Sharing access to the scanner on a local network. How to turn a regular scanner into a network scanner

For some multifunctional devices, manufacturers provide software that allows you to click on the “Scan” button and the document will be sent to specific folder or network resource, and then the employee can easily get it via the network this document. But not all devices have such functions, so in this video we’ll look at a program that allows you to perform remote scanning, i.e. over the network. Does not require physical presence at the computer to which the scanner is connected or multifunction device so as not to disturb the working employee.

And we will use the program TWAIN Web, which can be downloaded from the official website of the developers http://unit6.ru/twain-web. The main advantages of this program are that it is completely free and easy to use, since it only requires installation of the server part on the computer to which the scanning device is connected.

Regarding the requirements, the scanning server must have operating system Windows XP and older, as well as .NET Framework 2 and higher, and on the client there is only a browser and access to the scanning server.

Download the program and run the installer ( Advanced settings \ Leave the path the same \ Specify the port). By default, port 80 is specified, but I do not recommend specifying it, since this port may already be occupied by Skype or a web server. If you know for sure that neither the web server nor Skype will be installed on this machine, then you can leave the default port 80. I will indicate 81.

The page with the web interface for scanning is loaded. What we should pay attention to is the address http://127.0.0.1:81/TWAIN@Web. Actually, we will knock on the address of this page from other computers to perform a scan. More precisely, by correcting the IP address of the computer on which the program is running. Here we have the address 127.0.0.1, this is the address of the local machine, that is, now we have logged in to ourselves.

We will also need to create a rule in the Windows firewall, or in a third-party firewall if you do not use the standard one Windows firewall. (Start\Control Panel\Windows Firewall\ Extra options\ Rules for incoming connections \ Create a rule \ For a program or port \ TCP 81 \ Allow connection \ For all profiles)

Now let's try to scan a document from a client computer, to do this in address bar enter http://192.168.0.4:81/TWAIN@Web(192.168.0.4 – IP address of the scanning server). The web interface was displayed, which means that the service was running on the server and the firewall let us through.

Scan options:

- scanner selection- there are usually 2 devices present here, this is the TWAIN driver supplied by the equipment manufacturer and the WIA driver. Personally, I was able to scan only through WIA, which is why we choose it. When switching, you can see what resolution range is supported, as you can see, the TWAIN driver produces some unrealistic numbers, and WIA is similar to the truth;

- name and number;

- DPI resolution - usually 150 is enough so that the file is not large and everything can be seen;

- color, output file type and paper size.

If you want to scan several documents in a row, then there is the item “ Batch scanning" Here you should specify the number of documents scanned and the delay between scans, i.e. the time it takes to replace the sheet on the scanner in seconds. This delay is also performed during the first scan so that you have time to get to the scanner and place the document there.

But there are subtleties here; you can specify scanning documents and saving them in separate jpeg file s. But, in internet explorer, every time you will be asked to save or open the file, you will still have to go to the computer every time to select an action. In this situation, you can save documents in pdf file, then only after scanning of all documents a request to save the document will appear.

If you need to scan each sheet into a separate jpeg file, you can use a browser Google Chrome, in which documents are automatically saved in a specified folder, without prompting. And in general, everything works more adequately in Chrome, as you saw in Internet Explorer, the file name and numbering did not work, but here everything is fine. It’s also worth considering that file numbering will continue from the last scan, even if you haven’t scanned for a week.

Now, we can simply create a shortcut on the user's desktop at this page, and if you have a network with a domain, using group policy You can distribute this shortcut to all computers in a matter of minutes!

Thus, you can scan even from devices such as phones and tablets, the only condition is that they are on the same network, and then continue through the browser.

If over time you need to change the port on which the server part of the program runs, you can change it at any time ( Start\Programs\TWAIN@Web\Configuration)

It is also advisable to specify automatic restart of the scanning service in case of failures (Start\Control Panel\Administration\Services\TWAIN@Web\Startup type: automatic\Recovery: for all failures - restart the service)

And if you have any questions or suggestions, please contact the developers, they welcome such initiatives!

Instructions

Download RemoteScan 5 to share the scanner over the network in Windows. You can download it here http://www.remote-scan.com/. Install the server version of the program on the computer to which the scanner is connected. Install the client version of the program on other computers on the network. When installing latest version the program will display a message saying that the scanner is , don't worry, this is normal. After installing the server version, a program icon will appear in the tray. Click on it right click mouse, go to “Settings” to connect the scanner to the network. Select the scanner and configure the ports. The scanner may not be able to detect it right away; it will take from one to three minutes.

Open your firewall/antivirus and allow access to port 6077, if you have NOD 32 antivirus, go to your personal firewall, go to interactive mode in the settings and create a separate rule for the RemoteScan program. After this, install the client versions on other computers. Network installation on Windows is complete.

Set up network scanner on Ubuntu OS. Go to the terminal, enter the command #apt-get install and enter the name the required package- sane-utils, then open the scanner configuration file, which can be located in the /etc/sane.d/ folder with the name saned.conf, add to the end of the file the address of the computer to which you want to share the scanner. Edit the file #nano /etc/inetd.conf, add the line sane-port stream tcp nowait saned:saned and specify the following path /usr/sbin/saned saned.

Create a Scanner group: #groupadd scanner. Add users to this group group with the following command: # #usermod -aG scanner “Username”; usermod -aG scanner saned. Edit the file 40-libsane.rules, located in the nano /lib/udev/rules.d/ folder, and find your scanner there. Make the line with the name of the scanner look something like this: # “Name of the scanner”; ATTRS(idVendor)=="03f0", ATTRS(idProduct)=="4305", ENV(libsane_matched)="yes", MODE="664", "Group name"="scanner".

Set up the client computer: install the sane-utils package using standard program install apt-get install packages, edit the net.conf file located in the nano /etc/sane.d/ folder, add the address of the computer with the scanner to the end of this file. The scanner's network connection is complete.

In contrast to Windows, which is easy to install and configure, Linux has become a symbol of complexity and complexity of installation that can scare off anyone who does not consider themselves a virtuoso. command line and a highly qualified programmer capable of independently writing missing driver unknown device.

However, installing and setting up ubuntu is the most popular among beginners Linux distribution- no more complicated than any other operating system. This distribution is ready to run immediately after installation and includes everything necessary for work: a client for communicating via the ICQ protocol, a client Email, photo tool, audio and video player, office suite OpenOffice. In addition, a change tracking mechanism is implemented here. software, eliminating the need to monitor the release of new versions.

3. In the menu that appears, select “Install ubuntu”

4. You will need to select the language for communication again during the installation process and specify the time zone.

1. Connect and configure the router. This process is quite simple and accessible to any user. Follow the instructions provided in the documentation for your model. We only note that if this is possible, then it is better to make the distribution of IP addresses automatic. This will simplify the procedure for logging into the network for new equipment.

2. Configure each computer to work in wireless network. Most have a built-in wi-fi adapter, but for a desktop computer you may need a network adapter, which will need to be purchased separately. Setting up a wireless network is not much different from setting up a regular network. The only thing you need to do additionally is to enter a special secret code network generated by the router. The code will allow you not to worry about outside users will be able to connect to your wireless network.

3. To connect to the wireless network of your pocket computer, the easiest way is to use the built-in utility iPAQ Wireless or similar, depending on the model of your pocket computer or. Here you will also need to specify the network secret key.

After you have managed to set up Wi-Fi, you can not only access the Internet from each device on the wireless network, but also use the network: share folders, share a printer and scanner, etc.

note

Assigning to each of the computers local network IP address, check them carefully to avoid duplication, since the IP address is the same electronic devices may cause their conflict and, as a result, the impossibility of working on the same network.

Helpful advice

On the “Main gateway”, that is, the modem, enter the first address (for example, 212.120.0.1), and select the IP address for personal computers included in the local network from the range 212.120.0.2 - 212.120.0.255. The subnet mask for all devices will be the same.

Several PCs in an apartment or office does not mean that you need to connect to each of them scanner or the printer separately. To make scanning and printing devices available to everyone, connect office equipment via networks.

You will need

  • - Several computers;
  • - scanner;
  • - driver;
  • - the local network.

It often happens that in addition to a remote printer, you also need a remote printer to work. remote scanner. And if setting up a printer on a local network is not difficult, then with a scanner everything is much more complicated. The fact is that Windows OS does not provide tools for providing public access scanner. This is done at the level of its drivers. Therefore, to open access via a local network, you need to use third-party programs.

The Blind Scanner utility is great for this, it works exclusively with scanners, making them visible to all computers on the network. The program is installed on each computer in client mode, and on the computer to which the scanner is connected - in server mode.

After installation, the program will automatically start the server service and will work minimized to the tray. By opening the program window, you can see the operating mode of the service, its status (active or not), as well as the scanners connected to the computer.

The utility is active and accessible over the network. Now it needs to be installed on all computers from which the scanner will be accessed, in client mode.

After the installation is complete, the “Scannito lite” program will launch, in which you need to select BlindScanner Pro.

A scanning window will open in which you need to search for the program server. To do this, you need to open the settings (as in the screenshot) and enter local address computer to which the scanner is connected.

After this, a connection attempt will be made. If everything is entered correctly, then after a couple of seconds you will be able to see the scanner itself in the field.

Select the scanner model in the drop-down menu, after which you need to set the settings: resolution, color mode, paper size and contrast and brightness settings.

Now you can start scanning. Upon completion, the result will be displayed in the preview window, after which you can save it to any directory. Just like a printer, only one computer can access the scanner; the second must wait for the first to finish working.

This is the easiest and at the same time reliable way to share access to the scanner. It can be used both in the office and in home network when it is not possible to move the scanner from place to place. Also, any program that supports scanning, for example, ABBYY FineReader, can act as a client.

Network printing works, but network scanning fails (Windows).

Maybe, network settings The scanner drivers are not installed correctly.
To resolve the issue, follow the instructions below:

NOTE: The illustrations below are representative of your product model and operating system and may differ from your Brother model and operating system.

Step 1: Make sure your Brother machine is turned on and there are no errors on the display.

  1. If nothing appears on the display, your Brother machine is turned off or in sleep mode. Press any key to see if the device wakes up from sleep mode. If your device does not wake from sleep mode, make sure it is plugged into a working outlet and that all power buttons (if present) are turned on.
  2. Check the display for error messages. For example, "Paper Jam" or "Out of Ink/Toner." If the display shows an error, correct it.

Step 2: Check your connection

To use the Network Scan feature, your Brother machine must be in a peer-to-peer network environment.

In a shared network environment, the scanning function is only available from the server computer and does not work on client computers.

Step 3: Check that your Brother machine can print

Step 4: Check your scanner driver

Open the list of scanners and check for the Brother machine scanner shortcut.

If you don't see a Brother machine shortcut in the list of scanners, you need to install the scanner driver.

Go to section Files on this website on the page of your device model and download Full package of drivers and software. Installation instructions are available on the download page.

NOTE: Steps may vary depending on the operating system you are using.

  • If you have problems with your IP address, please contact system administrator to obtain the correct IP address.
  • Refer to the network configuration list printed earlier for how to set the device's IP address.

    If Boot Method /IP Config is set to Auto, change it to Static. For getting detailed information look User guide or Network Guide.

Step 7: Check your firewall settings

Check your firewall settings on your computer. If your computer has a firewall enabled, it may block network connection required for proper operation network scanning programs. Disable the firewall on your computer and try network scanning again.
If the network scanning feature works correctly after you disable the firewall, then the firewall was previously blocking the required network connection. In this case, Brother recommends that you disable the firewall each time you scan over the network using the scan key, or leave the firewall enabled by changing its settings.

If your firewall is blocking your network connection, it is recommended to add the following internal/external ports to your firewall:

  • UDP: 54925
  • UDP: 137
  • UDP: 161

Step 8: Uninstall and reinstall Brother drivers

  1. Uninstall and reinstall Brother drivers.

    For Windows XP SP2 or higher, as well as Windows Vista: If the firewall discovery screen appears, select Change firewall port settings to allow network connection and continue with the installation. (Recommended) (Change the Firewall port settings to enable network connection and continue with the installation (Recommended)). You may need to click a button to continue. Next.

    If you have Windows Firewall turned off, or if you are using a different firewall, you may receive a warning that the firewall has blocked the network connection. Add the following network ports according to the instructions provided in the documentation for the firewall you are using.

  2. To scan over a network: add UDP port 54925.
  3. If there are problems with network connection are not resolved, add UDP ports 137 and 161.
  4. Try scanning again to determine if the problem is resolved. If scanning fails:
  5. Make sure your computer is not running any security software or firewalls that might block your network connection.
  6. Try scanning from another computer connected to the network.

  7. These steps will help determine whether the problem is related to specific computer. If other computers are scanning, contact your computer manufacturer or network administrator for help in troubleshooting this computer.
