When Apple held a major event in September to announce its devices, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus were unveiled and attracted the most public attention. At the same time, new AirPods headphones and the Apple Watch Series 2 smart watch were announced. However, the announcements were not limited to this: the Apple Watch Series 1 was also presented.

This model is a replacement for the original Apple Watch, focusing on its performance and price. Apple Watch Series 1 runs on a dual-core processor similar to the Series 2 watch. There is no support for a waterproof case, but the price is much lower.

For those who do not want to spend a lot of money on the Apple Watch Series 2, but want to get acquainted with the concept of a smart watch and preferably from Apple, this review is written.

Scope of delivery

  • Apple Watch Series 1 (38 mm, gray aluminum with black band)
  • Straps sizes S/M and M/L
  • Magnetic charging device
  • AC power adapter
  • watchOS User Guide and Sport Band
  • Warranty and Safety Information

Design

The Series 1 and Series 2 watches are different in terms of design. Both models are similar in appearance, but the Series 2 watch can survive immersion in water to a depth of 50 m. This means that you can swim and shower in it, although the Series 1 watch also has IPX7 water protection. Apple doesn't recommend submerging them completely in water, but they can survive being exposed to rain.

In addition to not being fully water-resistant, the Series 1 is available in a more limited number of options than the Series 2. Only an aluminum case and a sport band are offered. If you want to buy a stainless steel Apple Watch with different band styles, you'll have to buy the Series 2. You can buy the bands separately and use them with your Watch Series 1.

Screen

Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 2 have the same screen resolution, but Series 2 has a higher maximum brightness. This parameter for the watch is 450 nits versus 1000 nits, but it is difficult to get into a situation in which the brightness of the Series 1 watch would not be enough.

You might pay an extra $100 for the Series 2 if the original Apple Watch's screen seemed too dim, but it's bright enough for most people.

Interface and functionality

Apple Watch Series 1 runs the latest version of watchOS, which delivers the same experience as the original Apple Watch and the new Watch Series 2.

One of the biggest changes in watchOS 3 is the replacement of Glances with a Dock that opens by pressing the oblong side button on the watch. This opens a list of applications the user has installed in the Dock, as well as a list of the most recently launched applications. You can swap applications in this list and customize the interface to your liking.

The new version of the operating system places a lot of emphasis on health and fitness. In addition to improvements to the Activity and Workouts apps, it's easier to access exercise data, new controls, and the ability to share data with friends. There's a new app called Breathe that encourages users to take breaks and relax as they go about their day. Along with reminders to get up and exercise, this shows Apple's commitment to keeping users healthy and well-being, but many will likely want to turn off these notifications as they are annoying and distracting.

Processor and memory

One of the significant improvements in the Apple Watch Series 1 over the original Apple Watch is the processor. It uses the same fast 2-core chip as in the Series 2 watch. The budget model has high performance. Compared to Series 2, there is no support for GPS module, which could be useful in fitness applications.

The operating system and apps run quickly and smoothly, which was not the case with the original Apple Watch. Sometimes the animation exhibits stuttering, but these minor cases do not spoil the impression. Navigating the interface, typing voice messages, and working with the Apple Pay payment system is fast.

Connection

As mentioned above, there is no built-in GPS module. It could be useful for lovers of swimming, running and cycling, showing the distance traveled and speed.

The watch's lack of GPS means you have to use your iPhone to analyze your distance traveled. Those who want this feature in a watch without a smartphone should buy the Apple Watch Series 2.

Conclusion

Considering all the differences between budget and high-end watches, should you buy the Series 1?

If their functionality is enough for you, then the answer will be yes. You need to remember about the lack of full water protection and GPS. But if you don't plan to swim or play sports, these features won't be useful to you.

The watch starts at $269 on Apple's website for the 38mm model. That's $100 cheaper than the Apple Watch Series 2. For that price, you get a full-fledged wrist-worn computer.

Pros

  • Lightweight and comfortable
  • High performance due to 2-core processor
  • High quality screen
  • Improved watchOS 3 operating system
  • $100 cheaper than Series 2 with about the same features

Cons

  • Screen brightness
  • No complete protection against water
  • No GPS
  • Battery life

Apple is constantly working to update its products. Today, buyers can purchase newer models of smart watches. The price for the earlier model has become slightly lower. This circumstance makes potential buyers think about whether it is worth purchasing a new product or whether they can buy an Apple Watch 1. A complete review of the characteristics of the early model will help make a decision.

The Series 1 model is equipped with a fast processor - S1P, it is dual-core. The watch is not equipped with full protection from moisture, a GPS module, and has a less bright display, unlike Series 2. The design of both series is identical in appearance. Series 2 is distinguished by the inscription on the back cover and the material of this cover. In the first model it is made of composite, in the second it is made of ceramics (glass). Series 1 is thinner, the dimensions are the same in other respects. The first model has a 38 mm thickness of 10.5 mm, the second one has the same diagonal of 11.4. But Apple Watch Series 1 42mm and Series 2 have the same thickness.

Such a slight difference is practically unnoticeable in practice. The weight of the first generation watches is 25 grams and 30, respectively for 38 mm and 42. The brightness of the watch’s screen is 450 nits. The screen is protected from scratches and damage by ionic glass. The processors in both generations of watches are dual-core. The second series is more powerful. The productivity of the gadget is higher; it makes more sense to buy a new model.

The Series 1 watch is splash-proof and water-resistant. The user easily washes his hands and does not remove the gadget, the device will not deteriorate. This version of the gadget only lacks a GPS module; the rest of the sensors are the same as the second generation. The user tracks heart rate, location in space, number of steps taken and floors climbed. Wireless communication is provided by Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

The capacity of the built-in battery is enough for 18 hours of battery life. In practice, this time varies depending on how actively the device is used. The watch case is made of silver metal - aluminum. The Retina screen is equipped with an OLED matrix. There is built-in Force Touch technology, which senses the force of pressing the display and, based on the received data, provides basic or additional options.

The brightness of the gadget's screen is adjusted automatically by a light sensor. The device has a Digital Crown button on the side; it is designed for scrolling and mechanical pressing. The gadget receives calls; to transmit the voice of the caller and the speaker, there is a speaker and microphone, which are located on the side. The operating system on which the gadget runs is watchOS 3. The device’s OS is stable.

Control

The OS has an intuitive interface. By swiping from top to bottom, the user accesses notifications. By swiping up from the bottom, the control center is called up. The main screensaver is easy to change. Hold your finger pressed in the middle of the splash screen and, scrolling from right to left and vice versa, select the one you need. Pressing the wheel button will take the user to the application menu. If you twist it, the contents of the screen will move from bottom to top or back.

One of the popular "activity" applications. Allows you to track the owner's activity throughout the day. The number of steps and distance traveled are counted. If you like to play sports while listening to music, then check out the “my music” program. In “offline” mode, the gadget can store up to 200 music tracks. When connected to the Internet, the device is synchronized with your cloud, and all the music will be “on hand”.

For active people, there is another interesting fitness application. Here the user selects a specific type of activity, and the gadget, depending on the type of sport, will collect information about the activity and compile a “progress” table. The calories expended by the user during active activities will also be counted.

This application is customized for a specific sport. For swimmers, it is recommended to consider the second generation of watches, they are completely waterproof. Allows diving up to 50 meters. You can swim in them both in the pool and in open water. To clean the gadget from water, there is a special function that must be activated immediately upon entering land. Moisture is expelled using vibration and sound.

Accessories and their availability

After the release of the second generation of smart watches from Apple, the price of the first models became lower. This is a good opportunity to buy a high-quality branded product at a more reasonable price. The user can diversify the appearance of the accessory by changing the strap. The strap fastening for both generations is the same, with magnets. Even when switching from one model to another, the owner will be able to use existing straps for both products.

Apple offers customers a wide selection of watch bezels, and they are easy to change. In addition to additional accessories for the gadget, the buyer can choose the package package to suit his taste when purchasing. There is a “sport” version, which, due to its general design, is suitable for people who prefer a sporty style of clothing. Straps for smart devices can be purchased not only original, but also from third-party manufacturers. Electronic stores are rich in similar products and their prices are reasonable.

Bottom line

The first and perhaps the only drawback of the gadget is that the hardware is “delicate”; accidental impacts cause scratches. Otherwise, there are no complaints about the product. The battery drains depending on active use, some watches will drain faster, while others will hold a charge longer. The manufacturer claims a battery life of up to 18 hours. The scale of icons in the application menu can be easily changed by moving the viewing point. This feature is especially useful if the user installs a large number of programs.

The device operates at high speed. The user can answer a call without taking the smartphone out of their pocket or in the car. Fitness applications monitor the owner’s activity and generate information based on progress. A watch is not only a mobile device, but also, first and foremost, a stylish accessory. It will add solidity and zest to the image.

The Apple Watch Series 2 smartwatch boasts water resistance and a GPS transmitter, but the Watch Series 1 attracts with an improved processor and a reduced price. Which model should you choose?

First, let's explain that Apple decided to upgrade the first generation of its smart watches, the Apple Watch. The updated version is called Apple Watch Series 1. In design and functions, it is no different from its original, but it costs much less and runs on a 2-core processor, like Series 2.

So is there any point in paying more if the Series 2 is essentially the Series 1 with GPS and water resistance? Or maybe it’s better to choose the first generation (sometimes also called Series 0)? Let's make a comparison.

Design and display

The new Apple Watch Series 2 is the same size as the first Apple Watch, but again with smaller and larger versions (38mm and 42mm). However, the Series 2 version with a ceramic case (pictured below) has tiny differences in thickness and length.

With the Series 2 smartwatch, Apple has once again opted for a square design, while many competitors, such as the Gear S3 or ZenWatch 3, have already come out with more traditional round watch faces. There is still a digital rotating crown on the side.
You can choose the Series 2 in aluminum, steel, or the new ceramic case, which Apple says is 4 times stronger than steel. In steel and ceramic cases, the dial is covered with sapphire crystal, and in the version with an aluminum case, ionized glass is used. By the way, it is lighter and 2.5 times stronger than sapphire (due to its flexibility), but less resistant to scratches, although it can pass the coin and key test.
In the first generation of Apple Watch there is no choice - only a steel case with sapphire crystal.

The Series 1 and Series 2 smartwatches feature almost identical OLED Retina displays. Just like the original, the Series 2 models have resolutions of 272x340 and 312x390 pixels (for the 38mm and 42mm versions, respectively), with a density of about 326 ppi. The main difference is that Apple Watch Series 2 uses a 2nd generation display that is 2 times brighter than the first generation Apple Watch display. That is, on the street the image on the Series 2 screen is visible much better. In addition, in Series 2, the display responds to pressure (Force Touch technology), which opens up even more possibilities for the user to work with applications.

The big advantage of the Series 2 smartwatch is its water resistance. They can withstand immersion to depths of up to 50 m. Apple has worked hard to ensure that you can swim without taking off your watch. Some even found it funny to watch the Series 2 "spit" through the speaker if water did leak inside the case. The drainage mechanism of smartwatches works in this unusual way. The Apple Watch Series 1 models only have modest splash protection.

The Series 1 and Series 2 have the same battery life at approximately 18 hours. The charging principle and battery type are also the same in both generations.

Functions

The Apple Watch Series 2 smartwatch received an improved processor in the form of a new 2-core Apple S2 chip, which is 50% more productive than the chip in the original Apple Watch. The new graphics processor performs 2 times better in games and applications. Apple says you can expect up to 60 frames per second, depending on the game. The Apple Watch Series 1 smartwatch also has a 2-core chip called S1P.

Both series of watches support watchOS 3. Apple says that the new version of the OS has improved sports functions, added additional dials, and added the ability to enter handwritten messages. In an emergency, you can use the new SOS feature to share your location with important contacts.

Series 2 and Series 1 contain the same set of sensors: accelerometer, gyroscope, heart rate sensor. However, the Series 2 also comes with GPS. Apple promises "instant" satellite searching, which is impressive given that most fitness trackers, including the Fitbit Surge and TomTom Spark Cardio + Music, take a minute or two to triangulate a signal. Built-in GPS allows you to go for a run without an iPhone in your hand and get accurate data on distance, pace, route, and more.

Characteristics

There are different versions of the Series 1 and Series 2 watches, but in this article we will only look at the characteristics of the standard top variants. Be sure to check and clarify the final characteristics of your device with the seller before purchasing.
