Garmin fenix 5x sapphire watch review. For athletes in the city

Without changing its traditions, Garmin presents new models of its gadgets every year at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January.

This year 2017 we were presented with a new model of Garmin watches - Phoenix 5.

Moreover, this time the numbering of smart sports and travel watches immediately jumped from version 3 to version 5.

There are several versions of such names.

On the one hand, this is because the word “Phoenix 4” does not sound very good in Chinese, or maybe the number 5 means the model has moved to a completely new level?

Let's find out in this review.

If we go back a little to the Fenix 3 model, the next new version of Garmin Fenix 3 HR received a built-in optical heart rate sensor on the back side - HR.

At the time, this was a revolutionary addition.

The built-in HR heart rate monitor allowed you to monitor your heart rate without a chest-mounted cardio monitor constantly, all day long.

I talked about the features of this modification in my review -

Although, for the sake of fairness, I would like to note that the priority of the chest heart rate monitor, as a more accurate measurement tool, has been preserved in Garmin models. If you connect a chest heart rate monitor to a watch with a built-in HR sensor, the watch always switches to the chest strap. I talked about this feature in my review of Garmin HR chest monitors -

In January 2017, Garmin presented version 5 in three modifications:

Phoenix 5– standard improved model of watch with a price from 599 dollars to 899 dollars. Depending on the bracelet and the sapphire crystal of the case.

Phoenix 5S– a standard miniature watch model, which is aimed at a female audience (thanks to the smaller case sizes and bracelet colors)

The price of this model ranges from 599 dollars to 850 dollars. with metal bracelet and sapphire crystal.

Phoenix 5X- top version of the watch with the ability to use topo maps and also with the option of plotting routes in the watch + 16GB of memory for maps on board.

The price of this cartography model starts at $700. up to 850 dollars with metal bracelet and sapphire crystal dial.

What is the main difference between these Fenix 5 models?

Consider the comparison table that Garmin offers.

Let's start with the appearance:

Phoenix 5 body

For the S version, the case size is smaller - 42mm x 42mm with a case thickness of 14.5 mm - this is the smallest watch in the 5-series Garmin.

The case size of version 5 is between the S-version and the X-version and occupies an intermediate position - 47mm x 47mm with a case thickness of 15.5mm.

The case size is the same for the Fenix 5X and Fenix 3HR – 51.5 mm x 51.5 mm, while the body thickness of the Fenix 5X is 1.5 mm thicker than the old Fenix 3 HR (17.5 mm).

It turns out that the largest watch in this series is the Garmin Fenix 5X.

But this “fat guy” has onboard support for topo maps, 16GB and more than 20 hours of operation in GPS mode.

Maybe this is why the case became thicker by 1.5mm?

Fenix 5 Display Resolution:

In the old Fenix 3HR model, the display resolution was 218x218 pixels with a diameter of 30.4mm.

In the Fenix 5 and Fenix 5X versions, they have an on-board resolution of 240x240 pixels with a display size of 30.5 mm.

The Fenix 5S version is no different from the Fenix 3 HR - both of these models have a display resolution of 218x218 pixels. Only in the S series the display size is smaller - 27.94mm.

The only thing that is not yet clear is the type of display. Garmin writes that in the old version of the Fenix 3HR the display was transflective - (more details about what it is -).

The specification for version 5 states that this display is visible in the sun with low energy consumption and is constantly active. I would like to receive a detailed transcript for this watch. 🙂

Fenix 5 watch battery:

What I like about the Garmin Fenix watch is that it has a long-lasting battery that lasts a very long time compared to smartwatches from other well-known manufacturers.

I provide a comparative table of battery performance for Garmin Fenix 5 and Fenix 3 HR watches according to the manufacturer's specifications.

Garmin watch typeSmart watch mode,
in hours
GPS navigation,
in hours
GPS in economy mode (Utlratrack),
in hours
Phoenix 5 336 24 75
Phoenix 5S 216 14 40
Phoenix 5X 288 20 50
Phoenix 3 HR 336 16 40

Judging by the manufacturer’s assurance, the most durable watches in terms of power consumption will be the Garmin Fenix 5 for everyday wear in smart watch mode, and the Garmin Fenix 5X for GPS mode.

Although if you want to extend the life of your watch, you can extend it by disabling unnecessary sensors or transmission protocols - Bluetooth, external sensors that you don’t currently have, screen brightness and backlight time. If this is not possible, use my recommendations - “How to charge your Garmin Fenix 3 watch while hiking”

For older models, I myself tested the Fenix 3 HR battery - you can read about these experiments with battery robot modes here - “Testing the battery of the Garmin Fenix 3 watch” and in this review of the Fenix 3 vs Fenix 3 HR watch -

But even without using these magical hacks, the operating time of the watch is already very good! 🙂

Garmin Fenix 5 watch water resistance:

All watch models have 10ATM. So you can swim with your watch in a pool or river, but not go deep-sea diving.

What does 10ATM (100 meters) mean - let's see what the manufacturer himself says - http://www.garmin.com/en-US/legal/waterrating

GPS navigation:

All models support GPS and GLONASS.

Memory:

If the old Garmin Fenix 3HR model had 32 MB on board, then in the Fenix 5, Fenix 5S series the watch already received 64 MB, of which 54 MB are available for installing applications, widgets and watch faces.

A separate model here is the Garmin Fenix 5X - which has 12 GB on board.

This is due to the fact that the 5X model supports topo maps with navigation capabilities. It is into this model that you can load maps.

The manufacturer promises color topo maps of the USA in this model. The only question: What should other buyers who are in the CIS do? Most likely, European watch models will come with pre-installed topographic maps of the countries where the watch will be sold.

I think Garmin will tell you this point a little later in detail.

What’s interesting is that in the Garmin Fenix 5X model you can not only work with topo maps, but also navigate with movement indications right in the watch.

You get a portable navigator on your hand.

Of course, Garmin has similar watch models that work with topo maps - I'm talking about the Garmin Epix watch, which I reviewed -

Sports characteristics of the Garmin Fenix 5 watch:

All old indicators have been transferred to the new model.

  • Virtual partner
  • Vomax indicators
  • Running speakers
  • Recovery time after training
  • Personal records
  • Accelerometer with step counting capability

All sports activities have migrated from the old models to the new 5 series in Garmin Fenix watches (Running, Triathlon, Swimming, Hiking, Cycling, Rowing, Skiing, Golf, Training).

Protocol support in Garmin Fenix 5:

— The watch has support ANT+ for sensors

Bluetooth(BLUETOOTH SMART (4.0+) with low power consumption, unlike the Bluetooth 4.0 LE support in the Gamrin Fenix 3 HR watch. Now version 5 supports Smart Sensors that work via Bluetooth. And this means that you can connect third-party sensors that work according to this protocol.

WiFi— available in all watch versions.

Sensor support

The watch supports sensors using the ANT+ protocol

  • HRM-RUN - chest heart rate monitor for running -
  • HRM-Swim - chest heart rate monitor for swimming -
  • HRM-Tri - chest heart rate monitor for triathlon
  • HRM-Premium - chest heart rate monitor for fitness -
  • Tempe - wireless temperature sensor -
  • Foot pod - wireless pedometer - review coming soon!
  • Garmin Virb Ultra 30 Action Camera -

There is also support for cadence and speed sensors for cyclists.

From external changes:

Regarding the built-in heart rate sensor in the watch - HR.

Garmin Fenix 5 and its modifications have a flatter optical heart rate sensor compared to older models.

Detachable watch straps in the form of latches - QuickFit technology.

The strap mechanism also works for older Garmin Fenix 3 models.

This mechanism will now be used on future Garmin watches.

You don't need to use a screwdriver or special tool to change the strap. Everything works with latches.

Strap colors: purple, orange, black.

Moreover, you can change rubber, leather and metal straps depending on your taste and external conditions.

For example, for swimming I would take a rubber strap, for hiking in the heat - a metal bracelet so that my wrist does not sweat.

Sales of the new Fenix 5 model are planned for the end of April 2017. Therefore, the watches will appear in the CIS towards the end of spring - April - May 2017.

How to distinguish the Garmin Fenix 5 from the Fenix 3 HR?

To distinguish the Fenix 5 you can simply pay attention to the Start button. On the Garmin Fenix 5, it has a red border.

If you turn the back of the watch, you will immediately see a flatter HR heart rate sensor. In the Fenix 5 model, it will practically not protrude from the body, unlike the Garmin Fenix 3 HR.

Conclusions: Which Garmin Fenix 5 model should you choose?

As a regular owner of Garmin Fenix 2, then Fenix 3, then Fenix 3HR watches, I want to note that in the new 5 series Garmin did not add such a super revolutionary one.

If we compare it with the Garmin Fenix 3HR model, we have the same built-in heart rate monitor, Sapphire crystal and an improved, tuned watch interface.

If you already have a Garmin Fenix 3 HR model, I would strongly consider whether it is worth changing and paying extra for a new 5 series model.

For tourists and athletes:

If you are in the mood to buy your first Garmin watch, I would take a closer look at the Garmin Fenix 5X model. Mapping, more memory, more battery capacity, Sapphire crystal.

But in this case you will have to pay “only” 700 dollars. with a rubber strap or 850 dollars with a metal bracelet.

For athletes in the city:

In this case, I would take the Garmin Fenix 5 version

The price of this model is 600 dollars. And the Sapphire version with a rubber strap ($700) and a metal bracelet ($850).

For people who want a miniature watch, I would recommend the Fenix 5S for sports.

The price of this model starts from 600 dollars. and ends around $850. with metal bracelet and sapphire crystal.

Again, you can see for yourself that prices go towards dollars. USA.

Where to buy Garmin gadgets?

On the downside, I note that Garmin has raised the starting price for the Fenix 5 series.

Any model without Sapphire crystal starts at $600. This limits future buyers of this model and narrows the circle of owners. 🙁

If you already have a Fenix 3 HR, I would consider upgrading to version 5.

For sports, the functionality of the old watch is sufficient.

If you are just buying your first watch, I would look towards the Garmin Fenix 5X.

You can count on long battery life in each operating mode (the exact time depends on the modification of the watch and settings). With 100m water resistance, you can travel wherever you want with confidence.

    Great readability on the go

The bright, full-color LED-backlit Garmin Chroma Display provides excellent readability in any environment. Transflective technology, which simultaneously reflects and transmits light, allows the dial to become even more readable in intense sunlight. The fenix sapphire versions are distinguished by the presence of sapphire glass and a Wi-Fi module for automatically connecting to your home wireless network and synchronizing workouts directly with Garmin Connect.

    Wrist pulse

Elevate technology allows you to capture heart rate data directly from your wrist without the need to wear a chest strap. In addition to counting steps and monitoring sleep, the watch uses your heart rate to estimate the number of calories burned by the intensity of your fitness activities.

Quick-change straps to suit any style

A wide selection of quick-change QuickFit bands in leather, metal or silicone make it easy to mix and match styles with any sport or activity. No tools are needed to swap, just pull back the latch and swap the straps.

    Advanced Performance Metrics

Every fēnix 5 watch is packed with sophisticated coaching features to help you monitor your fitness and performance. Improved analytics for training status and training effect show aerobic and anaerobic values of your training - so you can see the effectiveness of your actions and even compare results with your peers. VO2 max crunches data including your running speed, beats per minute, and heart rate variability to estimate the maximum amount of oxygen you can consume in a minute. Other fitness metrics include recovery tips with a recovery timer and recovery check, plus a race predictor that estimates your ideal finishing time based on your current VO2 max.

    Advanced running dynamics

Now you can analyze even more running data. Training features combined with advanced physiological metrics and advanced running dynamics help you improve your fitness and overall performance:

    • Performance Assessment: After running for 6-20 minutes, fēnix 5 compares your condition in real time with your average fitness level
    • Lactate Threshold: By analyzing your pace and heart rate, fēnix 5 estimates the point at which your muscles begin to tire quickly
    • Cadence - number of steps per minute
    • Stride Length - Shows stride length in real time

Want more? By pairing your watch with a compatible heart rate chest strap such as the HRM-Run, you can access these additional fēnix 5 metrics:

    • Vertical oscillation and proportion - degree of hop when running and efficiency in relation to stride length
    • Ground Contact Time and Balance - Shows how much time in motion your foot is on the ground rather than in the air and allows you to test your running symmetry
    • Stress Score: fenix 5 measures your heart rate variability while you're standing still for 3 minutes to give you an approximate stress level. The scale of this is from 1 to 100; Low scores indicate lower stress levels

Profiles for swimming, skiing, rowing sports and more

In addition to running features, the Fenix 5 also offers dedicated profile sets to help with swimming, skiing, golf and rowing. For swimmers, the device tracks distance, pace, stroke count and more. Alpine ski/snowboard mode sets speed, distance, elevation change and auto-start activity (with automatic lift pause) and more. The range of features for rowing activities includes the number of strokes, frequency and even distance per stroke. Golf mode gives you distance to the front, back and middle of the green for any course downloaded through the free Garmin Connect app, and also adds improvements such as stat tracking (fairways hit, etc.), green view, recognition and impact analysis.

    Travel with navigation

To keep you on track, every fēnix 5 model provides precise navigation and tracking using GPS, GLONASS and additional sensors (altimeter, barometer and compass). The built-in altimeter provides altitude data to accurately track ascent and descent, while the barometer can be used to predict weather changes by showing short-term trends in air pressure. 3-axis electronic compass shows the direction whether you are moving or not. There's also a built-in gyroscope to help improve positional accuracy (and conserve battery life) in UltraTrac mode.

So many ways to stay connected

Smart Notifications 2 through fēnix 5 lets you receive emails, texts, and alerts right on your watch—whether you're on the trail, on the golf course, or just away from the computer. Other smart features include automatic uploading to the Garmin Connect online community, online monitoring, and social media sharing through our free Garmin Connect apps for mobile devices.

    Custom apps and watch faces

You can customize any fēnix 5 watch with free app downloads from our Connect IQ store. Change the watch face, add data fields and widgets to make using your device more convenient.

Garmin continually works with leading companies and software developers to make our fenix watches even better to use. Uber, Strava, AccuWeather and many more offer apps and widgets that let you tailor your fenix 5 to fit your lifestyle more than ever.

    Your lifestyle on your wrist

You can also download the free Garmin Face It app to customize your watch face with any photo from your smartphone. Just download the app, select an image from your photo library, customize the style and set it as your watch face. Whether it's a beautiful landscape from your hike or a photo of your puppy, with Garmin you can personalize your watch and make it truly unique.

    Amazing design, lots of features

Athletes and adventurers have different tastes and come in different sizes. That's why the fēnix 5 series consists of several models that vary in size and appearance to suit preferences, wrist sizes and the requirements of each workout. Each version offers a variety of stainless steel finishes, QuickFit watch band combinations and premium feature sets to give you the look, performance and effortless comfort to suit your aesthetic and sporting interests.

The watch we are going to talk about today can be called the most equipped fitness tracker on the market. The Fenix 5 model incorporates all the best practices from its products: a full set of necessary sensors and very functional software. Buyers of this watch will find everything they need for running, swimming, triathlons, hiking and general everyday activities. At the same time, Fenix 5x is also a well-equipped smartwatch. All this is packaged in a sturdy case made of steel, sapphire crystal and durable plastic. For such a list of features you will have to pay a lot, but looking ahead, it is worth noting that this model is worth the money.

Equipment

The delivery set is similar to that of the model with which we recently became acquainted. The watch, instructions and charging cable with a proprietary connector are supplied in a small cardboard package. The cable plug is inserted at a 90-degree angle with respect to the case, and to charge you will need to remove the watch.

Design

The first impression after unpacking the watch is that it is big. The largest model in the Fenix 5x line was tested: a version with a case diameter of 51 mm. The watch is not only large, but also quite rough in appearance. This impression is enhanced by the polished bezel, angular shapes, screws on the case and protruding buttons. After the glamorous smartwatches, Fenix 5x looks truly brutal. On a small hand, the gadget looks provocative and attracts attention. This is definitely not a women's watch. They are unlikely to fit under a suit; moreover, not every cuff of outerwear can be pulled over them.

Materials

The physical dimensions of the watch are 51x51x17.5 mm, weight - 87 grams. The body is made of steel and fiber-reinforced plastic. In terms of build quality and materials, the watch gives the impression of a reliable device that will survive not very careful treatment. The display in our version is covered with sapphire glass, which protects from scratches and shocks. The case is waterproof, and the maximum declared diving depth for the watch is 100 meters.

Ease of use

Despite its size, the watch turned out to be quite comfortable in everyday use. Of course, dimensions impose their limitations, for example, on the style of clothing. As I already said, it will not be possible to hide a watch under every cuff. But otherwise, neither weight nor size interfere with wearing the watch 24 hours a day. During my use, I took the watch off very rarely and slept in it every night - after all, the watch also monitors sleep. The first day you get used to it, but then you stop feeling the presence of a large object on your hand.

The silicone strap that the watch comes with is soft and comfortable, and can be sized to fit almost any hand, especially those with wide wrists. The width of the bracelet is 26 millimeters, it can be changed to any compatible one.

The watch display is not touch-sensitive, which is a plus for a sports-oriented model. There are 5 buttons for control: three on the left and two on the right. On the top left is the backlight key, and pressing it for a long time brings up the quick access menu. Just below are the menu navigation keys - up and down. On the top right is a button to confirm the action and call up the sports menu. It is additionally highlighted and is well felt blindly. This is also true for other keys. The menu structure is designed for use in conjunction with buttons. In general, the menu is quite clear and can be easily understood without instructions. Many menu languages are supported, but there is no Ukrainian in it.

Display

The Fenix 5x has a 1.2-inch transreflective color matrix with a resolution of 240x240. I got the impression that, given the size of the case, the display could have been larger. But its advantages are different and they cover this disadvantage. The display is similar to that of Vivoactive 3 and is made using Memory-in-pixel technology. This means that while a static picture is displayed on it, it does not consume energy.

The downside is the low contrast, but in return you get excellent visibility in all conditions and battery life unattainable with most smartwatches on the market. The color of the display is enough to display a map and heart rate zones, and nothing more is required from it. Don't look at photographs on it.

The brightness is adjustable within 10 gradations, and for comfortable use a minimum level is sufficient. In this case, the brightness can be adjusted separately for everyday life and separately for sports mode. To automatically turn on the backlight, a standard gesture for viewing the time is used, which functions quite correctly. By the way, the gesture can be enabled according to a schedule.

Equipment and software

Fenix 5x is equipped with a good set of sensors: GPS, optical heart rate monitor, gyroscope, barometric altimeter and compass. There were no complaints regarding positioning accuracy during use. The search for satellites is carried out within 5-20 seconds, in rare cases in the city - up to several minutes. There are also no questions about the operation of the heart rate monitor; when correctly positioned on the arm during normal running, its indicators are very close to the chest sensor. It is worth considering that during interval training or in the gym, the heart rate monitor is no longer accurate, but this is a problem with the photoplethysmography technology that is used in heart rate monitors of this type.

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are used to connect to a smartphone and download data, and Ant+ is used to connect external sensors. There is a built-in memory of 16 GB, but this volume is used exclusively for storing training data and terrain maps. The watch can signal notifications, completed laps and other messages not only by vibration, but also by a speaker.

Sport

Tracking physical activity in all its manifestations is the strong point of Garmin and Fenix 5x, in particular. It is easier to list those sports that cannot track this clock. There is running, cycling, swimming, and rowing. Moreover, each of these sports is supported in two forms: outdoors and on an indoor simulator. Of course, triathlons are also supported. The menu even includes skydiving, rock climbing and a variety of physical activities in the gym. But diving is not supported, despite the body’s ability to withstand pressure up to 10 atmospheres.

Each supported sport has its own screen with data that is displayed on it at the time of activity. For example, for running it is: pace, time, distance. For water sports: speed in nautical miles, distance and time. For mountaineering: time, altitude. Regardless of the sport type, the second screen after the time is your current heart rate and the specific heart rate zone. This is very convenient for those who primarily need the heart rate indicator for constant monitoring. Next after this is the map screen, thanks to which you can see your current location.

Fenix 5x can not only collect information, but also analyze it and provide advice, and not only in the Garmin Connect app. After finishing your session, the watch will notify you about the best time to train next, how long you need to recover, as well as your fitness level, such as VO2Max. Based on your performance, the watch can make approximate time estimates, for example, a possible marathon time. Thanks to this, to some extent, the watch can replace the trainer, but only partly.

Smart features

This list should include the display of notifications about incoming calls, messages and other events. But, unlike Vivoactive 3, Fenix 5x cannot respond to messages; this feature, at least in the current firmware version, is not provided. Cyrillic notifications are displayed correctly, there are no problems here. You can also control music playback on your smartphone, but the watch does not have a built-in player. And a nice bonus will be the weather forecast.

Autonomy

The capacity of the built-in battery is unknown, but Garmin claims 12 hours in smartwatch mode and 20 hours in GPS mode, which in theory will allow you to complete a full Ironman triathlon, for example. In practice, with frequent notifications, minimal display brightness, but active exploration of the watch's capabilities and running workouts every other day, the watch lasts about 10 days. And this is a very good result. Full charging time takes 1.5 hours.

Site evaluation

Pros: design; body security; functionality; autonomy; ease of use

Cons: price in Ukraine; Design and sizes may not suit everyone

Conclusion: In fact, Garmin Fenix 5x can hardly be called just a fitness tracker. This is a full-fledged sports computer that will allow you not only to track and collect information, but also to intelligently analyze it, as well as give advice based on your physical activity. It is worth considering that due to its cost, size and design, the watch is definitely not suitable for everyone, but those who clearly understand why they need such a set of capabilities and how to use them will be satisfied. An important advantage of the Fenix 5x is their autonomy and level of protection, which allow you to go further and longer with them than with many competitors in this segment.

The Garmin Fenix 3 was truly the perfect watch for me, but when Garmin showed off the Fenix 5x at CES 2017 in January, I knew exactly what to do. I hesitated a bit about the idea of buying it and finally ordered the watch on Ebay. Today I’ll tell you about the transition from Fenix 3 and the main differences.

Video review of Garmin Fenix 5X

But I'll start with the unpleasant. Despite the fact that this watch is definitely the best (if sports is part of your life), its cost still confuses many. The 5X model starts at $700, which is the same price as flagship smartphones. On the other hand, there are practically no alternatives on the market, so if you want such a wearable gadget, you will have to pay.

Three versions of Garmin 5 were introduced in January: 5S, 5 and 5X. The first ones are smaller, they are for girls, the “five” is larger, and the “X” version is the largest (42, 47 and 51 mm, respectively). Although, compared to Fenix 3, the dimensions of the 5X have not changed, that is, lucky are those for whom previous generations were too large.

But the difference is not only in size, there are other differences. The glass in the 5S and 5 can be either mineral or sapphire, but in the 5X it is only sapphire. The autonomy varies: in Fenix 5 it is the largest and allows the device to live up to 14 days in smartwatch mode. Fenix 5X in this mode will last 12 days, and the small 5S – 9. An unattainable result for ordinary smartwatches. But at maximum load (GPS+HR) Fenix 5 will last 24 hours, 5X – 20 and 5S – 14 hours. That is, enough for any training.

But the main difference between the 5X and the other two modifications is that the larger model has full turn-by-turn navigation with the ability to download maps. The 5X has 16 GB of memory installed on board (5 and 5S - 64 MB each), onto this storage you can download maps of the locations you need. Just so you understand, the full map of Ukraine takes up just over 400 MB, which means you can easily download the whole of Europe with points of interest to your watch. And this is a very useful innovation, without which, to be honest, the Fenix 5 and 5S look like a facelift, and the 5X is a new generation. Navigation can be used for geopositioning when you are on an expedition, for example, or for training. One of the most useful examples is the Round Trip Distance feature. The watch can create a running or cycling route for you anywhere in the world so that you return to your starting point. Just choose the type of activity, mileage and route direction (you can choose any) and the watch will offer three route options. Choose - and go!

If we compare Fenix 5 and 3, then the new ones have a display resolution of 240x240 pixels, instead of 218x218, and there are more colors - 64, instead of 16. As before, the display is made using Transflective memory-in-pixel (MIP) technology. It's like electronic ink, or like Pebble, when a static picture is always visible (the screen does not go dark), but no energy is consumed. Thanks to this we have excellent autonomy.

There is also now no version without HR, and the sensor itself has become flatter and does not put pressure on the hand. During training, you can tighten the strap a little more, and the data will be quite accurate.

The design has changed minimally, the arrangement of the elements is the same, which is good. Control is carried out using five large mechanical keys, no touch elements. Last year I said that a touch screen is not needed here, but it would be more convenient to control the map, maybe in the next generation we will point our fingers on the screen.

In the new generation, the interface for charging and synchronization has changed. Now it is more compact and double-sided. In 95% of cases, it is more convenient than the cradle for Fenix 3, but if the battery on the “three ruble” ran out during a long marathon, then you could put the watch and the cradle on your hand and continue the activity, charging the watch from the power bank. Now we have to take them off.

We refreshed the interface a little and added animations. It has definitely become more pleasant, but there are also significant moments. For example, the music control application has been updated. Previously, there was neither the track name nor its length on the screen - nothing, just a few buttons. Now there is much more information, and management has become more thoughtful.

There is also a virtual trainer that analyzes absolutely everything to give you the right advice during and after training.

If anyone doesn’t understand why I call this watch the best multisport smartwatch, watch the video review, there are almost half an hour of revelations. In short, this watch not only allows you to collect the most accurate analytics from the largest selection of sports activities, but also allows you to customize absolutely everything for you: from the watch itself, watch faces and applications, to deep customization of training mode windows. For example, you need to constantly see three fields with pace, distance and heart rate - please, you need a route and the current time - whatever you want. And there are probably more applications for “phoenixes” than for any other watch. Even watch faces are like applications here, because they can display a lot of different information.

Of course, there is a huge number of sensors on board, including a gyroscope, barometer, thermometer and others, almost all the necessary connection interfaces, including ANT+ for connecting with external sensors (cadence, heart rate monitors, etc.), as well as a full-fledged smart component. The watch will show messages, calls, notifications from social networks and calendars - everything that the same Apple Watch can do. Only these ones last two weeks in smartwatch mode.

Yes, it’s expensive, but having no alternative, we buy it this way. A few words about competitors: there are none. Why - explained at the end of the video.

Unpacking and setup:

Brief overview of the main characteristics

The largest watch in the line is the Garmin Fenix 5X. They are a utilitarian tool that can be used in almost any conditions. Moreover, the owner can determine GPS coordinates if there is an urgent need for it.

The line also includes models 5 and 5S. They are an attempt to appeal to as many buyers as possible, so comparing them to the 5X is inappropriate. The Garmin Fenix 5X is the only no-compromise option that comes with a ton of different features.

Design

The first thing that catches your eye after getting acquainted with the watch is its dimensions. The diameter is 51 mm.
The display and bezel are on the front side of the gadget. The bezel is secured with five screws.

In general, the appearance of the model can be called brutal. The watch will definitely appeal to those who love utilitarian gadgets.

Utilitarian - having a practical purpose.

The gadget's weight of 98 grams is unlikely to suit fragile girls. Obviously, the Garmin Fenix 5X is intended for a male audience. Sports enthusiasts should know that the heavy weight of the gadget can cause a lot of problems while running.

The model comes exclusively with standard glass. One of the key advantages that the Fenix 5X has is the ability to dive underwater to a depth of ~ 100 meters.

It is possible that the watch will withstand immersion to greater depths, but the manufacturer claims only 100 meters. This will be quite enough even for diving. There are 5 navigation buttons to control the display.

The screen resolution, which is 240 x 240 pixels, allows you to use it without straining your eyes. Color screen. The display amazes with the quality of the “picture”.

In addition, it is possible to read information even in bright sunshine. Despite such a high-quality screen, the gadget boasts a long battery life.

Many modern smartwatch models are controlled by touching the display, but Garmin decided to go their own way. In order to get used to such an unusual control method for the modern user, it is worth using the watch as often as possible.

In general, menu navigation can be called simple and intuitive.

Navigation Features

Garmin has made it possible to download a variety of full-color topographic maps, as well as bicycle and even golf maps. This feature cannot be called revolutionary, but it is quite rare.

The key difference between the Garmin Fenix 5X and other models is that this smartwatch is a complete navigation tool. The gadget can be used even during long hikes in the wild.

Another useful feature is the ability to plot your own route. The watch has 16 GB of memory. This will be enough to download all the necessary maps.

Such a large amount of free memory cannot be used for other purposes. For example, to download music tracks.

Considering all the capabilities of the device, we can say that it has a full-fledged navigation system on huge visual maps. This unique feature will be appreciated by lovers of outdoor activities, long hikes and travel.

If you look at the reviews of those who have already successfully tested the Garmin Fenix 5X, there were no GPS connection failures during hikes. Another unique feature of the watch in the area of navigation is the ability to search for places that are nearby.

Starting up the GPS system is also quite fast. Total start time may vary depending on location. For example, high-rise buildings and dense buildings have a negative impact on the system startup time.

Installing free maps on your watch:

Heart rate monitor

The watch is equipped with a heart rate monitor. It allows you to track your heart rate and constantly updates the information. All information is displayed in a special application called Garmin Connect.

Garmin Connect app

The accuracy of the rhythm monitor is quite high. It can be compared with the performance of chest straps used by athletes.

Sports activities

Playing sports couldn't be easier with the Garmin Fenix 5X smartwatch. The watch records different metrics for different sports activities. For example, for those who run, the watch collects information about distance and speed, as well as heart rate.

If you purchase additional accessories, the gadget will be able to track step length, distance and much more.
Moreover, the device recognizes some sports independently. For this purpose, information from the accelerometer is used.

In order to obtain the most accurate information, you should use special sports modes before starting a workout. The fact is that automatic recognition of different types of exercises is necessary for fast driving around the city or for short walks.

In addition, the device is capable of collecting standard indicators. We're talking about calories, steps, sleep duration and distance traveled. If the need arises, the watch can remind the user to move more often.

Golfers have the ability to track shots and distance. In addition, it is allowed to use a special digital counting card.

Smart watch

Garmin Fenix 5X has many smartwatch features. Among them are the calendar, notifications and weather forecast.
The menu in the gadget is a complex system. This is due to the abundance of various functions that can be useful to many users.

Getting to one item or another on the menu can sometimes be quite difficult. It’s even more difficult to remember your “route” to the selected item in the menu. You can solve the problem using widgets.

Notifications

Garmin Fenix 5X supports so-called notification centers on modern smartphones. This means that almost all applications can trigger their own alerts.

Alerts appear directly on the device screen. You can simply view them or click on a button to get more information. All notifications can be deleted if they bother the user and distract his attention.

In this case, notifications will be deleted not only from the watch display, but also from the smartphone. All missed notifications can be viewed using the widget.

Battery

The battery allows the watch to maintain normal operation for approximately 2 weeks in smartwatch mode. If we are talking about GPS mode, then this will no longer be 2 weeks, but 24 hours. In some cases, the battery life is significantly reduced.

Most often this occurs due to the presence of various additional functions.

The process of charging the gadget is extremely simple. The company included a proprietary cable. It connects to the back of the Fenix 5X.

Proprietary - own, patented.

Conclusion

The Fenix 5X is perfect for those who love the wild. Lots of built-in maps, as well as a powerful battery and storm warnings. All these features are designed for adventure lovers.

The same can be said about those who love triathlon. Running, cycling, golfing and swimming are activities you can enjoy with the Fenix 5X, which offers advanced features for athletes.
