New Galaxy S5. Smartphone Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900F: review, description, specifications and owner reviews

The Samsung Galaxy S5 was nothing special at the time of its announcement; fans of the brand expected much more from it, but in reality there were minimal changes, but the cost has increased noticeably. It did not live up to everyone's expectations, which primarily concerns the case, which remained plastic. This is a huge drawback, because it says nothing about the flagship status of the device. A fingerprint scanner has appeared, but this won’t surprise anyone. The smartphone has become relevant only now, when its price has dropped noticeably and it can feel confident in the budget segment.

Technical characteristics of Samsung Galaxy S5:

  • screen: Super AMOLED, 5.1"", 1920x1080, capacitive, multi-touch;
  • processor: quad-core Qualcomm MSM8974AC, 2.5 GHz;
  • graphics accelerator: Adreno 330;
  • operating system: Android 4.4;
  • RAM: 2 GB;
  • built-in memory: 16 GB;
  • memory card support: microSD up to 128 GB;
  • communication: 2G: GSM 850/900/1800/1900; 3G: WCDMA 850/900/1900/2100; 4G: LTE 800/850/900/1700/1800/1900/2100/2600;
  • SIM: micro-SIM;
  • wireless interfaces: Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac (2.4 + 5 GHz), Wi-Fi access point, Wi-Fi Direct; Bluetooth 4.0; IRDA; NFC;
  • navigation: GPS, Assisted GPS / GLONASS;
  • cameras: main - 16 MP (LED flash, autofocus), front - 2 MP;
  • Sensors: light sensor, gyroscope, motion sensor, heart rate sensor, fingerprint scanner;
  • battery: 2,800 mAh, removable;
  • dimensions: 142 x 72.5 x 8.1 mm;
  • weight: 145 grams.

The box is made of wood-style cardboard, which looks great.

The interior space was divided into several departments, each of which contained something different. The Samsung Galaxy S5 review showed that the smartphone itself lies on top, and the space below it is occupied by accessories. There is nothing outstanding among them: a microUSB cable, a charger, a headset and documentation.

The case has a monoblock design with the following dimensions: 142 x 72.5 x 8.1 mm. The side frames have become an order of magnitude thinner, which has improved the ergonomics of the device. But they decided to save on materials by using plastic instead of more premium and tactilely pleasant metal or glass. It was stylized as metal, but upon contact the plastic immediately reveals itself. Samsung Galaxy S5 duos review clearly demonstrates that the design of the back perfectly complements the overall impression. The plastic on it was stylized to look like leather, it is soft to the touch.

Buyers can choose from four body color options - black, gold, blue and white. We reviewed the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini using the blue version.

The front panel is a monolithic plate constructed of glass. There were no slots left in it where functional elements were built in. At the top there is a slot for the earpiece, next to which there is a standard set of sensors, a front camera lens and a notification light.

At the bottom is the “Home” key, on either side of which there are two touch keys. It has a bright shiny edge, and also has a built-in fingerprint scanner.

The power control button has been moved to the right side.

On the left is the volume rocker.

The IR port, 3.5 mm jack and hole for the noise-cancelling microphone are located on top.

There is a microUSB and MHL port installed at the bottom, but you can access them only by slightly opening the flap. Next to them is the main microphone.

The design of the back is made in the same style as most other flagships - at the top center is the main camera module, surrounded by a square frame, and below it we see a block that includes an LED flash and a heart rate sensor. At the bottom, or more precisely on the left, there are two slots for the multimedia speaker.

The SIM card tray can be accessed by removing the back cover.

Samsung Galaxy S5 sm g900f review showed that the body fits perfectly in the hand, and by today's standards it can be classified as compact. The rounded shape of the back side and, of course, the texture of the material, which does not slip at all, contribute to a secure grip. When using it with one hand, you do not experience any discomfort - your finger clearly hits the power button, and its compact size allows you to reach even the top curtain.

Samsung Galaxy S5 16gb review revealed one unpleasant point - the shiny edging that runs along the entire perimeter of the case quickly becomes covered with fingerprints, fortunately they are here and can be wiped off easily. The backdrop is designed more successfully, so it will be less demanding to maintain.

The cover of the device is removable, and therefore it was not easy to achieve 100% solidity of the body. It fits tightly, and for quick opening, the manufacturer left a special recess, prying it with a fingernail, which allows the lid to be removed very easily. Everything was fine in terms of assembly - we couldn't find any creaks or play. The only downside is the location of the SIM card tray - it is under the battery, which is why hot-swapping is not possible.

The smartphone has a stunning AMOLED display, which distinguishes all the manufacturer’s devices. A diagonal of 5.1 inches and a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels give a pixel density of 432 ppi. Of course, the screen is covered with protective glass and has an oleophobic and anti-glare coating. The display has the classic advantages and disadvantages of AMOLED panels. Multi-touch supports 10 simultaneous touches.

The advantages include excellent brightness and contrast, excellent viewing angles and a deep black tint, which IPS matrices cannot boast of. A good reserve of brightness in combination with an anti-reflective coating provides comfortable working conditions in bright sunshine. And by setting the level to minimum, it will be convenient to read e-books without tiring your eyes. Samsung Galaxy S5 sm g900f 16gb review revealed the presence of a mode for operating with gloves, which increases the sensitivity of the display.

The disadvantages, albeit questionable, include oversaturation of shades. If you are used to more faded IPS panels, then at first it will strain your eyes. But after some time you get used to it and just stop paying attention.

Performance

Technical characteristics of the Samsung Galaxy S5 are built on the Snapdragon MSM8974AC chip, the frequency of which reaches 2.5 GHz. In addition to this there is 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of user memory. There is also an older modification, in which twice the amount of built-in memory is available. The volume can be increased by installing a microSD card up to 128 GB.

Samsung Galaxy S5 synthetic test results

It is also possible to connect external storage devices using OTG. After turning it on, only about 700 MB of RAM remains for the user's needs, so you shouldn't count on multitasking. Applications must be constantly unloaded from memory, otherwise the shell begins to slow down.

At the time of release, the Samsung Galaxy S5 had almost top-notch characteristics. The interface does not slow down, the transition between desktops and applications is smooth.

Autonomy of the Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone

Samsung Galaxy S5 lte review moves on to the 2800 mAh battery. This is not a record figure, but good system optimization allows us to hope for the best. With continuous reading at the minimum comfortable brightness level, the smartphone lasted almost 17 hours, and when playing videos on YouTube in HQ format via Wi-Fi, the charge was enough for 12.5 hours of battery life. In games, the battery lasts for 4.5 hours. The results are pleasantly impressive, especially when compared with its predecessor, which at first got very hot and sat down literally before our eyes, until the manufacturer corrected the situation with firmware updates.

Cameras

Samsung Galaxy S5 duos sm g900fd review showed that the smartphone received a main camera with a resolution of 16 megapixels and a 2 megapixel front camera. The latter takes photos and videos in FullHD format, and I must say that the quality is very good. At the time of its release it was one of the best cameras.

The main camera received ultra-fast autofocus (aiming at the subject takes no more than 0.3 s), stabilization and a single-section flash with medium brightness. The smartphone can shoot video in 4K and was distinguished by the fact that it was among the first to have the ability to pinpoint focusing. With its help, you can highlight a certain part of the frame and blur the background. With automatic camera settings, pictures are saved in size 5312x2988. While reviewing the Samsung Galaxy S5, we took several test shots, examples of which you can see below.

Conclusion

In the new generation, the smartphone received improved characteristics, display, and autonomy, but the body is still plastic, which is not at all what you would expect in one of the company’s main flagships. To summarize, we can say that the device is really good and its characteristics will suit most users in 2017, although now they are more in line with the budget segment.

Body SAR level (US)

The SAR level indicates the maximum amount of electromagnetic radiation to which the human body is exposed when holding a mobile device at hip level. The highest permissible SAR value in the USA is 1.6 W/kg per 1 gram of human tissue. This value is set by the FCC, and the CTIA monitors mobile devices' compliance with this standard.

1.58 W/kg (Watt per kilogram)

Another interesting hardware feature is download acceleration: the Galaxy S5 can simultaneously download data via Wi-Fi and LTE, increasing speed. This works if the remote server supports multi-threaded uploading of files from an arbitrary location. But since there are no completely unlimited tariffs with LTE in our country, you need to use Download Booster with great caution: the speed gain will be noticeable only when downloading large files, and they will quickly use up the available gigabytes.

Display

The display of the Galaxy S5 has grown to a diagonal of 5.1 inches, while the body has also increased compared to the S4 - thicker frames had to be made due to water resistance. This is a FullHD matrix, made, as you might guess, using Super AMOLED technology with Pentile (reduced number of green subpixels). Pentile is clearly visible due to its peculiar moiré pattern in light areas. However, if you don’t look closely at the screen and don’t know about Pentile, you’ll hardly notice anything: rather, what catches your eye is the richness of the colors and the highest contrast.

The screen remains highly readable even in direct sunlight: at the same time, colors change using a special algorithm: they become completely unnatural, but the contrast increases even more. And this is the most important thing: it is important to see at least something in such a situation, and not try to process photos for printing.

Software

A proprietary Samsung TouchWiz shell is installed on top of Android 4.4, which, no matter how much it is scolded, does not greatly change the logic of the interface of the operating system itself. Unlike “bare” Android, there are many improvements here. The most interesting of them are familiar from the Galaxy S4 - for example, the eye tracking function: while you look at the screen, it does not turn off.

There is a multi-window mode: for example, you can split the screen into two parts and display data from different applications in them: browser and email client, YouTube, Hangouts, and so on.

Undoubtedly, the flagship Samsung Galaxy S line is a trendsetter in the Android smartphone market. These smartphones can be liked or disgusted, but the annual premiere of the new Galaxy S attracts a lot of attention; rumors about the next generation begin to be discussed almost at the premiere itself. Samsung Galaxy S5 was no exception, despite the fact that even the most “lazy” publications managed to review this phone in detail, we could not ignore it.

Since its inception, this line has been the main one among all smartphones based on Google Android. For a long time, the company manages to maintain its leadership position, successfully competing with Apple. Of course, marketing makes a significant contribution to successful sales volumes, but the technical component is no less interesting. We will see whether the expectations of fans and critics have been met during detailed testing.

Availability of Samsung Galaxy S5

At the time of testing, the average cost of the Samsung Galaxy S5, according to the Yandex.Market service, was 29,990 rubles. The pricing policy completely repeats the history of previous flagships, keeping within the unofficial mark of 30,000 rubles.

Appearance

One of the main questions before the premiere of the Samsung Galaxy S5 was whether the manufacturer would decide to radically change the design of the case. Interest was fueled by the dismissal of the head of the relevant department shortly before the premiere. But the revolution did not happen; the most daring concepts remained the imagination of designers. So, let’s meet, before us is the Galaxy S4, I apologize for the reservation, Samsung Galaxy S5.

The design of the case has not actually changed; in fact, the materials have remained almost the same, the base is plastic. But the texture of the back cover has changed, now it somewhat resembles the roof lining of a VAZ-2101, or even a plaster. This coating looks better than the gloss of the Galaxy S4, but worse than that of the Note 3 and Galaxy S4 Black.

But there are also advantages, this is practicality. The phone does not slip out of your hands, and the absence of aluminum will have a positive effect on the quality of signal reception. The case is available in several colors, including blue and gold; we tested classic black.

The smartphone has acquired a moisture and dust protection system, it is implemented like the Galaxy S4 Active, using a rubber seal under the cover and a plug on the connector. Apparently, for the sake of protection, the dimensions of the case have also increased; now they are 142 x 72.5 x 8.1 mm with a weight of 145. And this is due not only to the increase in the diagonal of the display, the side frames on the front panel have also increased. As expected, this also affected the speaker volume; compared to the Galaxy S4 Black, it sounds quieter.

The protection of the Samsung Galaxy S5 complies with the IP67 standard, the smartphone can withstand immersion of 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. The function will be of interest to people who prefer an active lifestyle, and will also allow you to protect yourself in case of accidental exposure to water.

Another feature of the new flagship was the appearance of a fingerprint scanner located in the mechanical Home button. It allows you to improve security when working with personal data, and the scanner can also be used to unlock the device. To scan, you need to slide your finger over the button.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the heart rate sensor. During the presentation of the Galaxy S4, much attention was paid to the SHealth application, then it had just appeared, and the capabilities were limited to a traditional set of sensors. Samsung Galaxy S5 adds a heart rate sensor. It is located in the flash unit under the camera. To receive data, you need to put your finger on the sensor, after a few seconds you will be able to see your pulse.

Otherwise, the smartphone maintains traditions. The power button and volume rocker remain in their places. The location of the connectors is also the same, with an audio jack on top and a USB 3.0 port on the bottom. It uses a connector like the Note 3, this approach reduces charging time and significantly speeds up file transfer. However, judging by the data (we tested a sample without components), the smartphone received a regular micro USB cable; you will need to purchase a USB 3.0 cable yourself. What this is connected with is not entirely clear.

The back cover is removable, the battery can also be replaced if necessary. There is also a slot for a microSD card and a slot for miniSIM.

There are no creaks or play of parts, but is this really to be expected from a flagship smartphone?

Filling

The heart of the Samsung Galaxy S5 is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with a frequency of 2.5 GHz. There was information on the network about Snapdragon 805, but until now there is no ready-made SoC on this chip; we can expect it to appear in the summer. All current flagships are built on Snapdragon 801. Compared to the previous generation, this chip provides a 14% increase in processor and 28% in graphics. Adreno 330 with a frequency of 578 GHz is responsible for graphics. In the future, a version with an eight-core Exynos 5422 chip is expected to be released, trained to use all 8 cores at once.

Another question was raised by the decision to limit ourselves to 2 GB of memory. Compared to Note 3, LG G3, Sony Xperia Z2 with 3 GB, this looks strange. With increased load on the processor, new functionality, or filling the system with software, you can expect stuttering. At first it was not noticeable so often.

Screen

The display diagonal has increased, it is 5.1 inches with Full HD resolution. This is a Super AMOLED matrix with a pixel density of 432 ppi. I'm glad that the manufacturer did not go for the sake of marketing, abandoning the race for pixels. The display, compared to the S4, has changed for the better; pixelation is not noticeable. The level of maximum brightness has increased, making the phone more comfortable to use in direct sunlight. The matrix has maximum viewing angles; color distortion is not observed.

Super AMOLED has the advantage of high contrast, and you can feel the depth of the picture. And, of course, perfect black light. As before, various color modes are available: “Dynamic”, “Standard”, “Professional Photography” and “Cinema”.

Battery

The battery capacity compared to the Galaxy S4 has increased from 2600 mAh to 2800 mAh. This is enough for comfortable use during the working day. There are interesting innovations in energy saving. An Ultra Power Saving mode has appeared; in this mode, the smartphone switches the display to black and white mode.

We checked the difference in results in the synthetic Antutu Tester test, there is a difference, but with a loaded processor it is not so big.

But it is worth mentioning that this mode, when the communication modules are completely turned off, can allow a noticeable amount of time to last until complete discharge.

Camera

Samsung Galaxy S5 uses ISOCELL photo sensor technology. This technology consists of having a barrier between adjacent pixels, increasing the number of photons received, as well as reducing interference between pixels.

The smartphone has a 16-megapixel camera with UHD shooting capabilities. In addition to updating the module, the software component has also changed noticeably. It feels like focusing has become faster compared to Note 3, and the night shooting mode has improved.

Now you need to expand the set of shooting modes yourself; by default, the list is reduced to several modes. The detail of the images is high, the automatic mode copes with most tasks. HDR mode now allows you to select and change the desired area in the image.

Connection

Supported: NFC, LTE, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11ac. Download Booster technology has appeared, combining Wi-Fi and LTE channels to send large files.

A plus was the appearance of LTE support. The radio module works perfectly, no failures or problems with signal reception have been recorded.

Software

To be honest, following the news about the dismissal of the head responsible for smartphone design, I expected the next news to be similar news, but for the department responsible for software. For a long time, the manufacturer continued to use a “cartoon” design style with excessive colorfulness.

Samsung Galaxy S5 runs on Google Android 4.4 operating system with updated Touch Wiz. The changes were right: the pseudo-volume of the icons disappeared, new animation and effects appeared. Unfortunately, the colorfulness is still preserved.

The settings interface has noticeably changed; instead of several tabs, there is now one, divided into separate zones.

Pre-installed applications have been updated, most noticeably in S Health 3.0.

Improved Knox functionality. This option allows you to consider this model in the corporate segment to protect important data.
