Positioning

The device was announced in April of this year, the official announcement in Russia took place just the other day in June. I think it should be clear from the name of the smartphone that the P8 Lite is a slightly simplified version of the flagship Huawei P8.

What has changed compared to the sophisticated P8? The body is no longer metal, it is now completely plastic. The processor is different, there is less RAM, the battery has depleted to 2200 mAh, although the case has become almost 1.5 mm thicker. The four-color RGBW sensor from Sony was removed from the camera (why don’t they themselves use such cool modules?) and optical stabilization. There are other minor changes.

The positioning is very simple: to provide an opportunity to buy a copy of the flagship P8 model with simplified parameters and almost the same appearance at a much lower price. Let me remind you that the older model will cost about 30,000 rubles, and the younger one can already be purchased from 15,000 rubles (RRP – 18,000 rubles).

Design, dimensions, control elements

I won’t be original if I repeat again that Huawei P8 Lite, in terms of appearance, repeats the design of Huawei P8. True, there is one exception: the younger model is made entirely of plastic: the back panel, the top insert on the back of the device and the side edges. The device looks interesting in pictures and photos, but in real life, unfortunately, not very much. When you pick it up, you feel that the body is made very simply, the plastic is ordinary, nothing special. On the reverse side, the device simultaneously resembles both the iPhone 5 and the ZTE Grand X. In general, the design is not that secondary, but we have already gone through all this. And yet, for a simplified version, P8 still looks good.

The P8 Lite smartphone is available in two colors: white and black. In my subjective opinion, it is better to take a closer look at the white one, since it looks more noble, and there are fewer fingerprints on the plastic insert on the back side. The dark-colored gadget looks a little more primitive. But this is my opinion, I like light-colored devices.

The surface of the rear panel is embossed: transverse grooves reminiscent of roughly polished metal. The edges of the plastic are matte and smooth. There is a silver frame around the perimeter. It is also made of plastic, “pretending” to be metal. But the power and volume buttons don't have to pretend - they really are metal.

In general, the materials are quite practical. During operation, the device remained intact and unharmed: no scratches, no chips, no abrasions. However, I think the back will wear off over time. The build is excellent, no complaints.

The dimensions of the P8 Lite are 141x70.6x7.7 mm, and the device weighs 131 grams. Thin and light, fits comfortably in the hand, does not slip out, but the gadget does not cause a special wow effect.

The front side is protected by glass. The official website does not say what kind of material it is. The P8 definitely uses Gorilla Glass. The surface of the P8 Lite screen has an oleophobic coating, the finger glides smoothly, without jerking. Fingerprints are not too noticeable and erase quickly.

At the top center there is a small slot where the speech speaker is hidden, covered with a black metal mesh. The speaker volume is slightly above average; you can mostly hear the mids and lows, perhaps with a little lack of highs. The timbre is slightly mumbling, the interlocutor can be heard clearly and relatively intelligibly. The proximity sensor did not play around during conversations.

To the right of the speaker is the front camera. On the left is an indicator of missed events. Light and proximity sensors are located nearby.

The buttons are on-screen, under the display there is the inscription “HUAWEI”.

At the bottom there are: a microphone (5 holes on the right), micro-USB and a speakerphone (5 holes on the left).

At the top is a second microphone and a 3.5 mm audio output for headphones. There are no elements on the left side of the device.

The volume rocker key (thin, relatively short, pleasant to use) and the power button (small, slightly extended above the body, with a soft move) are located on the right side.

Just below are two metal slots. A microSIM is installed in the bottom one, and a nanoSIM or microSD memory card is installed in the top one. Nowadays it has become fashionable to do just this: either two SIM cards, or one, but there is a slot for the card.

On the reverse side there is a module recessed into the body and a single-section flash.

Display

This device uses a screen with a diagonal of 5 inches. Physical size – 110.7x62.3 mm, frame on top – 16 mm, bottom – 16.5 mm, right and left – approximately 4 mm. There is an anti-reflective coating that is effective.

The display resolution of Huawei P8 Lite is HD, that is, 1280x720 pixels, aspect ratio is 16:9, density is 293 pixels per inch. IPS matrix without air gap.

The maximum brightness of white color is 190 cd/m2, the maximum brightness of black color is 0.4 cd/m2. Contrast ratio – 474:1.

The white line is the goal we are trying to achieve. The yellow line is the actual screen data. You can see that we are directly on the target curve, meaning that for every value between 0 and 100 the image is bright enough. The yellow line is the actual average amount of red, green and blue.

The average gamma value is 2.13.

Judging by the levels graph, there is a clear excess of blue and a lack of red (at maximum brightness it drops to 80%)

The temperature from 0 to 100 is almost the same - 7500 K.

Judging by the diagram, the data obtained does not quite correspond to the sRGB triangle. It is quite strongly shifted upward to the right.

Viewing angles are average; on the right we will see a more yellow picture, and on the left – purple.

If you don’t go into details, then this is an extremely budget matrix with low brightness, contrast, and color rendition.

Battery

This model uses a non-removable lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery with a capacity of 2200 mAh. The manufacturer does not provide data on autonomy. Actually, it’s clear why...

Unfortunately, you won’t get outstanding battery life from the Huawei P8 Lite; the manufacturer even artificially reduced the backlight brightness so that the battery drains less. I was able to “use” the gadget from 9:00 to 17:00 with LTE turned on, background processes (mail, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp) and infrequent calls.

Theoretically, you can squeeze out a day of work, but then you will have to switch to 3G and surf the net less.

Communication capabilities

The device works not only in 2G/3G networks (GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, WCDMA 900/2100 MHz), but also 4G CAT 4 (FDD: Band 3, 7, 8 20).

LTE and 3G network support both slots. Everything else is typical for any inexpensive Android smartphone: Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 2.0 with OTG function, GPS, GLONASS and NFC chip.

Memory and memory card

The developers did not skimp on RAM, so in this model you can find 2 GB of RAM. On average, approximately 1.1 GB is free.

There is 16 GB of internal memory, but only 10 GB is available to the user. There is a slot for a microSD memory card. The maximum volume is 32 GB.

Cameras

The main module is 13 MP (F2.0 aperture, 27 mm angle), the front module is 5 MP (F2.4 aperture, very wide angle 22 mm). It seems to me that there are exactly the same camera modules here as on the Huawei 4X, at least the parameters are the same, the “pattern” of the frame is similar. Perhaps they did a little magic on the software.

Let me remind you that the P8 has a four-color RGBW sensor from Sony and optical stabilization. Having looked at the footage from the older model, I can say that she doesn’t shoot much better than the younger one. Yes, there are small differences: a little sharper, a little nicer colors, a little brighter picture. However, it is almost impossible to determine by eye where the frame is from the P8 and where from the P8 Lite. And that's good for the latter.

Focus is fast, fairly accurate, and white balance is rarely wrong. There are several modes in the settings: selecting the focus point after taking the frame, “successful photo” – selecting the best shot after a series of frames, HDR, “photoshop” (that’s what I called it) – corrects the oval of the face, smoothes out wrinkles, etc.

The front camera shoots well, but in low lighting conditions it makes a terrible noise.

The video is unremarkable: FullHD at 30 frames per second. The image is good, but nothing more.

Performance

Last December, Huawei announced the 64-bit Kirin 620 platform with eight processor cores. The configuration of this solution includes eight Cortex-A53 processor cores (28 nm process technology) with a frequency of up to 1.2 GHz and a Mali-T450 MP4 GPU.

If we talk about the speed of the user interface animation, then there are no problems with it: it is smooth, fast, and there are no microlags.

When it comes to performance in games, things are not so clear. Of course, most games run fine, but there are applications in which the number of frames decreases quite noticeably, and some effects disappear.

Brief information and performance tests

Huawei P8 Lite 2017 is a completely new smartphone, so it should not be confused with the original P8 Lite, introduced in 2015. The new product has a different design, SoC, memory capacity, camera matrix and even display size.

Huawei P8 Lite 2017 is a mid-budget solution based on HiSilicon Kirin 655, equipped with 3 or 4 GB of RAM, as well as a 12 MP camera with a sensor like the older Huawei P9 model. The icing on the cake is Android 7.0 and EMUI 5.0 out of the box.

Appearance and ease of use

There is nothing extraordinary in the design of the smartphone's body, but it looks great. The front and back surfaces are made of glass with a 2.5D effect, and on the sides there is a plastic insert, the surface of which resembles rough-polished aluminum. The silver paint adheres extremely tenaciously to the plastic surface, so when used without a case, it will not peel off, as is the case with the side aluminum inserts on the personal Xiaomi Mi5. According to the manufacturer, the glass of the case is not simple, but Corning Gorilla Glass 3. But if at the front, after one and a half months of use by journalists, scratches on the glass did not appear, then at the back, at certain angles and in bright lighting, abrasions are still noticeable. However, on the white version that was tested, minor damage is extremely difficult to notice. It is also difficult to notice fingerprints, even though the body collects them at great speed. Surprisingly, both glasses do not have an oleophobic coating. And if the white and gold modifications suffer less from this, then the black one, apparently, is still a mess. By the way, the twin, the Huawei Honor 8 Lite 2017 model, which was officially introduced much later, is also available in a blue modification. The build quality of the smartphone is high, and the only thing I can complain about is the volume control rocker key, which rattles slightly when lightly tapping the body.

In front, under the display, only the manufacturer’s company logo is visible, and in the upper part there is a speaker, a light/proximity sensor and a front camera.

On the back there is a main camera, an LED flash and a round fingerprint sensor. The sensor is slightly recessed into the body and highlighted by a decorative aluminum ring. Traditionally, for Huawei smartphones, a fingerprint sensor allows you to control some functions of the smartphone. For example, you can use it to pull out the information curtain, take a photo, scroll through captured photos, answer incoming calls, and turn off the alarm clock. The sensor is extremely sensitive, so during the testing period there was not a single incorrect response.

On the left side surface, only a hybrid tray for installing SIM cards and a MiroSD memory card is visible. The tray allows you to install either 2 SIM cards or 1 SIM card and a memory card. And if for the 32 GB version (and 64 GB in the case of the twin Honor 8 Lite 2017) this is not so bad, then for the version with 16 GB of onboard memory this can become a small, but still a problem. On the right are the volume and power control keys.

At the top end you can see a microphone and a 3.5 mm mini-jack analog audio jack. Two decorative grilles are noticeable from below, but the system speaker is only under one of them. A microUSB connector is installed between the grilles. The latter is a little disappointing, because it’s 2017, so I would like to have USB Type-C in my arsenal, even USB 2.0, if only I could connect the cable without looking.

Software

I usually pay little attention to this point, if at all. After all, firstly, the user can change a lot of the software, including the shell, if desired, and secondly, the software within the model range of one manufacturer often rarely differs from device to device. But in the case of Huawei P8 Lite 2017, it’s worth paying attention to the software, because unlike the co-platform one (aka Mate 9 Lite and Honor 6x), the experimental one can boast of having Android 7.0 and EMUI 5.0 out of the box.

The first difference that catches your eye is the new curtain, which now consists of one tab, like in stock Android 7. Of course, personal preferences are important here, but personally I find this approach more convenient. The color scheme was changed to blue and white, which is more pleasant from a subjective point of view. It is also possible to activate a standard desktop display layout with a dedicated application menu, whereas in earlier EMUI shells all application icons and widgets were displayed on the desktop. In addition, in any settings item you can call up a scrollable menu with all top-level menu items. The manufacturer focuses on the fact that now most actions can be done in 2-3 clicks, which in general seems to be true.

Display

The smartphone has a 5.2-inch matrix. From a subjective point of view, this diagonal seems to be the most optimal solution. You can handle your smartphone with one hand, and reading web pages is quite convenient. In games, of course, a 5.5-5.7-inch diagonal is preferable, but the tested smartphone does not pretend to be a gaming laurel. The resolution of the IPS matrix, made using OGS technology, is typical for a modern middle-class smartphone - 1920x1080 pixels. There is also support for up to 10 simultaneous touches. But there is no oleophobic coating. In theory, the situation can be corrected with expensive protective glass, but on glass with a 2.5D effect this design will look poor (from a subjective point of view, of course).

The display is quite bright and contrasty. At maximum backlight brightness, the maximum luminosity is 537.6 cd/m2, and the minimum is 0.49 cd/m2, which gives a final static contrast of 1097:1, and this is a very good result. In addition, the display is easy to read in direct sunlight (assuming there are no fingerprints), and the colors fade only slightly when viewed from an angle. Adaptive backlight brightness adjustment works correctly, and during the testing period the need for manual adjustment never arose.

Image adjustment comes down to manually adjusting the color temperature and activating the “eye protection” mode, which sharply reduces the color temperature, which is convenient for long reading. Measurements were taken in default display mode. The deviation of Delta E for the primary colors RGBCMY is in the range of 1.3-3.6, which is a very good indicator, because the human eye is unable to detect a deviation of less than 3.0. The color gamut is only slightly different from the standard sRGB color space. In the “default” mode, the color temperature, depending on the luminosity, ranges from 6809-7095 K, which is a relatively small deviation from the reference value of 6500 K.

Sound

The earpiece is quite loud, and the sound is clear. The microphone is quite good: the interlocutor can hear speech perfectly well during a telephone conversation, even if the user of the tested smartphone is located next to a noisy multi-lane avenue. The interlocutor has minor complaints only about the wind noise. The system speaker also pleasantly pleased with the sound quality, but the volume was average. When playing a sinusoidal signal with a frequency of 1 kHz, the noise level recorded at a distance of 1 m from the smartphone was 75.1 dBA. But on the other hand, even when setting the maximum volume level, the speaker does not choke, and in general, no serious defects appear.

At the analog output, the volume depends on many factors, ranging from impedance to the type of design of the headphones and the dynamic drivers themselves. We do not have the opportunity to check the operation in all possible combinations with different types of headphones, so we will limit ourselves to measuring the voltage level when reproducing a sinusoidal signal with a frequency of 1 kHz and operating at a load of 32 Ohms. The result, frankly speaking, was disappointing - only 136.1 mV. In general, headphones with an impedance of more than 22-24 Ohms are simply contraindicated for this smartphone. As for the sound quality, everything is not bad here. When tested in the Right Mark Audio Analyzer 6 package using the Creative E-MU 0204 USB external audio interface, the smartphone received a final rating of “very good.”

Performance

The smartphone is based on the HiSilicon Kirin 655 SoC, which is produced using the 16 nm FinFET Plus process technology. This is an 8-core solution in which 4 Cortex-A53 cores operate at a frequency of 2.1 GHz, and another 4 cores based on the same architecture, but with a frequency of up to 1.7 GHz. The video subsystem is based on Mali-T830MP2.

The tested smartphone comes in two versions - 3 GB RAM and 16 GB ROM, as well as 4 GB RAM and 32 GB ROM. The younger modification was tested. The twin brother, Huawei Honor 8 Lite, also exists in versions with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of ROM, as well as in a 4/64 GB version. However, regardless of the amount of RAM, the type is always the same - LPDDR3 933 MHz.

System performance was measured using synthetic PCMark, 3DMark, Geekbanch 4 and AnTuTu v6. Memory speed was assessed using the AndroBench application.

Testing was also carried out in cross-platform javascript tests (Mozilla Kraken JavaScript and SunSpider). The results of these tests significantly depend on the browser used, therefore, to minimize the impact, Google Chrome will be used in all reviews, as the most common one.

Camera

Almost all Huawei smartphones use Sony-made matrices. Only two exceptions come to mind - this is the Huawei Honor Holly, equipped with a Samsung matrix, as well as the original Huawei P8 Lite 2015, which has an OmniVision OV13850 matrix. But our test subject has a Sony matrix installed. Unfortunately, the sensor model is not stated in the specifications. But I will still assume that the Sony Exmor RS IMX286 matrix is used. This is a 1/2.9-inch sensor with a physical pixel size of 1.25 microns. Sony doesn't have many modern 12 MP sensors. The IMX260 model is exclusive to Samsung, IMX386 is exclusive to Meizu, there is also IMX378 without a touch of exclusivity, but it is used in expensive products Xiaomi Mi5s, HTC U Ultra and Google Pixel (XL), so its use in a relatively inexpensive smartphone is unlikely. As a result, only IMX286 remains. In addition, the IMX286 sensor is used in almost all modern Huawei smartphones with a 12 MP camera.

In the specifications, only the f/2.2 aperture is disappointing, while most competitors use an f/2.0 lens. But don’t forget that the same Huawei P9 with Leica optics has the same aperture number. The flash was also disappointing, because it is not two-color, and consists of only one LED, which at a distance of a meter provides rather poor illumination at 18.1 lux. For comparison, the similarly priced Moto M showed a result of 35.0 lux under the same conditions.

The settings provide for operation in both automatic and manual mode. The mode menu is called up by swiping from left to right, and the camera system settings menu is called up by swiping in the opposite direction. It’s worth noting right away that the HDR mode cannot be activated in the main shooting window, and it is only available in the mode menu. In addition, it cannot be activated automatically, which is not always convenient for everyday use. Another disadvantage is the self-timer, which is hidden in the camera’s system settings and is not displayed in the main window. There are 4 shutter release methods available - a virtual shutter key, a fingerprint sensor, a volume key, and a smile detection mode, which is convenient when taking selfies. Phase autofocus, there is no newfangled laser focusing, but nevertheless the camera focuses very quickly and accurately even in low light conditions.

When the “professional photo” mode is activated, control of the following parameters becomes available: selecting an exposure metering mode, selecting a sensitivity level (in the ISO 100...1600 range in steps of 1/3 EV), setting the shutter speed (1/4000...8 seconds), introducing exposure compensation, selecting the focus operating mode, as well as selecting the white balance setting.

The smartphone supports full transfer of camera control to third-party software, in addition, the RAW format is supported. When using third-party software, the sensitivity range is wider - from 50 to 3200 units in ISO equivalent.

To evaluate image quality, a test pattern was captured with all available sensitivity values. Below are cropped fragments.

The method for assessing camera noise in numerical terms can be found in the review. This review contains only a graph with measurement results. As you can see, the results are very worthy. The slightly more expensive Huawei GR5 2017 lags behind in terms of signal-to-noise ratio across the entire sensitivity range from 2.1 dB to 4.1 dB. This may indicate the use of a Sony Exmor RS IMX286 matrix, which is also equipped in the 2016 flagship Huawei P9.

We haven’t had Huawei smartphones in our “Laboratory” for a long time, although several interesting models were released in 2015, including an update to the flagship series, which it would be wrong to ignore, but let’s look at it in a lighter version - Huawei P8 Lite. It was presented immediately after the flagship; previously such versions were available in a separate G series. This is a kind of experience of dividing one line into different versions; this approach is used by some market leaders.

It was also released in a version with an increased screen diagonal P8 Max. The Huawei P8 Lite tested today at the current price level looks more interesting than its older brother P8. At the time of testing, the average cost, according to the Yandex.Market service, is 18,000 rubles. Gearbest online store offers an opportunity to save money, here Huawei P8 Lite costs $199, It came to our editorial office without the original packaging.

Video review of Huawei P8 Lite

Appearance

Huawei P8 Lite is made in the same style as the flagship. The “P” line of this manufacturer is an image line; special attention has always been paid to appearance. The reduced price tag did not cause the abandonment of this approach. This model looks impressive and is available in black and white.

The overall dimensions of the case are 70.6x143x7.7 mm and weighs 130 grams. The smartphone fits comfortably in your hands without slipping.

They did not use glass here, and this turned out to be correct: the problem with contamination and fingerprints during active use was solved. And overall practicality has increased.

Instead of a metal lid, plastic with spraying and a textured coating is used. The quality of materials and assembly is at a high level, nothing creaks or plays.

The side face with rounded edges is stylized as metal; it completely encircles the body in a closed contour. The left side was engraved with a serial number: not the best solution - dirt gets clogged here.

The Huawei P8 Lite case is non-separable. SIM and memory card are installed in a sliding slide. To access them you will need the supplied key or paperclip. Unfortunately, as with previous models, engineers offer a choice of SIM+SIM or SIM+microSD.

Both slides are on the right side, there is also a power button and a volume rocker. They are stylized as metal and are located blindly.

At the bottom is a paired speaker and microphone grille with round holes, separated by microUSB. This smartphone does not support OTG. One more solution.

An audio jack and an additional noise-canceling microphone were placed on the top edge of the Huawei P8 Lite.

The front side of the smartphone is covered with Gorilla Glass 3 with a small edging along the side edge. The top frame includes proximity and light sensors, a front camera lens, and an LED indicator. At the bottom there is only the Huawei logo. The lower buttons have been moved to the interface, taking away useful space from applications.

The main camera and LED flash are in a separate area on the back cover. Below is the manufacturer's logo.

Screen

An IPS matrix with a diagonal of 5 inches with HD resolution (1280 by 720) and pixel density of 294 ppi is installed. Up to 10 simultaneous touches are processed. There is an anti-reflective filter; there is no air gap between the protective glass and the matrix. The maximum brightness level is high, the image remains legible in direct sunlight.

The backlight can be adjusted either manually or automatically. The advantages include maximum viewing angles, uniform illumination and good color balance settings. In the settings, you can shift to warm or cool tones.

Filling

The heart of Huawei P8 Lite is the eight-core HiSilicon Kirin 620 single-chip processor, this is our own development. 64-bit architecture with Cortex-A53 cores and Mali-T450MP4 graphics. The performance level is similar to MediaTek MT6752 and Snapdragon 615.

2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory are available, of which 10 GB is available to the user. The performance level is sufficient for smooth operation of the interface and launching a 3D game. During load, the maximum heating temperature of the back cover does not exceed 44 degrees.

Battery

A 2200 mAh battery is responsible for the autonomous operation of the Huawei P8 Lite - modest by modern standards. There is no need to expect any autonomy records here. In a normal scenario, you can go through an entire workday without needing to charge; active work will require one or two additional charges during the day. At maximum load, discharge takes place in 3 hours. Playing movies - for 6 hours, reading - 10 hours. On long trips it would be a good idea to take a PowerBank.

Connection

Huawei P8 Lite supports LTE networks, including Russian frequencies. There are Bluetooth 4.0 modules, single-band Wi-Fi, NFC with Huawei Beam data exchange technology. The navigation module uses a joint GPS and Russian GLONASS signal. The satellite search speed is high, the connection is stable.

Media

Huawei P8 Lite has only one speaker. The volume level is high, the sound is pleasant to the ear. There are no complaints about the conversational speaker. Users have access to FM radio, which only works when a headset is connected.

Camera

The main camera module of the Huawei P8 Lite has a resolution of 13 megapixels, f/2.0 aperture. It uses its own application with manual settings for improving the quality of pictures, removing defects from the face, and shooting modes. There is a remote start with activation from smiles and voices. The user can save individual filter settings to improve the quality of selfies. Front camera with a resolution of 5 megapixels, f/2.4 aperture. The image quality is acceptable, autofocus is fast. The video is shot in Full HD resolution.

Software

At the time of testing, the Google Android 5.0.1 operating system with the Emotion UI 3.1 shell was installed. Updates to 5.1 and 6.0 were not released; whether they will be released in 2016 is an open question.

We got acquainted with this shell earlier. We looked at it in more detail in the video review of this smartphone. There are no particular complaints about it; it works smoothly, offering users the ability to customize.

One of the features worth noting is the absence of a separate window for applications; icons are displayed directly on the desktop. Gestures are supported. There is a quick access panel to frequently used functions.

Results on Huawei P8 Lite

Huawei P8 Lite is a good option for those who are looking for a stylish smartphone with an adequate set of characteristics, but are not ready to overpay for the title of flagship. The strengths include a 64-bit processor, IPS HD screen, nice design, excellent build, 13-megapixel camera, NFC, LTE. You will have to put up with the lack of support for a second SIM when installing a memory card, low battery capacity, lack of OTG and updates to the latest version of Android.

Huawei P8 Lite can be called compact - in terms of dimensions it almost repeats last year's Huawei Honor 6: 143 × 70.6 × 8 mm. The smartphone fits comfortably in one hand, and in order not to resort to the help of the second, in the settings you can select a special control mode, in which the image is reduced by about an inch. Huawei P8 Lite is thicker than most designer or high-end models, but weighs a little - 133 grams.

As for the appearance, the smartphone received the design from its older brother, but it looks budget-friendly. To be honest, we expected it to look more premium in real life, at least in advertising catalogs it looked more attractive. Even the case material turned out to be budget-friendly - plastic instead of metal. The same frames at the ends are actually also made of plastic, although they look like roughly processed metal. A graphic design is applied to the back panel, which allows you to quickly identify the smartphone. As a plus, we note the rather thin side frames around the display (screen area - 68.3%). At the bottom end there is a Micro-USB connector and speaker holes (in fact, the sound comes from only one of them, and a microphone is most likely hidden in the second).

The build quality is, in our opinion, good. The case does not bend, and during two weeks of testing it did not wear out or get scratched. Although it is not metal, the chosen material turned out to be quite practical. The case is non-separable, the SIM and MicroSD card slots are located in trays, which have to be removed using a special key or paperclip. Huawei P8 Lite can be purchased in black (Black) and white (White) colors.

Screen - 4.4

The display of the smartphone is of average quality, but moderately clear, bright and with its own small “tricks”.

The screen received HD resolution (1280×720 pixels). This is a typical and fairly clear (pixel density - 294 per inch) option for a 5-inch diagonal. Viewing angles can be assessed as average, as well as maximum brightness - 379 cd/m2. As a result, reading the screen is a little difficult in sunny weather. The minimum luminosity was again average - about 11 cd/m2. It's quite comfortable for reading in the dark. We would also like to mention auto-brightness, which can be smoothly adjusted; it works adequately under lighting conditions. As “tricks” we will name the operating mode with gloves (even quite thick leather ones) and color temperature adjustment (with a scale from “hot” to “cold”).

Not the highest brightness, average contrast and lack of protective glass - all this makes the Huawei P8 Lite screen mediocre for its price.

Camera

The smartphone has two average quality cameras of 13 and 5 MP. They are about the same quality as in the budget Huawei Honor 4C.

Both Huawei P8 Lite cameras can shoot with a retouching effect (“Decoration”) and so-called time lapses. This is something like “live photos” on the new iPhone 6s or just a short video. The main camera is equipped with an HDR mode, which improves the detail of dark areas in the frame. In addition, there is a mode with focus on different zones - most likely, the smartphone takes several photos with different focusing in order to then select the most suitable option. The rest of the modes are quite typical: detecting smiles, taking panoramas, adjusting several settings. But who today doesn’t know how to do all this? Except that not everyone has the ability to shoot panoramas with a front camera yet.

The smartphone does not have an RGBW sensor or an optical stabilization system, like its older brother. Despite the use of back-illumination (BSI) technology, night photography on the Huawei P8 Lite was not impressive. It’s not that the camera takes bad pictures, but what’s more disappointing is that it’s not much different from the camera on the Honor 4C, which costs almost half the price. The quality of the photo turned out to be about the same - Huawei P8 Lite focuses well and works well with light, but the detail of small objects in the frame sometimes suffers, and noise also appears periodically in the photo.

Working with text - 5.0

The smartphone comes pre-installed with two keyboards to choose from: the proprietary Huawei Swype and the standard one from Google.

The first allows for text input using strokes (Swype); there is also marking of additional characters. If you wish, you can select a standard Android keyboard in the input settings, although the proprietary one, in our opinion, is still more convenient. Unless switching between languages occurs by pressing the space bar and swiping up, and not by a separate key.

Internet - 3.0

The Huawei P8 Lite smartphone tries to please with all the number of pre-installed browsers: there is Chrome, Opera, and even its own “Browser”. With the first two, everything is clear, they are widespread: Opera has its own traffic compression mode, express panel and auto-fit text to the width of the screen, and Chrome is able to synchronize with the desktop version of the program. Its own browser turned out to be no less interesting and functional: it is possible to save pages for offline reading, send links in various ways, and even an advertising filter.

Communications - 3.8

Huawei P8 Lite received the usual set of wireless communications:

  • Wi-Fi b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP profile support and energy saving
  • LTE Cat. 4 (up to 150 Mbit/s)
  • A-GPS with GLONASS support
  • NFC chip.

But the mere presence of LTE today will not surprise anyone (besides, not the fastest Cat. 4 category). The only thing that reminds us of its relationship with flagships is the NFC chip.

The smartphone also does not have such features as high-speed and dual-band Wi-Fi. Even the Micro-USB connector does not support USB-Host, OTG (for connecting peripherals), or even MHL or Display Port (for video transmission).

Multimedia - 4.2

Huawei P8 Lite supports many different audio and video codecs. Thus, the smartphone plays uncompressed audio in the FLAC format, but cannot cope with the less popular DTS. As for video, the device played some of the 4K videos in tests, only failing to support the AVC codec. We also note that some MP4 videos were not played smoothly enough.

As for the pre-installed video player, it is simple and has almost no settings - just blocking, viewing in a small window and... that's it.

The music player is also not rich in functionality - there are only display settings (with a filter by song duration), selection of folders for search and display of song tests. All this is interesting, but many will miss the equalizer.

Battery - 2.6

The battery life of the Huawei P8 Lite turned out to be short. The main reason is the battery capacity, it is only 2200 mAh. Even the Honor 4C (although it is noticeably heavier) uses a 2550 mAh battery, and it lasts, although not much, but longer.

Huawei P8 Lite lasted 5.5 hours in HD video playback mode at maximum brightness - at the level of Acer Liquid Jade or ultra-thin Fly Tornado Slim. The results when playing music also turned out to be low - 42 hours, they can be called ordinary. In an hour of running the GeekBench Battery Test, the device lost 21% of charge, again, this is an average result.

During our tests, the smartphone lasted us about a day of work (a few games, a movie, mail, a browser and calls), we can consider this as payback for a light and relatively thin body.

Performance - 2.4

Huawei P8 Lite is equipped with a self-produced chipset with an average level of performance - it will be enough for daily tasks, but it may not be enough for demanding games.

At the same time, exactly the same HiSilicon Kirin 620 processor (8 cores at a frequency of up to 1.2 GHz) was used in Huawei Honor 4C, which is positioned as a budget model. Even the amount of RAM on both devices is the same - 2 GB. The smartphone works quite smoothly during daily use - calls, videos, applications, everything goes smoothly. Even most games run quite well: Minion Rush runs smoothly, and NOVA 3 loads quickly (in 12-15 seconds) and runs with almost no lag.

In benchmarks, Huawei P8 Lite received typically average scores:

  • in GeekBench 3 - 2,775 points (the program claims that it received 2,836 points)
  • in AnTuTu 5.7 - 35,952 (less than LG Nexus 5 2013)
  • in 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited - up to 5,556 (more than the Samsung Galaxy A3 with its 4,558 points).

As a result, we get a device with a mid-level “stuffing”, which, nevertheless, is sufficient for most modern smartphone tasks.

Memory - 4.0

The volume of permanent memory of Huawei P8 Lite is 16 GB, of which only 10.3 GB is available to the user. The volume is small, but the smartphone has a slot for a memory card. However, it is located in the same tray as the second SIM card, so you have to choose between additional communication and increased memory. Some applications can be transferred to a memory card.

Peculiarities

Huawei P8 Lite runs Android 5.0 Lollipop OS. Features include the proprietary Emotion 3.1 UI interface, NFC chip, non-separable body and support for two SIM cards. The smartphone has quite a wide range of options in terms of settings, a mode for working with gloves and various “tricks”, such as motion control (shaking, turning over and double taps). Like the Honor 4C, when the screen is turned off, you can draw one of four letters (c, e, w, m) to launch applications (you can assign them yourself).

Initially, Google services are pre-installed on the smartphone, a set of basic applications (Music, Gallery, and so on), as well as Phone Manager and Tools such as weather, radio, mirror and file manager.

Let's start with the good news. Huawei marketers have finally gotten rid of the completely unnecessary, rudimentary word Ascend in the names of their smartphones. It has outlived its usefulness - and that’s wonderful. Now the names of the Chinese company's smartphones sound succinct and concise. Compare for yourself which is better: Huawei Ascend P7 or Huawei P8/P8 Lite. The answer, in our opinion, is obvious: the shorter it is, the easier it is for everyone.

Now as for the new products from Huawei themselves. The first is a typical flagship. A large screen with Full HD resolution, a powerful eight-core processor, three gigabytes of RAM, support for advanced LTE standards, 13- and 8-megapixel cameras - this is not a complete list of the advantages of the Huawei P8. But we will talk about it in detail another time. Today we will talk about his younger brother -. It should be noted that Huawei has not previously spoiled us with various “mini” smartphones; this genre is new for the company. Therefore, it is very interesting to see how lumpy their first mini-pancake came out.

Judging by the technical specifications table, Huawei P8 Lite is in many ways inferior to its older brother. It looks like the engineers plucked off a piece (element) from the previous smartphones in the series, seasoned it with a new sauce (body) and served it to the table. The dish is ready, bon appetit! No, really, the combination of hardware is really strange - the smartphone has an HD-resolution display, an eight-core system-on-a-chip and a thirteen-megapixel camera. Let's try to figure out how all this coexists in one mid-price smartphone.

⇡ Appearance and ergonomics

And Huawei marketers with a sense of humor are doing very well! Otherwise, it’s difficult to explain how it was possible to attribute the word Lite (“light”) to the plumpest and one of the heaviest smartphones in the line? Seriously, the body thickness of the P8 Lite is 7.7 millimeters, although the thickness of all Huawei P series gadgets still on sale does not exceed seven millimeters, and the newest ones are rapidly approaching six. The device also weighs noticeably - 131 grams. True, using the P8 Lite with one hand is quite convenient - you don’t get tired of it.

Well, since we started to cut the truth, it’s worth saying that in the case of P8 Lite, the letter P in the name does not need to be deciphered as the pretentious Platinum. Be honest: here it obviously means Plastic. It is noteworthy that the body of the original P8 is made of metal.

The device looks, to be honest, quite standard. There is nothing for the eye to catch on; it does not have any remarkable finishing elements. At the top of the front panel there is a slot for the earpiece and the lens of the front five-megapixel camera, at the bottom there is a rather large empty area. The system navigation keys - “Back”, “Home” and “Menu of open applications” - are touch sensitive, they are located at the bottom of the screen. The thickness of the side frames around the display is standard - neither large nor small.

Along all the narrow edges of the case there is a silver edging, stylized as metal - admittedly, a rather hackneyed solution, because of which the device looks somewhat cheap. Although Huawei P8 Lite is not a cheap smartphone.

We have no comments regarding the ergonomics of the device. The power button and volume keys are on the right side, right under the thumb. The buttons have a short and distinct stroke; They are easy to use by touch. Next to them are slots for a Micro-SIM card and a universal connector for a SIM card or microSD flash drive. At the top end there is a headphone jack.

The Micro-USB 2.0 interface is located at the bottom end. Next to it are the slots for the external speaker. Its location is good - it does not overlap either during operation or when the smartphone is lying on the table.

The surface of the back panel of the device is rough, so it does not slip in your hands. At the top of the “back” there is the lens of the main thirteen-megapixel camera along with an LED flash.
