Here is Apple's Trade-in algorithm. What is done and how

1. You come to an official Apple reseller and bring any iPhone, starting with iPhone 4. The iPhone kit is not required.

2. You say you want to trade in your old iPhone for a new one -
and which one specifically. You take off the iPhone case and show it to the consultant.

3. Employee inspects your old iPhone: Are there any scratches, cracks, chips, dents. Is the case bent or the screws wrinkled?

4. You turn off the Find iPhone function on the spot, sign out of Apple ID, remove the lock password and Touch ID. There is no need to erase information.

5. They connect your old iPhone to your computer and run an unknown service program from Apple. It reads some “service data” from the iPhone.

It is not yet known whether the program determines the originality of the installed components or whether repairs have been carried out. Please note that an employee cannot make a decision on Trade-in without a conclusion from the program.

My opinion is that the closed service Apple Service Toolkit is used. He is, but you will not enter him. Only authorized resellers and service centers have access.

6. Based on the results of this check, the seller is shown either a refusal or an amount in rubles that Apple is ready to provide as a discount on Trade-in. This amount will be deducted from the full store price of the iPhone you want to exchange for.

Example. You brought an iPhone 6s 128 GB in perfect condition and want to exchange it for an iPhone 7 32 GB. Apple priced it at 18,000 rubles.

The new iPhone 7 32 GB costs 49,990 rubles. This means that your additional payment for Trade-in will be 49990 – 18000 = 31990 rub.

By the way, my iPhone 7 Plus 256 GB was valued at 25 thousand rubles.

7. If the discount amount and surcharge are satisfactory, a Trade-In agreement is drawn up, in which the owner agrees to all the conditions, confirms the transfer of the device and waives claims.

8. There is a discount on the new iPhone, which is displayed by the Apple program. You pay the required amount in cash or by card. You can also take out a loan for this amount, but not installments.

9. Leave the store with a new iPhone, leaving the old one there forever.

A couple of thoughts about the official Trade-in Apple

The Russian version of “trade-in” differs significantly from the American one. In the USA you will receive gift card with a denomination equal to the cost of your previous iPhone and you can use it at any other time.

In Russia you must choose the new iPhone model on the spot from the range available here and now. You can’t leave to think about the certificate or wait for the desired iPhone model to be delivered to the store.

Besides this, I have a question for price, which Apple bills for older iPhones. It is clear that this is not charity. But what kind of prices??

For example, I have an iPhone 7 Plus with 256 GB ideally. This is how much my iPhone costs on online flea markets:

Why do you need trade-in at all?

How does this actually work now?

The cost of trade-in is calculated individually and only upon inspection in the store. The iPhone must work, must be purchased only from an official reseller in Russia, and must not have chips or cracks. All of Europe, America and Asia are passing by.

They accept any iPhone, starting from iPhone 4. Price range: from 500 rubles. (iPhone 4) up to 25,000 rub. (iPhone 7 Plus 256).

On site, a store employee visually inspects the device. The device is then connected to a computer, which reads data from the iPhone and communicates with Apple servers. Apple returns the discount amount in rubles or reports a refusal.

The iPhone is not disassembled. The server does everything for the employee, and the amount is calculated based on the data received by the computer. A trade-in agreement is drawn up on the spot, in which the owner agrees to all the conditions, confirms the transfer of the device and waives claims.

On the old iPhone, the Apple ID is disabled, the password is removed, “Find iPhone” is turned off, and all information is erased. The owner selects the iPhone model to which he wants to exchange it.

For this model, immediately after signing the contract (on the spot, you can’t leave to think, you can’t get a gift card or a discount certificate), a discount is given equal to the amount that the server displayed to the employee.

What could be the benefit of this trade-in?

This offer is definitely not for those who would like to save money on purchasing equipment. They will be of interest to buyers who are afraid to sit on flea markets and bulletin boards, so as not to run into money or scams. Speed is also important here: in 30 minutes you sell your old iPhone and get a new one with an additional payment.

What moments are very confusing, especially in Russia?

Prices for old devices are very much lower than the used equipment market. Having a quick look at Avito and other trade-in services, you understand that the price for an old device is unprofitable.
