How to download here maps to your phone. Review of the Nokia HERE Maps app for Android

HERE Maps is the successor to Nokia Maps for Android. The visual design is simply perfect. The style is modern, serious, but fits perfectly into any interface. The fonts are perfect, navigation is simple and convenient, all parts are configured for large diagonals and resolutions. Visual 10 out of 10.

Cards are a functional combination that can perform a large number of functions, but at the same time it must be easy to understand. Automatic gestures allow you to use the program as navigation, especially since it simply determines the level of congestion and creates a good route. Pedestrians have every opportunity to use the city transport function. Just enter your destination and you will find out how to get there by metro, bus and other types of roads and subways. Easy-to-access voice instructions.

All addresses and routes are stored in the cloud, so they only need to be set once. The main feature of the program is the possibility of offline implementation - when traveling, vacations or business trips, you can easily save a map of suitable places and enjoy navigation anywhere without having to pay for roaming. In the category of mapping applications on the Android platform, the undisputed leader is undoubtedly Google Maps. However, very soon this quiet life may come to an end, as the HERE application from Nokia is about to be released. We looked at the first beta version of this program and came to the conclusion that the battle will be serious.

Nokia's mapping service has always been somewhat in the shadows for Android users due to the lack of a corresponding mobile application. And it’s completely in vain, because HERE Maps surpasses many competitors in terms of coverage and reliability of maps. Suffice it to say that they use data from the world's leading manufacturer of digital maps and geographic information systems, Navtq. HERE Maps currently covers 196 countries, including navigation services in 96 countries.

After Nokia released a series of its own Android smartphones, which included proprietary maps, the question of developing a version of HERE Maps for other devices was only a matter of time. And this happened: the company confirmed it, and the first betas leaked to the Internet.

When you first launch the app, you'll be asked to register, but you'll only need to do this if you're going to save your favorite places and routes. The main place in the program window is occupied by a map of the area, only there is a search bar at the top, and several small buttons are located in the corners.

Using the menu button, you can open the program control panel, which contains buttons for switching to navigation mode (“By Car”), calling up a list of saved places (“Collections”), switching to offline mode, and accessing settings. On the right side there is another sliding panel, which makes it possible to change the map display style. In general, the information about the area provided by the application seemed quite detailed and reliable to me.

Motorists will be pleased with the navigation function, which is available in both follow and review modes. The application has a voice prompt function, including in Russian, but the files necessary for this must be downloaded additionally. In the car mode settings, you can set the unit system, route selection options, enable speed alerts, and so on.

If you don't drive a car, then Nokia HERE will also be a very useful application for you. It is capable of not only plotting routes for walking, but also knows everything about the movement of local public transport. To do this, you only need to indicate the purpose of your trip, and the program will immediately lay out all the possible options for achieving it with the number of transfers and stops.

Finally, we have saved for you the most pleasant feature of the Nokia HERE application, which, it seems, will become a trump card in the fight against Google Maps. The fact is that all its features can be used without an Internet connection. To do this, select “Download maps” in the menu and then indicate your country. Cards are quite large, so you need to make sure you have enough space on your SD card.

Overall, the Nokia HERE app looks quite interesting and promising. Thanks to versatile and up-to-date map information, a user-friendly interface and the presence of all the necessary functions, it is quite capable of competing with Google Maps. And the ability to work offline may even tip the scales in the fight for the favor of users. Disadvantages include insufficient optimization and some “thoughtfulness” of the interface, which will be especially noticeable on weak devices. However, do not forget that this is only a beta version.

You can download and try Nokia HERE beta yourself.

Good day, dear users and readers of the best portal called Trashbox! This time I will tell you about a very interesting mapping service HERE WeGo. Quite a convenient and practical thing, but first things first. So, let's go!

Home screen

Immediately after launching the application, the map opens. If you have allowed the application to use geographic data transfer, then you will almost immediately see your location on the map. Along the edges of the screen there are buttons that are found in almost all maps. In the lower left corner there is a button, when clicked, you will see yourself on the map. In the upper right corner you will find a house icon, when you click it, the system will immediately plot the route home, if, of course, you have specified the address in advance. You can do this by clicking on the same “house” in the upper right corner of the screen. The system itself will prompt you to set the address of the house. Finally, in the upper left corner there is a compass, which, for some reason, got lost and asked me to calibrate, but I never managed to do it, I think I’ll figure out this problem later. At the bottom of the screen there is a “Nearby” button that will show you places, various establishments, gas stations and parking lots. At the very top of the screen there is a regular search and a route building menu. I really liked the beautiful animation that appears when you long press on a building. By the way, almost every building here is displayed in 3D. We swipe to the right and a menu will open, which contains a lot of interesting things.

Main menu

The three main menu items are at the top. These are “Map”, “Navigation” and “Collections”. We are now in the “Map” section. If you tap Navigation, navigation items will appear on the screen, such as your current speed, distance traveled, and direction of travel. In the “Collections” item you can select places that have been previously included in this list.

After these three points comes the offline mode switch. This is what most people praise this application for. No, not the switch, but the mode itself. Its essence, I think, is clear. The application does not use the Internet, and navigation remains working. By the way, the “Nearby” button, which I wrote about earlier, is not available in this mode. It's unfortunate. Even the maps.me maps that I reviewed have this function in offline mode.

The next menu item we have is “Download maps”. By clicking on this item, we are taken to a simple map loading menu. We immediately see a list of countries whose maps we have already downloaded, if you have done this in advance. The free and used memory space of your device is shown at the top of the screen. At the bottom there are two buttons “Update” and “Load more”. Everything is clear here. However, the cards here are quite significant, so be prepared for this.

The settings here are simply simple and everyone can understand them.

Functional

Information about public transport in WeGo is implemented conveniently and practically, but there is one thing: only tram routes and metro lines are displayed on the map. The route is highlighted in red and the number of the tram that runs along this route is written above the line. Different metro lines are highlighted in different colors.

Just like Google Maps, if you want to find a specific street, the search engine will suggest different modes of transportation for you to get there. When you click on a building, the service will provide you with information about that building, phone number and website.

Bottom line

Pros:
  • Availability of offline mode
  • Quick Home Button
  • The ability to find out about places nearby without difficulty
  • Automatic change between day and night mode
  • All buildings are displayed in 3D
  • The only public transport options are trams and metro.
Cons:
  • Meager settings
  • There is no way to download only the required territory
Without a doubt, HERE WeGo is a convenient mapping service. Almost its only competitor is maps.me. I am sure that you will find this service much more pleasant than WeGo. But still, the taste and color - all felt-tip pens are different.
