With the purchase of Mathsoft by PTC, marketing also changed. Not everyone needs the full version of the program. Therefore, it was decided to split MathCad into different packages. It is possible to download the most lightweight and stripped-down version of Matkad for free. Next comes the division into an individual version, a multi-user version and a special educational version, which comes at a very reduced price and does not require certain confirmations and requests from educational institutions.

A special web interface has also been developed for which you do not need to purchase or install the program itself. However, this will not be superfluous, since with a purchased license the web interface provides a higher level of access.

Need version smaller in size and which can be launched from any media?

The portable version of MathCad does not require installation, you can use it on any device, run the project immediately from a flash drive or other storage media. The Russian-language interface allows you to quickly master the program.

First of all, I welcome the first visitors to my blog. This is my first article on Habré and I hope that I can tell you a lot of useful things here.

RTS Mathcad is a typical example of mathematical software designed to carry out both numerical and analytical calculations using formulas and visualize their results in the form of graphs. For recent years Mathcad has become very popular, and, in my opinion, it can rightfully be considered the number 1 mathematical package in the world.

First, a few facts about Mathcad, of course, known to most readers, because... We have been using Mathcad for decades in university education, scientific and engineering calculations. Most likely, you used the “old” version of Mathcad (the latest one is number 15), which has changed little since the last century. Nowadays, it quite successfully coexists with the younger Mathcad family, which goes by the name Mathcad Prime. Thus, the developers completely rewrote the program code several years ago, but did not care about 100% compatibility. Therefore, now they safely support both families - both the “old” Mathcad and the “new” Mathcad Prime. Further, both in this article and in my blog, we will talk specifically about Mathcad Prime.

I’ll say right away that you can download the Russian-language distribution, a fully functional 30-day version of Mathcad Prime from the website of the Russian reseller RTS. If you are already planning to try it out, my advice is to take your time in the Setup Wizard to agree to enable a 30-day test period. The fact is that Mathcad Prime, along with the powerful full-featured version (the window of which you see above), has a free limited version called Mathcad Express. The peculiarity of Mathcad Express is that most of the functions in this version are disabled and are inaccessible. However, in Mathcad program Express remains quite rich in functionality, sufficient for at least, in order to study mathematics at school and in the 1st year of a technical university.

Formulas can be entered into documents either from the keyboard (if there are suitable symbols on it) or using the menu Mathematics. For the sake of an example, let's calculate the integral of the function cos(x). To do this, select the integral symbol, and then enter (from the keyboard) the limits of integration and the integrand function cos(x) into the appropriate placeholders. All you have to do is press the “equals” key to immediately get the answer.

We need to have a good idea of ​​what happens when we introduce the equal sign. Namely, the corresponding numerical algorithm for calculating the integral is launched: the integration interval is divided into a certain number of segments, at certain points of which an array of values ​​is calculated integrand function, which is then recalculated into the corresponding approximation of the integral sum. Thus, most of the calculations are hidden and happen behind the scenes, and only the final result is displayed on the screen.

The key tools of Mathcad are operators and functions. For example, in our calculations we used the integration operator and the cosine function. It is convenient to use the menu to select the desired built-in function Functions.

Let's now define custom function f(t), which will depend on the variable t. We will use the assignment operator intended for this in Mathcad (colon with an equal sign).

We defined the function f(t) as our integral of cos(x) with a variable upper limit t. After we have defined the function f(t), we can calculate its values ​​in points (to do this, just enter an argument and press the “equals” key to display the answer in the document). To enter a constant, such as π, use the or menu Symbols, or menu Constants.

You can use not only a scalar, but also a vector variable as an argument. It can be defined like this:

Then the result of calculating the function will be the corresponding vector.

Finally, one of the important features of Mathcad Express is the ability to create graphs in the document. Let's select a place in the document and insert an XY graph (i.e. Cartesian graph) of our function f(x) into this place.

We denote on the abscissa axis the name of the variable z (so as not to confuse it with the previously used x and t), and on the ordinate axis the name of the function f(z), a function that, as you remember, we defined as the integral of the cosine, equal to finitely , sin(z). As a result, we get a graph of this function.

I will also say that in Mathcad Express (perhaps due to an oversight by the developer) matrix operations remain available. Therefore Mathcad Express is quite powerful tool for solving linear algebra problems.

By moving up and down through the document, we can view our calculations, and we can manage them using the menu Calculation. By default, the automatic calculation option is enabled (as you enter formulas into the document, these formulas are immediately calculated). If this option is disabled, then in order to calculate the document manually, just press the button Calculate.

Let me stop here, believing that the task of introducing the reader to Mathcad Express has been solved, and in the following blog articles, when we'll talk, actually, about mathematics, I will be able to use calculations in Mathcad without delving into its interface.

PS. To my surprise, having encountered several negative comments, I will also note several shortcomings of Mathcad (again, from my point of view):

  • only Windows version available
  • resource-intensive, works slower than “previous” Mathcad
  • the interface could be more convenient
  • You cannot save a document in the previous version (for example, from the 3rd version in the 2nd format)
  • documents from “past” Mathcad cannot always be imported into Prime
