Communication and communications. Functional elements and ergonomics

G2 has been on the market for a relatively long time and has collected enough large audience fans. During this time, the Korean smartphone managed to acquire a mini version, as well as a brother in a curved LG Flex case (read the review soon on our website). Can the G2 compete with 2014 devices from rival companies? Perhaps this main question, the answer to which easily explains the presence of a smartphone on shelves among new products to this day.

Equipment

The packaging, made of environmental paper and with soy-based ink, hides inside the device itself, a cable for connecting to a computer, Charger and a G-clip for removing the SIM card. There is no headset. For most buyers, this is a minus, since not many people use their own headphones to listen to music. As a rule, complete “ears” are sufficient for them. For others, these savings for the manufacturer translate into a lower final cost of the product.

The smartphone is available in black and white. Quite recently the release of a model in a gold case was announced. It’s obvious that LG has caught on to the market trend, where manufacturers are expanding their ranks special version. This happened with the iPhone 5, Samsung is not lagging behind, and now LG has caught up.

Appearance

G2 has has entirely plastic case. The silver edging is made of the same material. It is difficult to talk about the presence of any distinctive design in a smartphone. Obviously, Koreans don't give of great importance this issue. Some people are happy with this, some are not. However, we have what we have.

The assembly of the device is at a high level, but this does not mean that the device is reliable. One of the advantages of this article is the ability to see what condition the phone may be in after a few months of use. So let's see!

If you refuse the case, including the branded QuickWindow, the back cover becomes covered with a fine grid of scratches.

Of course, you can always place the device face down, but in this case the display will be more exposed to external influences. Even though the screen is covered with Gorilla Glass 2, small scratches still appear.

Why am I doing all this? The G2 definitely needs to be protected with display films or some kind of case. Fortunately, an accessory from LG called QuickWindow not only saves the device from scratches and other things, but also adds interesting functionality to the device. In the small window of this case, the G2 is able to display in miniature almost all the main actions that are usually performed with a smartphone. In this case, it is not necessary to open the curtain of the case. All this will appeal to fans of such accessories, of which I am not one. Actually, the result of such rejection is obvious.

Directly below the camera, the plastic also turned out to be relatively brittle and cracks appeared. We once saw something similar in the iPhone 3GS. In the LG G2, this is still a consequence of careless handling, but you should be attentive to this point.

On top there is a microphone hole and an infrared port window for controlling various household and not very household appliances.

On the bottom of the device there is a mesh for the main speaker (to the right relative to the front of the device) and a mesh covering the microphone (to the left). There is also a microUSB port and a hole for connecting 3.5 mm headphones.

The right side of the smartphone is completely empty. On the left side there is a slot for a SIM card. When you move the SIM card, the device goes into reboot.

At the back there is a camera peephole with an LED flash. Below them is the company’s special pride - the device’s power button, framed at the top and bottom with volume keys and LED backlighting. This feature became the subject of heated discussion on various forums, and sometimes even condemnation from users.

Personally, I really liked this placement of the Power button for many reasons. Firstly, when holding the smartphone with your hand, the index finger actually rests on this button and therefore it is easy to turn on the display without moving the device with your fingers, trying to reach the top edge of the device. Secondly, of course, is photographing yourself. Whether you like it or not, like it or not, many users regularly take such photos. All thanks to the idea introduced by LG. The only thing that causes discomfort in this usage scenario is that, be that as it may, you will have to clasp the smartphone with your hands and unnecessary taps on the screen may occur during shooting.

If LG's viewfinder interface included a key to lock the display, it would be much more convenient and enjoyable to shoot crossbows.

A dove on the roof, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and grandma’s carpet - with such a convenient key you won’t be too lazy to take another Selfie on any of these backgrounds.

Another fly in the ointment. In my opinion, the volume keys are located too close to the power button. They are practically fused together. Because of this, misses occur when pressing. Otherwise, everything is great and original.

Another advantage of the G2's ergonomics is the use of the narrowest frames around the display. Due to this, it became possible to set the dimensions of the smartphone to a reasonable extent without compromising large display. The screen is stretched on the front surface as much as possible. There were no accidental clicks when using the device.

Above the screen is speaker, covered with a chrome-plated decorative mesh. To the left of it there is a light sensor and a proximity sensor. Even further away there is a peephole for the front camera.

I suggest you familiarize yourself with digital parameters dimensions of G2 in comparison with competing solutions.

The device fits perfectly in the hand.

All controls are conveniently located, as we found out above. Except that the body of the device itself is quite smooth, which is why the device can slip out of your hands.

Display

The smartphone has a screen with FullHD resolution (1920×1080 pixels) with a value of 423 pixels per inch. The density is maximum, so it is almost impossible to notice the rasterization of the picture with the naked eye. The G2 uses an IPS matrix with a diagonal of 5.2 inches. Viewing angles, contrast and color rendition are at the highest level.

The brightness of the device is very high, but still does not burn out the eyes, as happens with flagships from Samsung. The light sensor performs its functions correctly and without errors. It is definitely possible and necessary to use automatic backlight adjustment.

The glass covering the screen has an oleophobic coating, due to which any dirt can be removed from the surface very easily.

If we draw parallels between the iPhone 5 and G2, then the latter has cooler and more natural colors. This is only noticeable if you directly compare the two devices. Let's look at examples (LG G2 on top, iPhone 5 on bottom):

Due to direct comparison, it is clear that the display of the Korean smartphone is superior in color reproduction to its Japanese colleague - Sony Xperia Z Ultra. Guidelines in photo form are below.

So it is obvious that the LG G2 has one of best screens among all the flagships of the market.

LG G2 (D802) has the following technical characteristics:

  • Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 800 processor, 2.26 GHz (4 cores)
  • video accelerator Adreno 330
  • RAM 2 GB
  • 16 or 32 GB data storage memory (not expandable)
  • 5.2’’ display (IPS matrix) with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels (423 ppi)
  • base camera 13 megapixels, autofocus, LED flash
  • front camera 2 megapixels
  • non-removable battery 3000 mAh
  • dimensions 70.9 x 138.5 x 9.14 mm, 143 g
  • OS and platform: currently Android moment 4.4.2 (KitKat), LG Optimus UI platform
  • GSM, HSPA+, LTE
  • Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi (a/b/g/n), access point mode, Wi-Fi Direct, Miracast, NFC, OTG ( USB connection devices via an adapter)
  • GPS, infrared port

Unfortunately, the LG G2 does not support memory cards.

There are two smartphone models on sale: with 16 and 32 GB of memory. It is unknown what justifies the refusal of additional data storage volumes, however, for a 2013-2014 flagship, the refusal of memory cards in an Android smartphone seems to be something out of the ordinary. Well, there is no ideal in the world, it’s time to get used to it.

As for the overall system performance, it only causes positive emotions. The interface, animation, opening applications - everything works very quickly. There has never been a time when the smartphone faltered at any point, including when loading heavy programs. The proprietary shell from LG Optimus UI is perfectly optimized.

Camera

The main camera of the device is a 13 megapixel sensor with optical image stabilization and 9-point focusing. The camera eye is covered with sapphire glass, which in theory protects the surface from almost any scratches.

The camera settings are initially set to a resolution of 10 megapixels (4160x2340 pixels) to match the image with a 16:9 aspect ratio. Of course, you can manually set the maximum parameter - 13 MP (4160x3120 pixels).

Yes, the G2 has true optical image stabilization. Typically, manufacturers limit themselves to digital add-ons, but LG did not compromise. Stabilization System (OIS) really helps achieve best results when shooting. This is especially true for night photography, when a significant shutter speed is required.

Let's look at example photographs.

It is obvious that the sensor copes well with most of the possible shooting scenarios. Detailing, color rendition, noise reduction - everything is at a high level. Overall, the camera is one of the smartphone's strongest points.

I'm glad that LG has done such a good job of bringing the photo capabilities of its flagship to the maximum level.

Of course, the quality of images is often a very subjective parameter. In my opinion, the Korean flagship handles photography very well.

There are a lot of preset shooting scenarios. There is an HDR mode, auto skin retouching, night photography and much more. You can create regular panoramas or all 360 degrees at once. I liked the implementation of the latter more in the HTC One, where both processing and viewing of such a panorama were thought out better.

In addition, in the settings you can activate the Cheese option, which allows you to take pictures by saying various words: “Cheese”, “Whiskey”, “LG” and others. The feature is interesting, but it works crookedly and is therefore useless. Of course, it is possible that I am somehow slurring my words, but in my defense I will say that Google Now understands me perfectly.

The front module is capable of taking photos in a resolution of 1980×1020 pixels, using retouching modes, night shooting modes, and recording from two sensors at once.

Now about the video. The smartphone allows you to create videos in a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels at 30 or 60 frames per second. The quality of the shooting is at a high level, but what can we say when we can turn to examples.

Of course, there are several additional scenarios, including creative settings, but there are also simply fun modes, so to speak, to demonstrate the capabilities of the smartphone. Let's take a closer look at the most interesting of them.

1. The front camera records video in a small window, which is superimposed directly on the main video created by the main camera. The frame type can be changed by clicking on the arrow at the bottom of the screen while recording.

2. Tracking zoom- This is a mode that is suitable for documentary filmmakers. There is a general plan that records rear camera, but there is an enlarged picture, which is isolated from the general flow and placed in a frame on top of the main frames. In this way, a smartphone can be used as a video recorder, additionally recording the license plates of cars in front. Nobody will leave!

3. AuidoZOOM. LG was the first to implement in smartphones the function of recording sound produced by a specific object. During video recording, a corresponding icon appears, after clicking on it, you need to zoom in to capture the audio stream directionally. desired object two fingers. Unfortunately, the picture quality is lost, since only digital zoom is used, however extraneous noise really muted. The add-on is interesting, but it is just a toy, the operation of which is provided by digital algorithms. I hope it is clear that the equipment that provides such directional capture of the sound stream has a slightly different implementation and cost.

However, you can see, or rather, hear the capabilities of AudioZOOM on video. I recommend using headphones and catching the setting turning on/off at 8 (on), 27 (off) and 34 (on again) seconds of the video.

Sound and video quality

The quality of audio playback is at an expectedly excellent level. Excellent for devices of this class. It is impossible to listen to music at maximum volume, but, of course, this parameter depends on the specific headphones and user preferences. However, G2 warns against listening to music at high volumes. There is nothing more to say. Everything is standard for a top-end device.

In the player settings you can select various effects, create your own playlists, view information about tracks, and more. There is a seven-band equalizer.

The smartphone also allows you to play video in the most common formats: AVI, MKV (XviD, H.264 codecs). Rest assured, DVDRip, Web-DL, BDRip even in FullDH resolutions work fine, no, they even run on the device.

When opened to Full Screen In the video on the left side of the display you can swipe your finger to adjust the backlight, and on the right you can adjust the sound.

Chips

Let's move on to the interesting goodies that the manufacturer lovingly included in its G2 and mentions them at every opportunity in all advertising brochures.

The response and reaction of the smartphone to any manipulation is at the highest level. This applies primarily to the operation of such functions as . By double tapping on the display, the smartphone wakes up from sleep mode, where it is entered in the same way. Usually G2 reacts to such activation the first time, but sometimes it only works the second time. This phenomenon is rare and not at all annoying. Moreover, during testing I got so used to this feature that I try to activate other devices as well.

Which debuted in this smartphone, is designed to fight curious citizens. Don’t feed the latter with bread, but let them get into your photographs, correspondence or anywhere else. The option must first be configured from the menu by adding applications that you don’t mind showing to a stranger. You must first activate the smartphone unlock graphic key. Now no one will look into your photos or read notes about personal growth or your Auchan shopping list. Thanks LG for this!

The built-in browser and only it has an interesting extension - CapturePlus. Using it you can save, for example, this entire review as a huge screenshot in JPG resolution. The image is processed before saving it through the Android gallery or own program views from G2. The first one never managed to save the drawing. But the alternative viewer greatly compresses the screenshot, which is why the aesthetic component is lost, but everything you need to read can still be read.

LG has its own ideas about multitasking, so the developers added the function Slide Aside. Using this utility, you can hide several applications to the side with three fingers without closing or minimizing them. They continue to work and can be easily reached from the left edge of the screen at any time with the same gesture. Whether this add-on is convenient or not, everyone will decide for themselves, but with the same ease as KnockON it does not develop into a habit.

— an application that simulates a control panel household appliances. The program contains many profiles for the most different devices. The smartphone picks up any technology quickly and painlessly.

QMemo is a proprietary notepad application. From sleep mode it is called by holding the volume up key for a long time. In addition, in any other application the utility can serve as an instant notebook. For example, when talking with a subscriber, the corresponding button in the settings curtain instantly creates a screenshot of the screen and pulls out the toolbar for sketching necessary information. A useful thing, you just need, again, to accustom yourself to using it.

We have become familiar with the main features of the proprietary shell.

The programmers at LG are definitely not eating their bread in vain - serious work has been done. Does the user need this?

In market conditions, a situation has arisen where the answer to this question is unimportant. There is a certain gentleman's set of software features that absolutely any flagship should have. The rest is not discussed! Take, for example, tracking the user's eyes when they look at the screen or look away. Similar functions have been available in solutions from Samsung for a long time. Now LG is not far behind.

For you and me, such a manufacturer’s desire to show off only gives us an excuse to learn something new. The main thing is that all these utilities and add-ons do not interfere with the use of your smartphone if they are not in demand!

Autonomous operation

Installed in the smartphone non-removable battery capacity of 3,000 mAh. The need for such a significant battery capacity is dictated by the installation of very power-hungry hardware in the device. With moderate use (10-20 minutes of calls a day, notifications and checking email in the background, surfing the Internet 2 hours a day), the G2 can last about two days on a single charge. Unfortunately, no more.

Of course, the device has a special power saving mode, which is activated at 30% battery level (configurable from the menu). The setting does not activate any special algorithms, but is limited only to quickly turning off the display backlight, turning off the vibration response and something else.

Bottom line

Those who wanted to already managed to buy the LG G2, since it was released on sale in October 2013. Is this smartphone worth paying attention to now?

Yes, it's worth it! At the time G2 entered the market, its price was very attractive and amounted to 25,000 rubles. Now the official price of the device has stopped at 19,990 rubles for the version with 16 GB of memory and 21,990 for the model with 32 GB. In my opinion, not bad for a flagship with current technical and software characteristics. Of course, in some respects the G2 is inferior to the recent Sony Xperia Z2 or Samsung Galaxy S5, but wait a minute. The price difference does not correspond to the technical differences at all.

LG G2 is reliable smartphone with reliable hardware, an excellent camera and well-optimized software. Yes, in terms of design it cannot compete with HTC One or the same Apple iPhone 5S, but this doesn’t bother many people at all. For higher quality materials and appearance you have to pay, and here you have to be aware of what is more important to you. In terms of price/quality ratio, G2 still has no competitors.

LG tried to establish itself in the big league of Android devices a couple of years ago. Even now, not many people take it seriously, although it produces first-class phones. I considered myself one of those. Although the company released offerings that were comparable to others, but for the premium class they lacked something in appearance and functionality, something that companies like , Nokia and Samsung managed to catch. When LG announced the G2 in 2013, I was still somewhat skeptical about whether it would be able to compete on an equal footing with the premium smartphones already released today. Stepping away from technical characteristics Will the G2 look like a premium smartphone? Find out in today's review LG G2 D802 32 GB

Design and body

LG has stayed true to the simple tile design with chiseled edges and a glossy back panel. Despite the 5.2-inch display, the phone is comfortable to hold in your hand, and the slight curve on the back panel gives good grip. I liked the black model better than the white one. The phone has no buttons on the sides; they have been moved to the back panel. Most likely, this was done for the purpose of maximum differentiation from competitors, and was not dictated by LG’s design features, but on the other hand, this does not interfere much.

The Quick Window Case will be included as part of LG's original offering.

On the side of the phone there is a groove for a microSIM card, on the top there is an IR port, and at the bottom there is a speaker, a connector for microUSB and headphones. The buttons are located under the 13-megapixel camera. Overall, the G2 is a noticeable improvement over what we've seen from LG before. The phone has a sturdy build, good ergonomics and looks like a premium device. An encouraging option that I really liked.

Specifications LG G2 D802 32

The display is one of the things LG has focused on, and the G2 is a prime example of this. The Full HD IPS screen is incredibly bright and readable in good sunlight, displaying deep colors without being as oversaturated as an AMOLED panel. It can compete with the SLCD 3 screen on the HTC One or Apple iPhone 5. The top and bottom of the display is framed by a narrow frame, almost invisible on the sides, creating the illusion of a solid screen.

Slightly modified Optimus user interface

From point of view software, the phone has Jelly Bean 4.2.2 installed along with the interface. The interface uses all the old Optimus G Pro tricks, plus some new ones.

The G2 is powered by Qualcomm's powerful Snapdragon 800 SoC with 2.2GHz and 2GB of storage random access memory. Despite its speed, the G2 never overheats, even after using the camera, GPS or gaming. The back panel can get barely warm, but that's it, and that's certainly impressive.

Damn fast

Multimedia LG G2 D802 32

The audio and video players in the G2 are modified in various ways and one of the main improvements is support for 24-bit 192 kHz audio, which corresponds to studio quality. This will support playback of audio files in the FLAC format, and the difference between it and the MP3 format is quite noticeable, especially through headphones. The sound from the speaker is quite loud. The phone is available in two variations - 16 GB and 32 GB, but, unfortunately, in both of them it is unclear why there is no slot for memory expansion. The G2 clearly has wide enough sides to accommodate a MicroSD card slot, and could have left the connector as in previous LG models. Let's continue review LG G2 D802 32 GB .

Very good media playback

The video player plays most video formats, including MKV. What's new: added Audio Zoom, which allows you to selectively listen to audio from a video recording, muting everything else. The problem is that for it to work, you need to use digital zoom, which reduces the video quality. No matter what I did, the effect was not very convincing.

Connectivity

The D802 supports LTE, but not TDD-LTE. However, there is a G2 variant (D802TA) that supports TDD-LT. In addition to the available 4-frequency 3G band, there is built-in Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth, NFC, Miracast, GLONASS, IR and TV output via MHL. The quality is very good and the sound from the speaker is loud enough to be audible even in a noisy environment.

There are both useful and unnecessary functions

Wireless connection is very convenient addition, which allows you to access your phone wirelessly through your laptop. Provided you have the appropriate network, you just need to enter the IP address of your phone and you can view and edit your files without the need for a physical (wired) connection.

Cameras in LG G2 D802 32 GB

The G2 boasts the first 13-megapixel sensor for optical image stabilization (OIS). This feature is similar to the one on the Lumia 920, stabilization works well for minor hand shake, but not so well when it comes to recording from a moving vehicle. But still, in this area there is no comparison with Nokia. The camera performs its functions well in good lighting conditions. The level of detail is just as good in macros; We noticed that post-processing created undesirable effects around the edges that were only noticeable at any magnification. The same thing happens when shooting landscapes; the detail of distant objects is not as clear as it should be. I think a software update should fix this. Night shots are thankfully not as bad as the Z1's, as no color distortion is noticeable in dark areas.

Good macros, but detail around the edges of the flower is not very high when viewed at a larger scale

Landscape shots are good, but again, there is a lack of detail in distant objects

Video recording is excellent, with resolutions up to 1080p at 60 frames per second. In addition to dual recording, there is also a live effect that transforms the faces being photographed and adjusts the zoom when recording video with a window overlay.

Battery capacity

The 3000 mAh battery performed well, the G2 easily lasts for two full days of continuous use. After an 8-hour test cycle to write review LG G2 D802 32 GB , there is still about 43% battery charge left.

Conclusions on LG G2 D802 32 GB

The 16 GB version of the G2 is not much cheaper than the 32 GB version. Of course, you can find them online for less, making the G2 one of the best value flagships on the market. The inability to increase the memory is perhaps the only major drawback of this phone. It has a very nice appearance, it is lightning fast, it has a great screen, and there are even more actions and functions than you need, plus a very capacious battery. When choosing between it and the Sony Xperia Z1, I would choose the G2.

The LG G2 smartphone has a number of unique features, runs on the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 hardware platform, has a 13 MP camera with optical stabilization and the ability to record Full HD video at 60 frames per second, while its cost is lower than that of its closest competitors. Is this enough to become the best and win user sympathy? We have been looking for the answer to this question for a long time.

Equipment

Hardware platform

To date, the LG G2 is the first publicly available smartphone based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 system-on-chip is manufactured using a 28 nm process technology and includes four processor cores Krait 400 running at 2.26 GHz, Adreno 330 graphics core at 450 MHz with support for OpenGL ES 3.0, and 2 GB of dual-channel LP-DDR3 memory (800 MHz). The presence of Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 also implies support for LTE networks. The capabilities of the system-on-chip allow you to record 1080p video at 60 frames/s or 2160p (4K video) at 30 frames/s. LG decided to limit itself to the first option, despite the fact that at the annual IFA 2013 exhibition the company presented many TVs with 4K resolution.

Since the LG G2 copes with playing a standard set of video files effortlessly, we made the task somewhat more difficult for it by replacing SD videos with files with Full HD resolution with high bitrate and increased frame rate. In the future, this particular set of files will be used in all test devices. By the way, all the videos were also absorbed by the smartphone without the slightest effort. This suggests that when downloading video to a smartphone, the user does not have to worry about video and audio formats, video resolution, bitrate and frame rate; the LG G2 can handle anything. Playback can be accompanied by titles (size, style, background, its transparency and text color are adjustable). The video is played in full screen or separate window(QSlide), and simultaneously with watching Full HD video at 60 fps, you can launch an HD video on YouTube; this will not slow down the device at all, and sound will be output from two sources simultaneously.

The sound volume in the headphones is above average, but the volume of the multimedia speaker is not enough in all situations. Perhaps this is a consequence of the reluctance of the developers to make the speaker rattle when listening to music at high volumes.

According to the results of popular benchmarks, the LG G2 smartphone ranks first among all devices available today. Let us remind you that by default all LG smartphones have a performance limitation associated with processor overheating.

The search for GPS satellites occurs in a matter of seconds, during which the smartphone manages to detect about 20 satellites. The data transfer speed in the WiFi network is as close as possible (the test router supports b/g/n standards). Data transfer rate in mobile network also high.

The music player remained virtually unchanged; the ability to play music from external devices connected by one wireless network or from cloud services. Another addition is to search for the song you are playing on YouTube. That is, in one click the user can find a video for the melody that interests him.

One of the most important questions about the LG G2 is its autonomy. To find out these parameters, we used the Antutu Tester application and conducted two-hour tests. Antutu's results unexpectedly turned out to be among the lowest. Perhaps this is due to the fact that an engineering sample was being tested, a commercial one was not yet available at that time, or the fact is that the device had to travel around the city in a bag, therefore, remain for some time without WiFi and not be able to cool. Once we run a similar test on a commercial sample, we will update the Antutu Tester results. As for the two-hour tests, with the exception of two of them, watching YouTube videos and playing music, the LG G2 showed record results. The smartphone owes these results partly to the new processor, but there is another trick - GRAM - graphic memory, which allows you to save 26% of battery power when displaying static images.

Used to listen to music standard player, volume at 12 out of 15 possible, MP3 files with a bitrate of 320 Kbps. In reading mode, all wireless communications are disabled, including data transmission on the mobile network, and the display brightness is set to 50%. Navigation includes in-app route planning Google Navigation. The brightness is set to 50%, all data communication modules are disabled. When playing a video, the display brightness is set to 50%, the sound volume in the headphones is at level 12 out of a possible 15. The video file format is MKV, resolution 1024x432 pixels, frame rate 24. When playing a video from Youtube, the display brightness is set to 50%, the sound volume in the headphones is at 12 out of 15 possible levels.

The table shows that the LG G2 is not just slightly better than its closest opponents with Full HD screens, some results are twice as good. For example, in two hours of reading, the LG Optimus G Pro consumes 24% of the battery charge. LG G2 for the same time, in exactly the same conditions, is content with 11%. Theoretically, the operating time of a smartphone when used as a reader is 18 hours.

Say how long the smartphone will last under typical usage patterns - several hours of reading social networks per day, automatic synchronization of two Google accounts, test messages, a few minutes telephone conversations, it’s still difficult. But what is known for sure is that under exactly the same scenario, plus several dozen photographs and performance tests, the smartphone was discharged from 100% to 35% (this includes 2 hours of navigation in Google Maps and 2 hours of reading in FBReader) in one day. At the same time, the screen operating time was 6 hours and 32 minutes - this is a very good indicator. The battery charges from 15% to 100% in exactly two hours.

Display

LG has several factories that produce matrices for TVs, monitors and mobile phones. Therefore, it is not surprising that even inexpensive smartphone models are equipped with IPS matrices. It is also not surprising that the LG G2 received one of the best developments in this area. The smartphone display has a diagonal of 5.2 inches, a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels (424 PPI) and is made using ZeroGap technology - that is, there is no air gap between the sensor and the matrix. To create minimal frames on the sides of the screen, we had to develop new type sensor, it received two controllers, while other devices use one. The display is covered with tempered glass Corning Gorilla Glass 2 with oleophobic coating. In addition, an anti-reflective layer is used, the operation of which is clearly visible when exposed to direct sunlight. Without it, the LG G2's display would be unsuitable for outdoor use, as the maximum brightness is a modest 349.5 cd/m². The minimum is 6.3 cd/m², and the average is 44.5 cd/m². Automatic brightness adjustment works on the same principle as in other LG smartphones. By setting the slider to the extreme left or right, the brightness will always remain at minimum or maximum, while moving it to the middle allows you to change its intensity to a relatively comfortable level in dim and office lighting. To make it comfortable to use your smartphone on the street, the slider has to be moved to a value of 70% or higher.

The factory calibration of the display is commendable. The temperature throughout almost the entire segment is 7000K, the gamma curve is also relatively linear and close to the value of 2.22 - this means that dark and light tones are displayed correctly. As for the naturalness of color rendering, everything is fine here too, and only green is slightly oversaturated, which, however, does not go beyond the acceptable range.

Camera

The LG G2 smartphone was the first device equipped with a 13 MP camera with an optical stabilization system. The front camera has a 2 MP sensor. Both cameras shoot Full HD video, the only difference being that the main one does it at a frequency of 30 or 60 frames/s. The difference between 30 and 60 fps is noticeable to the naked eye. Another feature of the LG G2 is nine-point focusing, which is used for the first time in smartphones. To wake the camera from sleep mode, just press and hold the volume down key. When you exit the camera, all selected settings are saved.

The viewfinder remained almost the same as in previous models; changes affected the settings and selection of shooting modes. As before, to record a video or photo, you need to move the slider in the desired direction, while most manufacturers have long added separate keys for shooting and recording video. On the left side of the screen there are shortcuts for selecting the flash mode, switching to the front camera, shooting mode and calling up settings. The shooting modes contain 12 preset settings. To find out which mode is intended for what conditions, just switch to the vertical display of the list. In this case, a detailed explanation will be displayed to the left of the modes.

Another unusual feature is the ability to manually focus. Useful in cases where you need to take several shots from the same distance, for example, photographs of the same object from different meaning ISO.

"Smart auto mode"
Manual focus, ISO200

Despite all the improvements and changes, there are two complaints about the camera. The first concerns not the fastest focusing. The second is the blurring of photographs when shooting in insufficient lighting. It will be possible to make a verdict after a comparative test of the cameras. In the near future we will compare the LG G2 and Samsung camera Galaxy Note 3. For now, one thing can be said, LG G2 received good camera, it allows you to compete on equal terms with the best of the current year.

Video review of the LG G2 smartphone

Results

LG G2 turned out to be unique in many ways. For example, this is the first smartphone equipped with a 13 MP camera with optical stabilization. It is also the first in which mechanical control keys are combined into one block located on the back side of the case, and this was done not so much to stand out, but because of research results that showed that this placement of keys is the most optimal. Indeed, in order to reach the power/lock key or volume control, the user does not have to grab the smartphone; in most cases, your index finger is already on them. Moreover, the very presence of the lock button is quite symbolic, since to unlock and lock the smartphone you can use double tapping on the screen, and the absence of a dedicated camera key is compensated by the ability to launch it by holding the mechanical key responsible for decreasing the volume. All this is done in order to minimize the inconvenience associated with the transition to a smartphone with a large diagonal screen.

Among the pleasant features of the LG G2, which make it one of the most interesting new products of the fall, we note the thin frames around the screen, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 hardware platform, excellent battery life, support for all currently available wireless modules communications and high quality sound in headphones.

The closest competitor to the LG G2 is the Samsung Galaxy S4. It is also equipped with a Full HD screen of a comparable diagonal, a 13 MP camera, a current hardware platform, has many additional accessories and is sold at a comparable price. On the side there is a slot for memory cards. Another smartphone that can compete with the LG G2 is. It is equipped with stereo speakers that produce loud and high-quality sound, a Full HD screen, albeit with a noticeably smaller diagonal, a camera with optical stabilization, but again, with a significantly lower resolution and, for some, this is important advantage, has a metal body. The price of these three smartphones is comparable, but the LG G2, despite the fact that it is just appearing on store shelves, turned out to be the most affordable of them.

List standard applications is as many as 52 icons, but really useful in daily use not so much. In addition to the standard Android set, QuickRemote (remote control for household appliances via infrared port) is worthy of attention, convenient file manager, Polaris Office and translator - Quick Translator. Another notable feature is Safety Care, a program that can automatically notify selected contacts that you are in trouble or that you haven’t answered the phone in a while. The message will contain GPS coordinates and a request for help. Very touching, of course, but it’s hard to imagine a grandfather with poor health and an Android flagship in his hands. The rest of the standard software either does not shine with functionality, or is completely an attempt by the manufacturer to lobby for its clone of Google Play.

The smartphone offers suitable applications when connecting accessories: for example, when connecting headphones, a pop-up line will offer audio and video players with browsers and automatically mute the volume if it was at maximum. It's nice and you can feel the developers' attention to detail. The only thing we can complain about is the impractical on-screen keyboard - typing messages on a 5.2-inch giant is just as troublesome as on 4-inch budget phones.

Separately, I would like to mention the fact that the standard browser supports Flash technology. Just download and install flash player for Ice Cream Sandwich and you can conveniently play online games and watch videos on sites that are not adapted for mobile devices.

Enthusiast's Corner

A little more than a month has passed since the global announcement on August 7, but we can already say that the G2 will be a friendly smartphone for enthusiasts. For example, you can get root rights without any special perversions. To do this you need: download and install branded drivers LG called LG United Mobile Driver version 3.8.1 and higher, activate developer mode in the smartphone (settings - about phone - software information - click on the build number 10 times), activate USB debugging (settings - developer options - USB debugging) , download the script to get root (easily found by searching for “ioroot6.zip G2 xda”), run root.bat and then do whatever the script asks. Superuser will be installed, root rights will work even without a reboot.

Once again, I would like to warn inexperienced users: by getting root, you will lose the warranty. Root rights allow you to change the device's firmware files from the device itself. With this you can either improve its performance and convenience, or kill your smartphone into the state of a hopeless glossy brick for 25 thousand rubles. If you don't know why you need root, don't activate it. Everyone else can happily go into Titanium Backup and “cut out” all the annoying ones from the firmware pre-installed applications, adapting the device to suit you.

But there are no custom firmwares yet. There is only recovery TWRP 2.6.3.1, which is already nice, but opponents of the Optimus UI design cannot yet get rid of it entirely. The entire set of non-standard firmware is only edited versions of foreign “operator” LG G2 like Verizon with removed apk for fashionable ringtones, etc.

Nothing is known about processor overclocking. Most likely, MSM8974 does not support it in principle, since it is a “stuffed” Snapdragon 600 with factory overclocking and a modified GPU.

In general, it is worth mentioning the fact that Qualcomm really does not like users of third-party firmware and maliciously prevents developers of free firmware from distributing drivers. Based on this, one of the most influential Android developers The Open-Source Project recently slammed the door and caused a bit of panic among Android programmers. However, let's hope for the best, because the Snapdragon 600-based Optimus G Pro, introduced in January, has already received an unofficial Cyanogenmod 10.1 and is quite open to further manipulations with the software.

Competitors

Samsung Galaxy S4

The all-time leader in sales, the locomotive of sales in the Android ecosystem, a devourer of user attention and Samsung advertising budgets. The SGS4 is slightly inferior in display quality, approximately equal in camera and sound quality, and has an equally unsightly body.

The only name that would be more concise is LG GL. By at least, it would be more symmetrical. I like the new LG naming, there is no more Optimus, I just hope that the successor to the G2 will not be called LG G2II, as happened with the L-series in 2013. Agree, LG Optimus L5II Dual is as memorable a name as if a smartphone was simply named after its IMEI.

The name G2 looks nice, but there is only one minus - the name is hard to pronounce. Every time they ask me what kind of smartphone this is, I have to say separately: Al G, . , Ji two, otherwise it turns out to be Eldzhidzhidva. In general, I’ve had the smartphone for a week now, it’s mine, because LG later took it and gave one to everyone invited, and I like it. In fact, I became interested in the smartphone after the first tests that began to appear on foreign resources, which talked about excellent battery life and a good camera with optical stabilization. This is what I primarily need from a smartphone! But, as it turned out, the advantages of the model did not end there.

Design and ergonomics

I don't really like large displays because they entail greater width devices. That’s why I said that the optimal diagonal for me is 4.5-4.7″. After getting acquainted with the SGS4 at the beginning of the year, I realized that a 5″ display can be placed in a compact 4.7″ body, because the smartphone came out more compact than the HTC One. At the same time, I also received the Sony Xperia Z, which, on the contrary, showed how big a smartphone can be with a 5″ screen. But the LG G2 was the most surprising of them - it is practically no different in size from the Galaxy S 4, but at the same time it has a 5.2″ screen! The width of the smartphone remains small thanks to completely invisible frames, the thickness of which is only 2.65 mm. Against the background of a huge display, they really get lost, it’s noticeable and you don’t need to focus on it so that others will notice, it seems that you are only holding the display. By the way, the G2 is more compact and lighter than my Oppo Find 5, which my wife now has.

In general, the presentation of G2 both in the USA and in Kyiv revolved around the fact that G2 did not introduce innovations for the sake of innovations themselves. And this is true, I’m used to listening and watching as they show us software and hardware features that obviously no one will use. Sound familiar? G2 is really different in this regard. All that is good about it is: camera (both photo and video), sound, screen, size, battery life and convenience.

In addition to the small width, the emphasis was on the controls. In principle, this is connected: due to the absence of any keys on the sides of the device, it was possible to make the smartphone so narrow. There are only three keys on the case and they are located on the back side: the lock key, around which there is a backlight, and the volume key. They are placed under the camera and it looks, at least, unusual. I like this solution, if only because the smartphone is narrow, but LG gave several more arguments. First, during a call, most people hold their index finger exactly where these keys are located, which means it will be easy to adjust the volume. Secondly, even when simply using a smartphone, you don’t need to grab it to reach one or another element from the side; there are always fingers at the back. And thirdly, the G2 is equally convenient for both right-handers and left-handers. I can’t say that this arrangement of keys was a breakthrough, but I wouldn’t call it uncomfortable either. The only thing LG didn’t provide was the ease of taking screenshots. To take a screenshot of the display, you need to hold down the volume down key and the lock key.

Due to the fact that the lock key is on the back, the smartphone is unlocked by double tapping on the display. Just take out your smartphone, tap the screen twice and it lights up. You can also block it; to do this, you need to tap on an empty space on the desktop. And it's not always convenient, because I'm used to not leaving free space on the table and make the most of its space. Also, if you install a third-party launcher, such as NOVA, then locking the screen by double tapping an empty space on the screen will no longer work, although unlocking will continue to work, because the lockscreen remains native. But, as it turned out, you can also block a smartphone double tap on the notification panel at the top, and it is available almost everywhere. And this method works even with a third-party launcher. For myself, I realized that unlocking a smartphone in this way is convenient, especially when the phone is inserted into the holder on windshield in a car, because pressing a button in it is the same as tearing it off the glass, but knocking it twice is easy. But sometimes I lock my phone with a hardware key, although after opening the lock with a double tap on the notification panel, life became even more convenient.

The body of the LG G2 is non-separable, although it looks as if the back cover is removable. This means that it is not possible to quickly change the battery or deliver a memory card. However, instead of this, there are no creaks or backlashes, the body feels solid. The plastic is completely glossy and it’s beautiful, but not practical. Fingerprints remain and are clearly visible. But the smartphone does not look cheap, thanks to the stylish textured pattern on the back. In terms of tactile sensations, it reminded me of the Nexus S, to which I was very accustomed at one time. But there is also a slight roughness or texture, so holding the G2 is more pleasant.

The headphone jack and speakers are located on the bottom edge, which is good. The speakers in this place are almost impossible to cover with something and they are not muffled when the smartphone is lying on its “back”, and as for the headphones, the wire is stretched and does not break when you hold the smartphone in front of you, for example, and put the headphones under a T-shirt. But the most important thing is the sound from good headphones really good, there was also a lot of emphasis on this in the presentation.

The audio chip installed in the G2 is capable of reproducing 24-bit audio with a sampling frequency of 192 kHz (analogous to DVD-Audio/SACD) without an “iron” limitation. And this is superior to competing solutions. Perhaps this is why LG does not bundle the new flagship with bundled headphones: so as not to spoil the impression when listening through an inexpensive headset, and if it were included, many would never change it; and so as not to increase the cost of the smartphone by equipping it with expensive “ears”.

According to personal feelings, the music sounds really cool, I listen to everything through my armatures, but it’s better to judge the quality by those who understand this more than me.

Other elements include a 2.1 MP front camera, sensors, a front notification LED (that is, there are two of them!) and an IR port on top. The latter is important for me, I used to constantly envy smartphones that have it, because controlling all the equipment directly from a smartphone is not only cool, but also convenient. You can create sets, such as “Bedroom”, “Friend Valery”, etc., and save all the equipment there, including televisions, air conditioners and in general everything that has a remote control. I liked the application for controlling equipment using the infrared port, but there was one very important point missing - a universal remote control. Now you can create your own remote control by placing on it absolutely any buttons that you drag onto the surface of the remote control yourself, and then save the signal of each using the remote control by simply pointing it at the IR port of your smartphone.

Display

The screen in LG smartphones is a strong point and the G2 is no exception. 5.2″, IPS, Full HD, 424 ppi, ZeroGap (no air gap) – this is, as it were, without compromise. Maximum brightness sufficient so as not to strain in the sunlight, but minimal - it could be less, looking at White screen in the dark, it becomes a little uncomfortable. But I think they will work on the brightness in the update. The fact is that the display brightness adjustment slider is strange; from 0 to 28% the brightness remains minimal, that is, it is not adjustable at all. It begins to grow from 28 to 99%, and when moving to 100% it abruptly switches to the maximum.

The screen received two controllers, thanks to which it became possible to make the frames even smaller, and the clarity of clicks increased. But this does not affect sensitivity, the display only reacts to static, and there is no talk of working with gloves.

The screen is covered with a protective Corning glass Gorilla Glass 2, but that's not the main thing. Many people know how picky I am about deflections/plays/creaks, and I really don’t like it when the smartphone screen floats with all its colors under light pressure. I like it when you can press on the screen, but the matrix will not feel it. This is exactly the case in G2 - the glass is very hard. The glass is also covered with oleophobic and anti-reflective coatings, thanks to which marks from the screen are easily removed, the finger does not cling to the surface, and the sun's rays are dispersed.

Camera

Photo and video shooting too strengths LG G2 and it doesn't look like LG at all. Before the already mentioned G Pro, even the manufacturer’s flagship models were equipped with too weak cameras. I don’t know if it was due to the modules or the software, but the result achieved with the Optimus 4x, Nexus 4, Optimus G cameras was poor, considering the status of the mentioned models. Now, G2 competes on equal terms with best camera phones, like SGS4, Note 3 and iPhone 5s.
LG G2 is the first smartphone on the market equipped with a 13 MP sensor with an optical image stabilization (OIS) module. Also, the protective glass is sapphire, which means it is scratch-resistant and very difficult to stain, which means it will rarely need to be wiped. Even with such glass, a small plastic side protrudes above it, which further protects the camera. All this already deserves attention, but the software also has some features that few people can boast of. For example, manual focusing when taking photographs! You can turn it on in the settings and then focus using the slider on the screen: from “macro” mode to infinity. This is very convenient; often, when you want to photograph, for example, a spikelet against the background of a sunset, the camera cannot understand that it is necessary to focus on the spikelet, and not at infinity. The G2 allows you to focus manually.

Or how do you like 9 focus points? Just like in cameras. At the same time, you can always tap anywhere on the screen and focus on a point. Well, one more feature - shooting video in 1080p at 60 fps. How many smartphones can do this now?

The quality of photos taken in good lighting is at an excellent level, comparable to the SGS4 and iPhone 5/5s. But the camera has several shortcomings, I hope they will be corrected in software. For example, when shooting video at 1080p 60 fps, the increased frequency is visible to the naked eye. But as soon as you point the lens at a slightly darker area, even during the day, the frame rate drops sharply to 15 per second. It's simply inexplicable why this happens. At the same time, standard shooting at 1080p 30 fps does not lose frames in any lighting. Also in the video, autofocus is difficult; every now and then, you have to touch the display when changing the position of the smartphone to refocus. And lastly, the sound in the video is not the best; if you record a concert, the quality will be seriously inferior to that in the SGS4 and iPhone 4s/5/5s.

Examples of photos and videos:

(pay attention to macro photographs, shooting with manual focus is a pleasure!)

Specifications

As far as I understand, the LG G2 is the first smartphone that is already available for purchase and is available with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, clocked at 2.26 GHz. The graphics are also new - Adreno 330. RAM - 2 GB, ROM - 16 or 32, I have 32. There is no slot for memory cards, which is a pity. Need I say how fast the smartphone is? I think not, in in this case, the tests speak for themselves. Even the Extreme test in 3DMark said that the test was too simple for the device.

But the most interesting thing in all this is that the G2 does not heat up. Even in games it is very difficult to heat it up. In particular, I played 3 matches in FIFA 14 and the smartphone remained cold. After all the benchmarks - cold. When shooting video at 60 fps - cold. Well, the most surprising thing is that after three matches in FIFA 14 while charging the phone, it is cold! Again, I've never seen anything like this before.

And let’s move on to one of the most significant and unexpected advantages of the device – its autonomy. The LG G2 has a large capacity battery – 3000 mAh. But it’s not the number itself that is surprising, although the placement of such a battery in a compact case is also a merit of LG; after them, only Xiaomi placed the battery so tightly in its new flagship.

The smartphone lasts longer on a single charge than any other smartphone I've ever owned. It’s not for nothing that G2 is the first in the autonomy test of the GSMArena website. The results are as follows: I don’t charge it every day, but do it right at night on the second day. This is already a breakthrough for me, because I use my smartphone very actively. Total, 40-42 hours with 5-6 hours of display operation, an hour Wi-Fi distribution, half an hour of games, watching Youtube, reading Twitter and news, Email, etc. Not a single smartphone could withstand this. If you use the G2 constantly, the screen will work for more than 10(!) hours! In fact, there is a logical explanation for such autonomy. The device has a separate GRAM memory stack, which contains a static image currently displayed on the screen. Thanks to this, processor resources are used less frequently.

BY

The smartphone has Android 4.2.2 installed, on top of which is the proprietary LG interface. There are a lot of interesting things inside, such as a translator, backup manager, functionality guest access etc.

The LG G2 pays a lot of attention to the software component. And, despite the fact that LG has not yet hired a software designer and everything looks completely ugly, as well as localized, the functionality is rich. For example, pop-up windows that appear on top of the current task turned out to be very convenient. If you receive a call, G2 will not redirect you to the dialer, but will simply show a pop-up window with information about the incoming call and the option to answer or reject the call. The same thing happens with incoming SMS.

From the notification shade you can call up: normal settings, and a pop-up window with sound settings for basic tasks. Below I have provided screenshots of some applications from the LG interface. I would like to note that I don’t always do this, but I liked the software here because it will definitely be used by ordinary people who may never know that they can download alternative programs from Google Play. Why? Because the note taker is convenient, the translator is generally super, it even translates in real time based on the camera image, if the Safety Care application, which is a very functional security guard for a child or girl, there is even an application that shows everything you did with your smartphone in one feed throughout the entire time. You can even specific date take a look. Yes, people like me won’t use much of this, because we found alternative solutions a long time ago, but even I really liked LG’s backup manager, which saves everything: from settings to applications. This is what bare Android lacks.
