Let's first figure out what it is, why create this image, and what to do with it later. A backup is a complete image of the operating system. Simply put, this is a copy of the system drive C. If necessary, you can create a copy of other partitions. In case of any problems with the operating system (stopped loading, a virus, some kind of error, breakdown of hard disk, or SSD), we can completely restore Windows 10 from the image we created.

After recovery we will get working system with all the settings, installed programs, and files that were at the time the backup was created. And you don’t have to configure and install everything again, as if it were after clean install Windows 10, or after reinstalling (resetting) Windows 10. In the same way, unlike restore points (which store only the most necessary system files). IN in this case we keep a complete copy system partition, which we can restore at any time, even to another hard drive.

I recommend creating a backup copy of Windows 10 immediately after installing and configuring the operating system. Firstly, it will weigh less, and secondly, after its restoration we will receive a ready-to-use and configured system without excess garbage. WITH installed drivers, programs, etc.

Windows has a standard tool that you can use to create a backup. This is the method I will use. And of course, I’ll show you how to use the saved image if necessary. There is another way using DISM.exe. I won't consider it. It is complicated, and I don’t understand why it is needed at all. After all, there is an easy way to create a full image of Windows 10.

Create a Windows 10 backup using a standard system tool

We need to go to the “Backup and Restore” section. It is located in the control panel. To avoid searching for it for a long time, I advise you to open a search and start typing the word “backup”. The item we need will appear in the search results.

A window will appear in which you need to click on “Create a system image”.

I will store the system image on an external hard drive. You can also save it to a flash drive. Save the image to the same physical disk, on which the system partition is located, is not entirely correct. In case of any problems with the disk, you will lose all files along with the backup copy. Therefore, it must be a different drive. Select it from the list and click “Next”.

By default, only a copy is created system disks, which are necessary for the operation of the operating system. But if necessary, you can also select other local drives for archiving. I left only system ones.

The next window will contain archiving information. Which ones were divided, and on which drive. To begin, click on the “Archive” button.

We are waiting for the backup process to complete.

Upon completion, the system will prompt us to create a recovery disk.

It is needed so that if Windows 10 stops loading, we can boot from this disk and restore the system from a backup, or perform other steps to restore the OS boot. Now the image of the entire system (and possibly other partitions you select) is stored on our drive. We will be able to use it at any time.

How to restore Windows 10 from a backup

To restore Windows 10 from a backup, you need to go to the system recovery menu. It can be opened in different ways. We will consider two cases: when the system boots (the computer turns on), and when problems arise with loading Windows(errors, blue screens, breakdown hard drive etc.).

During the recovery process, all files on local disk There will be replacements with files from the image. This means that, for example, if you created a file after creating a backup copy, it will be deleted. Of course, only on the partition that will be restored.

Let's look at both options:

If you are downloading from installation disk, then after selecting the language you need to click on “System Restore”.

We are interested in the “System image restoration” section.

The drive on which the Windows 10 backup is stored must be connected to the computer. The system itself will find and offer you the latest accessible image systems. If necessary, you can select the image manually.

In the next window there is an option to format all hard disk and re-partition it. But this will delete all data from the hard drive. Most likely you just need to click “Next”. Only those partitions that are in the backup copy will be overwritten. Other sections will not be affected.

All that remains is to wait until the process of restoring the computer from the image is completed. The speed depends on the size of the image itself, the drive on which it is stored, and the drive installed in the computer.

Other backup options

Everything I wrote about above can be done through DISM. Running commands in command line. In the same way, you can restore an image created in DISM. True, I don’t see the need for this when it is possible to create an image through a separate tool in the system, and restore it by pressing a few buttons, and not by running 10 commands.

There is also special programs, which you can use to create a complete image of the system partition with Windows 10, or other partitions, and restore them if necessary.
