Results of the "PC for 20K" competition - what gamers think a budget gaming PC should be like

One of the goals of this competition was to determine consumer preferences and, based on the data obtained, to reconsider the approach to the formation of the Impression Electronics PC model range.

It was not by chance that the terms of the competition were formulated this way. Based on many years of experience in selling PCs to end customers, the company understood that the most common questions when choosing a gaming computer are the number of FPS in popular games and the capabilities that the configuration can offer. And if the average price tag of a PC for work and everyday tasks is fixed at $450, then for gaming configurations it is already $700-800, or 20 thousand hryvnia.

For Impression Electronics, as a PC manufacturer, it is important to listen to the opinions of its target audience when forming a product line. Thus, during the competition it was possible to obtain valuable insights and a cross-section of consumer preferences.

Comments on the results of the competition and proposed configurations Vitaly Reznichenko, product manager at Impression Electronics

Over 100 applications for participation in the competition were received, but at the first stage serious filtering was carried out.

The following configurations were not considered:

  • Budget exceeded
  • Hardware not compatible
  • Without specifying required fields (RAM volume, etc.)
  • With an inaccurate indication of TX (for example, GTX1060 without indicating the amount of memory)

According to the terms of the competition, enthusiasts took the place of the manufacturer and received a task for a specific budget. I would like to note right away that the analysis of the proposed configurations provided enough data to justify one or another component in our assemblies.

If we are talking about maximum FPS on a limited budget, then the obvious way is to determine the most productive combination of processor and video card. Which is exactly what the vast majority did. The main problem turned out to be which of the remaining components to save on.

First What has been saved is the motherboard. Given the difference in cost of about 670 UAH between budget mATX chipsets with 2 RAM slots and full-size chipsets with 4 slots, preference was given to the former.

Second– amount of RAM. In view of the current situation in the RAM market (a shortage that has led to an increase in cost), 83% of participants came to the conclusion that 8 GB is quite sufficient capacity for a budget gaming model.

Third– Case and power supply. The main selection criterion turned out to be only its availability (metal thickness, dimensions, cooling were taken into account due to budget limitations). The situation with power supplies turned out to be less sad; the vast majority installed a 500W power supply.

Fourth– cooling system. The result is 50/50. BOX was preferred by half of the participants, the other half is inclined to budget cooling systems (not standard and good).

Fifth – HDD. “Joy” that came to us from Europe in the form of a refurbished HDD was not excluded from the overall rating, since it was not announced in the terms of the competition. Some participants took advantage of the loophole and included this used component in the configuration. True, this did not give the expected result: they saved money, but did not take into account the specifics of these HDD series. Freezes when loading the card affected FPS, so even a combination of GeForce 1060 + i5-7400 with a refurbished HDD showed sad results.

And finally– SSD – everything is simple here. He must be. The vast majority chose the budget 120 GB series.

AMD supporters were a bit disappointed. We will not undertake to judge, we will only voice bare numbers.

Percentage of Intel/AMD configurations (CPU)

  • Intel – 67%
  • AMD – 33%

The largest number of configurations was offered based on the Intel Core i5 processor, the second most popular family was Intel Core i3

Configurations disqualified (motherboard socket does not match processor)

  • Intel – 1 pc.
  • AMD – 7 pcs.

We'll chalk it up to the relatively recent release of Ryzen and little awareness of the compatibility of sockets and RAM.

Percentage of NVidia/AMD configurations (GPU)

  1. NVidia – 93%
  2. AMD – 7%

What can I say here - mining has changed the video card market. The availability of the AMD gaming segment at an acceptable cost is approaching zero.

GeForce GTX 1060 3GB became the absolute leader in frequency of use

Testing methodology

Group testing of video cards in GTA V always causes a lot of controversy among experts due to several points.

First, GTA V DOES NOT HAVE preset graphics quality profiles.

Secondly, testing video cards of different classes (LowEnd-HighEnd) with different amounts of video memory on identical settings becomes biased.

Therefore, for the objectivity of the results, we individually selected the highest possible graphics settings for each configuration. Which were often limited by the amount of video memory. The approach turned out to be so customized and containing a huge amount of data that publishing it in this article would be unnecessary.

Testing was carried out using a built-in benchmark. To achieve maximum accuracy, the test was run three times. The final score was the average of three consecutive tests.

Winners

Configuration proposed by user with nickname Den Lys showed 70 FPS and became the winner.

Interestingly, we offered this exact configuration as an exclusive model to a major online retailer and became the best-selling model in our lineup on Black Friday this year.

This suggests that due to the limited number of processor and video card combinations that can show high results in the game, as well as the general situation on the component market and budget restrictions, there are not so many alternatives for both manufacturers and enthusiast gamers many.

Details on the winning configuration

As stated in the terms of the competition, this configuration, which clearly illustrates the same line of thinking between the manufacturer and enthusiasts, has already been put into mass production.

Video - configuration testing:

We called the model ULTIMATE I5555 and you can already buy it on the official website impression.ua: http://impression.ua/Impression-Ultimate-I5555

With a slight margin in FPS, 2nd and 3rd places were determined.

Article updated: 01/03/2019. The information provided is relevant for the entire year 2019.

It's time to change the assembly, because the previous one lasted a whole year! Yes, a lot has changed during this time, prices jumped up and down, but now we are ready for change. I warn everyone right away: most likely, you will not meet the given budget, but this article will help you buy the most suitable hardware for your money. It will be ready when you have additional funds.

It would seem, what can you buy for 15 thousand rubles? In fact, even now it is possible to assemble a configuration for this modest amount. Let's go through each component in order and choose the most optimal ones. Let’s immediately make a reservation that we will only talk about the system unit without a monitor and other peripherals. They will have to be added separately, but with us every ruble counts. The system will definitely run GS GO, Dota 2, HotS and Fortnite without any problems with good FPS. You can even play GTA 5 and PUBG, Destiny 2, Tom Clancy and other modern games. And if you add a video card (I don’t write about it in the article because I don’t have enough money), then you won’t have any problems at all.

Let's make a shopping list, at the same time it will play the role of content - navigation through the article:

There is much more choice here, so it’s dizzying, but in fact, if you choose the minimum, there won’t be many options left. For an Intel processor on the LGA 1151v2 socket, we can take the H310 chipset. This is a budget option that will cover all your requirements. There is support for all modern interfaces, such as USB 3.1, PCI-E x16 version 3.0, SATA 6 Gb/s and so on. The chipset is quite recent, but has already been tested; it is advisable to periodically update the BIOS, because useful fixes may be released that will reduce power consumption and optimize the already stable operation. You can take another one with the same socket. You most likely won't notice any significant differences. The main thing is to look at the processor socket, we have it Coffee Lake (LGA 1151v2), respectively, the motherboard should have the same one. This is very important!

Final assembly

Congratulations! We just assembled a gaming computer for 15,000 rubles! To be honest, I myself didn’t fully believe in it, but, as you can see, everything is real, you just have to want it. So, for ease of reading, as well as for those who missed all the material that I presented above, I am posting the final assembly with links to Yandex Market.

That's all, dear readers. Now you can build your own computer, even with a modest budget. This could be, for example, a child’s first computer, on which he can not only do his homework, but also play a little modern games. By the way, read why games can slow down. The second option for using a computer for 15 thousand rubles could be an office. To work in such configurations as I gave above, it will be enough. If you like to play CS Go or Dota 2, Fortnite, PUBG, then this system, as I already said, is quite suitable, even though it does not have a video card. Nobody plays these two games at maximum settings anyway, since additional details only distract and interfere with concentration.

If you still have questions, ask them in the comments, we’ll look at them together.

Every year, new AAA gaming titles become more and more demanding of computer hardware. Which forces all gamers who want to play comfortably to update their PC at least once every couple of years. But contrary to stereotypes, it is not at all necessary to invest huge amounts of money in a gaming computer!

We have prepared two assembly options for gamers. The first config is a gaming computer for 30,000 rubles from 2017-2018, the second option is a little more expensive, but more productive. Below we will analyze in detail and explain the choice of each component. Let's begin!

Video card

The first and most important point in assembling any gaming PC. The quality of textures, processing speed of geometry and other details of the game directly depend on the performance level of the video card. All this affects the quality of the main parameter for gamers - frame rate.

In the first build option we use the Sapphire Radeon RX 460 - the cheapest gaming video card from AMD. The performance level of the RX460 is approximately the same as the GeForce GTX 970. With 4 GB of video memory, the video card will remain relevant for another couple of years. It can be purchased for about 8,200 rubles.

If you don’t mind paying a couple thousand more on top of the cost of the video adapter, we recommend taking a closer look at the most popular option in budget gaming PC builds - the MSI GeForce GTX 1050 Ti. The video card is designed based on Pascal architecture. Price - from 10,000 rubles. We have prepared for you.

CPU

“Stone” is responsible for the processing speed of all system processes. High load on processors is observed mainly in strategies and RPGs, where the computer needs to process a huge number of calculations. The market for these components has long offered a whole range of budget “stones” with good gaming potential.

The cheapest option is the Intel Pentium G4560 with 2 physical cores and hypertrading technology. The hyperclock frequency is 3.5 GHz, and when paired with a 1050ti-level video card, it allows you to play even the latest games at medium settings. Moreover, the G4560 can handle GTX1060 6gb level cards without any problems. The average price in Russian online stores fluctuates around 4,500 rubles.

For a wider budget, the Skylake-based Intel Core i5-6500 is suitable. Installing this “stone” requires an LGA 1151 socket, which is very common among budget motherboards. Four cores and support for DDR4 memory will work great in conjunction with an inexpensive video card. Starting price – 13,500 rubles.

RAM

The amount of intermediate data processed by the processor directly depends on the amount of RAM. When the game starts, locations, textures and other files necessary for work are downloaded from the hard drive to RAM. Therefore, when choosing a RAM stick, you need to pay attention to its volume and speed.

There is no point yet in equipping a gaming PC for 30,000 rubles with several sticks of RAM; one 8 GB is enough. In both versions of our build we will use Samsung DDR4-2133 8192MB. These are OEM boards that Samsung produces for other manufacturers - HyperX, Corsair, etc. The cost of such boards has not yet been increased by unnecessary radiators, backlighting and the like. The average price tag in online stores is 4,000 rubles.

Motherboard

When choosing components, you need to start from the configuration of the motherboard. The lion's share of the potential of a PC for 30,000 rubles depends on it, since it ties together all the purchased components. Before purchasing, pay special attention to the processor socket. It is recommended to first select the “stone” you like, and then buy the appropriate motherboard for it.

As a cheap option, the choice fell on the Asus H110M-K. The most minimal configuration for Socket 1151 without overpaying for “extra” frills. Made on the basis of the Intel H110 chipset, in addition to a video card connector and two connectors for DDR4 RAM sticks, the board is equipped with a video output, which is extremely useful given the presence of integrated graphics in the G4560. Starting price – 3000 rubles.

The ASRock Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming K4 is suitable for memory of a more modern standard and a wide wallet. This is the most budget option of all i5 overclocking boards based on the Intel Z170. The motherboard also supports seventh generation Intel processors. The average cost is 7,500 rubles.

Cooling

Computer games always place an increased load on every component of a gaming PC. To avoid overheating, the computer needs a good cooling system that will remove the accumulated heat in the case outside.

Both build options work well with the DeepCool GAMMAXX 300 cooler. The device is designed for a maximum power of 130 W and does an excellent job of dissipating heat. There is no point in buying too expensive cooling for a budget PC. For GAMMAXX 300 you will have to pay about 1,100 more rubles.

Hard drive

Expensive hard drives don't impact gaming performance much. Their indicators determine more how many of these same games the computer can accommodate. And although SSDs have become increasingly popular lately, a decent volume larger than 256 GB will not fit into a budget of 30 thousand rubles. Therefore, the choice remains from traditional magnetic HDDs.

Both assemblies will use Western Digital Caviar Blue WD10EZEX 1 TB as a “workhorse”. This is one of the most popular options in the budget price category. Starting price – 2700 rubles.

Case and power supply

When choosing a case, you should take into account the material and number of connectors for components. Also, some models are equipped with a built-in power supply, which is very useful for a budget PC.

An excellent option in our case is the AeroCool V2X Black case, which is equipped with a very high-quality Aerocool VX-500 500W power supply. This power supply power will be sufficient for the PC configuration given in the article. The asking price is 3,200 thousand rubles if purchased as a set, or about 3,500 thousand if purchased separately.

Total cost

So, the first budget build based on the G4560 processor:

  • Motherboard: Asus H110M-K – 3000 rub.
  • Processor: INTEL Pentium G4560 – 4600 rub.
  • Video card: Sapphire Radeon RX 460 – 8200 rub.

Total - 26,600 rubles.

Second option with a processor from Intel Core I5-6500:

  • Motherboard: ASRock Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming K4 – 8200 rub.
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-6500 – 12,200 rub.
  • Video card: MSI GeForce GTX 1050 Ti – 10,000 rub.
  • RAM: Samsung DDR4-2133 8192MB – 4000 rub.
  • Hard drive: Western Digital Caviar Blue – 2600 rub.
  • Cooling: DeepCool GAMMAXX 300 – 1000 rub.
  • Case + power supply: AeroCool V2X Black 1700 rub.) + Aerocool VX-500 500W 1500 rub.) – 3200 rub.

Total - 41,200 rubles.

At the same time, for games at medium settings, the first build for 27 thousand will be enough for you for the next few years! Then paying extra for a second config with i5 makes sense for enthusiast users who use the computer not only for games, but also for working with video, 3D graphics and other tasks where the 2-core G4560 will not be enough.

In the near future, components will only become cheaper. The assemblies do not take into account the costs of the mouse, keyboard, monitor and related accessories.

Is this possible? We dispel the myth about the high cost of PCs for gaming.

Friends, you often ask “build a gaming computer for 30 thousand rubles.” We've collected! They didn’t fit into the net thirty, but for 30,600 in "Citylink" We have a system that runs all modern games at high and maximum graphics settings.

Platform

Let's start with the platform. We had few options - Intel or AMD. The latter has a chipset AMD A320, but at the time of assembly the material for it was not available Ryzen 3 .

Of the available chipsets, Intel has H110M on a still modern LGA1151 And H81 on the slowly becoming obsolete LGA1150. On the H110 side there are a couple of extra USB with SATA. On the H81 side there is a saving of a thousand rubles.

In the case of the H110, the only choice was Pentium G4560 dual-core processor with four threads and a frequency of 3.5 GHz. This is ideal for gaming. It is 2200 rubles cheaper Core i3 and weaker by only 4-5%.

H81 Pentium was not considered. It doesn't support Hyper Threading and isn't as good at gaming as the G4560. However, for H81 there is Core i3-4170, which, due to support for AVX instructions, gives plus 8-10% performance in almost all Adobe applications, Blender, TrueCrypt and when encoding video. Taking into account the savings on the motherboard, the overpayment for this 8-10% amounted to 1,500 rubles.

Is it worth paying extra for them? Our opinion is this: if you plan to upgrade to a Core i5 or even a Core i7, then you shouldn’t overpay for a Core i3 on the H81. Despite the minimal performance difference between Haswell And Kaby Lake, it would be a shame to buy a three-year-old processor in the future. But if the system is taken without thinking about the nearest upgrades and there is no money for them, it makes sense to get this 8-10% here and now. Actually, that's exactly what we did - we took ASUS H81M-K for 2650 rubles. AND Core i3-4170 BOX for 8190 rubles. Expensive, but already with a cooler.

ASUS H81M-K

Filling

The next stage is memory. The budget was enough for 8 GB, and they decided to take them in the “two by four” option. The advantage of this choice is that the controller operates in dual-channel mode, the disadvantage is that when upgrading, you will have to change both brackets due to the lack of free DIMM slots. Another drawback is the same 8-10% performance: the H81 runs on DDR3, which means that if you completely change the system, you will have to sell and buy DDR4.

2x Kingston Valueram KVR16N11S8/4

We also saved on storage. The SSD remained in dreams, and its place was taken by a laptop hard drive WD Black per terabyte. Why laptop? Cheaper than the 3.5-inch version, cooler and quieter. Another option was considered WD Blue, which was cheaper with the same terabyte. But here we advocated reliability. Blue has a two-year warranty, Black has five.

WD Black WD10JPLX

Now the main thing is the video card. If not for budget restrictions, one might think about GTX 1050 Ti, but then we wouldn’t have gotten into the coveted 30,000 rubles. Therefore, in the absence of an extra 2500, we took the GTX 1050 from MSI. With two gigabytes, simple cooling and a price of 8190 rubles. Not much, but, as we will see, a completely viable option.

MSI GeForce GTX 1050 AERO ITX 2G OC

Finally, about the case and power supply. They didn’t skimp on the latter and took a high-quality 500-watt unit from FSP. It’s a bit much for our build, but we’ll assume that this is a reserve for future video card upgrades.

FSP ATX-500PNR-I

The building was bought, as they say, for rent. No pre-installed fans or lighting - the system was assembled in a midi tower from Accord. An extremely budget option, chosen for the reason “so as not to crumble and cut your hands.” However, the cheapness did not affect the performance - the video cards and processor were weak and hardly heated up under load. The maximum is 70°C. In idle mode - 20-30°C.

Case ACCORD E-01

Testing

The computer played all modern games. Of course, we are talking about 25-30 fps, but at maximum settings and in Full HD. You can get more. If you sacrifice the quality of graphics, then 45-50 frames are realistic. For example, For Honor They are produced at “high” settings, and at “medium” settings. But in simpler ones DOTA 2 or War Thunder You don’t have to go into additional settings; just set the detail slider to the far right. Even on “ultra” you get more than 50 frames per second.

As for work tasks, for Photoshop, 3dsmax or Premiere There are not enough resources, but it is possible to work.

It is impossible to assemble a powerful gaming system for 30 thousand. But it’s possible to make an average computer at “30+ fps” or for DOTA 2 with War Thunder. We gave you the recipe. Note that this build makes the most of 30 thousand, but it is not ideal. In a good way, this is an option to get the maximum here and now, and we’ll decide what will happen in the future later.

If you still think about upgrades, it makes sense to abandon the Core i3 and take a Pentium G4650 or Ryzen 3 1200. Also immediately add 2,500 rubles for the GTX 1050 Ti. This card will give a serious increase in fps.

Well, if we talk about minor upgrades, then increase the amount of RAM to 16 gigabytes and install an SSD. The operating system will work faster, and a large SWAP file can be placed on a solid state.

We thank the Citylink company for their help in preparing the material, and at the same time we note that if you are not ready for self-assembly, then Citylink will do everything for 800 rubles and give a three-year warranty.

Well, if you still decide to get confused, you can use the “Configurator” section on the website www.citilink.ru, where you can select components yourself or find ready-made configurations, and Citilink specialists will advise and help you choose the best option.

Many people think that it is impossible to assemble a normal computer for 15 thousand rubles. Indeed, the amount is very modest and, it seems, is not at all enough to acquire a good device. However, recently prices for equipment have decreased slightly, and this has become possible.

At the same time, there are two facts at once. Firstly, this amount does not include peripherals (monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc.). Secondly, such a system unit cannot be called powerful, but it will be quite sufficient for work, study and installation of relatively simple games (for example, Dota 2 or StarCraft).

CPU

Of course, this is the most important part for any system unit.

A lot depends on it, as it performs the following functions:

  • analysis of given commands;
  • data input and output;
  • recording information into memory;
  • operand processing;
  • memory addressing.

In our case, it will be the reference point for other components. However, in our case there is an important factor - the budget is seriously limited. This, of course, does not mean that we will purchase outdated equipment.

Important! For proper operation of multiple cores, you must install an OS no lower than Windows 7. On earlier versions, the processor efficiency will be significantly lower.

The market is such that now 95% of users make a choice between AMD and Intel. The first is distinguished by improved graphics, which, together with a good video card, gives excellent accelerator performance. The second one is characterized by low power consumption, due to which it does not heat up much. This factor contributes to high efficiency.

Taking into account our budget, we can offer the following models:

  • AMD 5350 BOX;
  • AMD A6-74000K OEM;
  • Intel Pentium G2020;
  • Intel Pentium G3220 OEM.

The price of all these devices is within 3.5 thousand rubles (depending on your region and the specific store). We recommend giving preference to the latter option. It is made on the basis of the latest Socket 1150. Processors of this family are very energy efficient and provide a decent level of performance.

Motherboard

In this path, the choice is much higher. However, given our budget, it is reduced significantly. The main requirement is matching chipsets. For example, if the processor is created on a 1150 socket, then the chipset should be H81. To avoid mistakes, look on the global network for all the boards that will fit your processor.

It is equipped with the following interfaces:

  • USB (3.0 and 2.0) – 4 pieces;
  • PCI-E (video card connector);
  • SATA up to 6 Gb/s (allows you to install modern high-speed hard drives);
  • Network iControl (allows you to control network traffic);
  • and others.

Important! Keep your BIOS updated. This will get rid of some errors and also improve stability.

Photo: the board must fit into the case

Such a device costs about 3 thousand rubles. The main advantages include low power consumption and stable operation. However, you can give preference to other models, for example, Gigabyte GA-H81M-D3H or ASRock H81M-ITX (their price is approximately the same).

What do we have? The budget is about 9 thousand, let's move on.

RAM

In this aspect there is not much choice. The main goal is to buy within your means. RAM has become more expensive in recent years, so you will have to be content with 4 GB. However, this does not matter, because in the future it will be possible to buy another bar (or even more than one). The motherboards described above support up to 16 GB of RAM.

Photo: DDR-3 now has many varieties

If we purchased an Intel Pentium, then a frequency of 1620 MHz will be quite sufficient. However, if you purchased AMD, then you need to buy a RAM module with a frequency of at least 2133 MHz. Otherwise, the processor will not work at full capacity, which is unlikely to please anyone.

As for manufacturers, there is no choice in this aspect - the budget does not allow it. Therefore, we purchase the cheapest samples (Chinese and Taiwanese).

Video card

A really good graphics card will cost more than our entire initial budget. However, we would not need such a device due to the “cheapness” of the processor.

What depends on the graphics accelerator:

  • opportunity to play modern games. However, in our case this is not so important;
  • video quality. It is worth saying that all modern video cards allow you to easily play the most advanced formats (FullHD and Blue-Ray);
  • graphic display;

Thus, we can judge that for our assembly there is no need to purchase an expensive video card. Considering the budget, you can opt for a simple model within three thousand rubles. We recommend the ASUS Radeon R7 240. This powerful accelerator will surely return all the money invested in it.

If for some reason you don’t like this model, you can use other options, for example:

  • ASUS GeForce GT 610;
  • MSI GeForce GT 730;
  • Radeon HD 5450;

Photo: a good alternative option

So, what we got is a graphics accelerator with a memory capacity of 2 GB. Thanks to the 128-bit bus, its memory will fill up very quickly and without downtime. Of course, there is no need to talk about high powers, but for an unpretentious user it will be quite enough.

Winchester

If you have limited funds, we recommend buying a hard drive with a minimum amount of memory. If you have the Internet (today it’s hard to imagine the opposite), then files such as music, movies and photos can be uploaded to some kind of storage server (for example, Yandex disk).

When choosing a hard drive, you need to follow two simple guidelines:

  • When considering the minimum volume, do not forget about the operating system. It weighs from 20 to 65 GB (depending on the version). In addition, at least 25 GB of free space must always remain for the correct operation of many applications;
  • solid-state models (SSD) provide faster computer performance.

So what do we have? Funds do not allow you to buy a solid-state drive (except for a capacity of 160 GB). Therefore, we opt for cheaper samples. The funds are enough for a volume of 320-500 GB.

power unit

Our budget has practically dried up, but we have very little left before the final assembly of the computer for 15,000 rubles. Only a power supply is required. In stores you can find many expensive (from 5 thousand rubles and above) samples with colossal power. However, we don't need all this.

The video card has the highest power consumption. In our case, this device will consume no more than 30 Watts, because the cooling is active. Thus, you can give preference to the simplest samples with a power of 300-400 watts. In a word, we take what is enough for.

Frame

We have a thousand rubles left (approximately). With this money you need to manage to buy a case. What might the requirements be? In fact, nothing, as long as the motherboard fits without problems. Therefore, you should purchase a suitable form factor.

With our budget, we can only purchase Chinese and some Korean samples. Of course, the quality of materials will leave much to be desired. In particular, low-quality steel and cheap plastic are used. However, this will not affect performance in any way, so there is no need to worry about it.

Also pay attention to the number of connectors (especially USB). We can recommend samples such as Accord B-28B and LinkWorld LC316-21. Their quality is quite adequate, and most importantly, the cost fits into our budget.
