data without loss. In addition, PNG allows you to change the acceptable degree of transparency of image pixels, so if you want to create a collage of several photos or insert a picture into an existing transparent image, feel free to choose this format. It's no surprise that PNG is so popular among designers and creative people.
