Offline installer. If all of the above did not help

There are currently three different issues that Windows 10 users are facing when installing updates. Firstly, there is an error downloading the update or the download process is frozen. Secondly, there are problems during the installation of the update, and finally, the system crashes with BSOD after a reboot. Below are several possible troubleshooting solutions.

Fixing Windows 10 update download problem

If the cumulative update does not download, try the following steps:

If a cumulative update freezes during download or the installation fails, something has gone wrong with the update files. After the folder containing the update files is cleared, Windows Update will try to download the update components again. Go to the following location:

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Delete all files/folders, but do not delete the Download folder itself. Select all files and folders using CTRL + A and press Delete key to delete. Restart your computer and run the update process again.

If the cumulative update freezes during download, try the following solution:

  1. Enter Services
  2. Scroll to Service Delivery optimization.
  3. Right-click on the service and select Properties.
  4. Change the “Startup Type” to “Manual”.
  5. Restart your computer.
  6. If Windows 10 update still gets stuck, change the startup type to Automatic (Delayed Start).

Stop the Windows Update service

If stopping the Delivery Optimization service does not solve the problem, also try stopping the Windows Update service. If your Windows 10 update is stuck at the “Initializing...” step, try the following solution:

  1. Click on the Start menu icon.
  2. Enter Services and launch the classic application of the same name.
  3. Scroll to Service Windows Update.
  4. Right-click on the service and select Stop.
  5. Restart your computer.
  6. Check for new updates.
  7. The update should proceed as normal.

Windows Update reset script

Completely reset the Windows Update client settings. It has been tested on Windows 7, 8, 10 and Server 2012 R2. The script will configure services and registry keys related to Windows Update, restoring the default settings. It will also clean up files related to Windows Update.

Fixing Windows 10 update installation problem

In some cases, you may encounter a problem while installing the update. If the update installation is stuck at some point, try the next solution.

If your computer is frozen at the stage, then follow the instructions below.

  • While holding the power button, turn off the machine.
  • Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode.
  • Sign in to your account (if required).
  • Make sure all virus scanners are disabled before continuing.
  • From the Start menu, type Recovery and select the appropriate desktop app.
  • Click Running System Restore.
  • Select an earlier restore point, and then click Next.
  • Follow the instructions to begin system recovery.
  • Wait while your computer completes the system restore process.
  • Regardless of whether the restore is successful or fails, you will most likely get rid of the error stuck at the moment “Preparing to set up Windows. Don't turn off your computer."
  • Sign in to your account if required.
  • Disable virus scanners before continuing.
  • Start the Windows update process.
  • The update should now install without problems.

Some users may encounter a stop error that causes a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) to be displayed during a system reboot.

If you encounter a BSOD crash when upgrading Windows 10, check out this article:

Other Windows 10 update problems

After installing Windows 10 updates, you may encounter some problems such as internet connection errors.

To resolve these issues, you need to run the following commands in the Command Prompt (cmd.exe). In the search box on the taskbar, type Command line, press and hold (or right-click) “Command Prompt” and select “Run as administrator.” After opening the command line, enter the following commands one by one:

netsh winsock reset catalog

netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

If you still encounter the “No Internet Connection” issue, please update your computer's IP address. To do this, open a command prompt (Win + R, enter cmd.exe and press Enter) and enter the following command:

ipconfig /renew

Disabling Windows 10 updates and drivers

Sometimes you may need to disable the installation of Windows 10 updates on your computer. Windows 10 Pro users can defer updates for a certain period of time, but Windows 10 Home users do not have this option.

Microsoft has provided a separate "Show or Hide Updates" tool to disable cumulative updates or even drivers.

DISM commands to check for problems with Windows 10

You can use the official DISM commands to restore a Windows image to fix any problem with your updates. Before you start, it's a good idea to take a full system backup or create a system restore point in case something goes wrong.

Using the CheckHealth option in DISM

Team /CheckHealth DISM allows you to detect potential corruption. This command is used only to find damage, but does not perform any repair operations.

Command line, right-click on the link that appears and select "Run as Administrator" because running DISM requires device administrator rights.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

UsageoptionsScanHealth inDISM

Team / ScanHealth DISM allows you to scan your Windows image for any damage. Unlike /CheckHealth, the /ScanHealth check can take up to 10 minutes.

To run this command follow these steps:

1. Search for Start menu Command line

2. In the "Command Prompt" type the following command and press Enter:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

UsageoptionsRestoreHealth inDISM

Team /RestoreHealth DISM allows you to automatically repair damaged Windows images. Unlike /ScanHealth, the /RestoreHealth scan can take up to 10 minutes.

To run this command follow these steps:

1. Search for Start menu Command line, right-click on the link that appears and select "Run as administrator".

2. In the "Command Prompt" type the following command and press Enter:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Note: While running /RestoreHealth or /ScanHealth, you may notice the procedure hangs between 20% and 40% - this is completely normal behavior.

Offline update for Windows 7 operating system

Recently, Microsoft has been forcing you to upgrade to Windows 10.
without much ceremony with the wishes of clients and when updating online from the system,
without the user's knowledge, downloads gigabytes of unnecessary mass, for the transition to win 10,
which, as you know, is stuffed with various tracking modules and stripped-down settings.
This set allows you to update working system Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 only necessary updates, and you can also integrate updates into the installation image distribution for builders of personal Windows 7 builds.
All unwanted updates are excluded.
Can be installed on any edition of Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2, any bitness and any language.
The installer itself determines the version of Windows and the necessary updates.
Includes updates for all versions of Internet Explorer, all critical, recommended and security updates.

Year of issue: 2019 (March)
Version: 19.4.10
Developer: simplex
Bit depth: 32bit, 64bit
Interface language: Multilingual (Russian present)
Tablet: Not required
System requirements: Windows 7, or Server 2008 R2

Installation:

1. Run the downloaded file (You can use it as an administrator)
2. Confirm the installation of updates with the button OK
3. Wait for the update installation to complete (Do not turn off the computer under any circumstances!)
4. Once installation is complete, restart your computer to apply the updates.

The system must have at least 10 GB of free hard drive space and preferably at least 1 GB of free RAM.

For flexible installation of the set, you can use the following keys and their combinations:
Key /Reboot for automatic reboot if required.
/S switch for a completely silent installation without windows or messages. Case matters.
Key /Silent for passive installation - progress is visible, but the installation is completely automatic.
Key /IE11 for installing the Internet Explorer 11 browser and its localization.
The /Temp= switch allows you to set a temporary working directory. It does not have to be empty, but must exist.
The /NoSpace switch allows you to skip checking the free space on the system partition; it is not recommended to use.
Examples:
You need to automatically install all updates, IE11 and reboot your computer: UpdatePack7R2.exe /ie11 /silent /reboot
You need to silently install all updates to existing products, do not change the IE version, do not restart the computer: UpdatePack7R2.exe /S
The following keys are intended for integrating updates into the distribution:
The /WimFile= key specifies the location of the wim file; you must specify an absolute path.
The /Index= key specifies the system index in the wim file; for each index it is necessary to perform the integration again.
The /Index=* key allows you to integrate updates one by one into all indexes of the wim file.
The /Optimize switch allows you to optimize the size of the wim file after integrating updates.
Notes:
Before specifying the index, it is useful to run the command: Dism /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:C:\install.wim (replace the path with your own).
Not all updates can be integrated (see table), but they will not affect the security of the system.
Examples:
You need to integrate IE11 and all updates into 1 index: UpdatePack7R2.exe /ie11 /WimFile=C:\install.wim /Index=1
You need to integrate IE11 and all updates into all indexes: UpdatePack7R2.exe /ie11 /WimFile=C:\install.wim /Index=*
You only need to integrate updates to existing products, do not change the IE version: UpdatePack7R2.exe /WimFile=C:\install.wim /Index=1

It is possible to install SP1 automatically if it is not installed on the system. To do this, you need to place the files Windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe and Windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe in the same directory with the set.
If there is UpdatePack7R2Start.cmd next to the set, it will be executed before installing updates, UpdatePack7R2Finish.cmd - after installation, UpdatePack7R2Wim.cmd - after integrating updates. By default, console windows will be shown. To hide them, the first line in the cmd file must begin with ":hide" (without quotes). The update set monitors the exit code from cmd files in case a reboot is necessary. This code is 3010 (command exit 3010).
If you want to apply your tweaks after installing Internet Explorer 11 on a working system, place the ie11.reg file in the folder with the set and it will be imported automatically.
Some switches can be replaced by renaming the set file itself. So, to install IE11, you can add the word "ie11" anywhere in the set file name, "--" for automatic reboot and "++" for passive installation.
Examples:
You need to automatically install the set on a working system along with IE11 and restart the computer: rename UpdatePack7R2.exe to UpdatePack7R2--ie11++.exe
This will be absolutely similar to using the following keys: UpdatePack7R2.exe /ie11 /silent /reboot

The size of the distribution package (wim file) will be increased by the size of the installed updates.
Integrated updates can be removed even after the system is installed.
It is recommended to unload the resident anti-virus monitor from memory while the suite is running.
A detailed update installation log is located in the %WinDir%\UpdatePack7.log file.

*Some screenshots are from older versions, but the installer itself has not changed in appearance at all.

Error 0x8000222

The information is relevant for Windows-7. When installing an update package, you receive an error message such as: Windows Update Standalone Installer encountered error 0x8000222

Windows Update Standalone Installer encountered error 0x8000222

When installing NET FRAMEWORK 4.0 and 4.5, the error ERROR HRESULT 0x8000222 appears

What to do?

Rename the SoftwareDistribution file to SoftwareDistribution.Old

Run a command prompt as an administrator and enter the command net stop wuauserv and press Enter. These steps will stop Windows Update. If you don't stop it, you won't be able to rename the folder.

Rename the file with the command ren %windir%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.Old or open drive C, find the WINDOWS folder and open it. Find the folder called "SoftwareDistribution" and rename it to "SoftwareDistribution.Old" . The full path looks like this: C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution

Run Command Prompt again as an administrator (if you closed it) and enter the command net start wuauserv and press Enter.

What to do? (The same thing, only in more detail and with pictures)

Click: Start, All Programs, Accessories. Right-click on the “command line” line, in the window that appears, select “run as administrator”.

To stop the update center, enter the command net stop wuauserv and press Enter

You can find the SoftwareDistribution folder like this: click the “start” button, then click on the “computer” line (it’s on the right), drive C, and in the Windows folder look for the SoftwareDistribution folder and rename it to SoftwareDistribution.Old.

To start the update center, enter the command net start wuauserv and press Enter

Today we will tell you how to solve one of the strangest problems that plague users of the Windows 7 operating system. And this problem lies in an excessively long, even eternal search for new updates.

Description of the problem

When trying to find and install new system updates, users are faced with the fact that the search takes too long and continues even many hours after it started, i.e. becomes infinite. At the same time, the Windows Update indicator continues to work, making you think that the process is in progress. However, the search does not complete even after several hours of tedious waiting - the Update Center simply freezes at the “Searching for updates” stage.

The reason for the eternal search for updates in Windows 7

There is an opinion that the reason for this is the update of the Windows Update client program, as well as the subsequent changes on the Windows Update servers. Microsoft appears to have changed how it checks for and downloads updates, so older Windows Update clients can no longer search for and download updates from the company's servers. This explains the fact that in most cases the problem occurs after a clean installation of the operating system.

Ways to solve the problem

There are several working solutions, all of them are described below. Do them one by one until the problem is resolved.

1. Manually updating Windows Update Client

This is the most effective and simple solution to the problem. In order for Windows Update to start searching for and installing updates again, you need to download the necessary updates for the Windows Update client program and install them manually. These updates are available for both 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) versions of Windows 7. You can view the bitness of the operating system in system properties.

For Windows 7 32-bit (x86):

For Windows 7 64-bit (x64):

Note: You may need to temporarily stop the Windows Update service before installing updates. You can do this by running the following command in a command prompt running as an administrator:

Once the updates are installed, restart your computer, and then search for new updates. After 10-60 minutes, Windows Update should show a list of all available updates. But if this doesn't help you, read on.

2. Installation of Convenience Rollup

In 2016, Microsoft released a large update rollup that contains almost all updates released since Windows 7 SP1 (Service Pack 1). Thus, you can try to solve the problem of endless search for updates by installing Convenience Rollup.

Again, for your convenience, we provide direct links to download the Convenience Rollup:

It is important to note that this service pack includes updates released after SP1, therefore you must have SP1 installed to install Convenience Rollup. To make sure that Service Pack 1 is installed, look at the system properties.

5. Editing DNS settings

A long search for updates may be caused by problems on the side of the provider's DNS server. Therefore, you can try to solve the problem by using free public DNS servers that provide a more reliable Internet connection.

To change the DNS address, open Network and Sharing Center.

Open the connection/adapter properties.

In the properties window, find the TCP/IPv4 protocol. Double-click the left mouse button to open the properties of this protocol.

Activate the "Use the following DNS server addresses" option and enter any of the following addresses:

Google Public DNS:

  • Preferred DNS Server: 8.8.8.8
  • Alternate DNS Server: 8.8.4.4

Yandex.DNS:

  • Preferred DNS Server: 77.88.8.8
  • Alternate DNS server: 77.88.8.1

OpenDNS:

  • Preferred DNS Server: 208.67.222.222
  • Alternate DNS server: 208.67.220.220

The new settings should take effect immediately after application. But if you don't notice any changes, try clearing your DNS cache. To do this, open a command prompt window with administrator rights and then run the command ipconfig /flushdns.

6. Checking the integrity of system files using the SFC utility

The endless search for updates can be caused by damaged or missing Windows Update files or settings. You can check and restore the integrity of these files using the built-in SFC tool. We talked about how to work with him.

Have a great day!

Hi all. Alexander Glebov is in touch with you. In my next article, I tell you how to remove the endless search for updates in Windows 7. The problem is quite pressing, and if you constantly have the update search slider spinning and find nothing, then read on...

Endless search for Windows 7 updates - the essence of the problem

Very often in my practice I encounter the problem that in Windows 7 the search for updates takes an infinitely long time. I remember leaving the laptop for a day, the slider ran and ran, but never found any updates.

What’s noteworthy is that this problem can appear in both x64 Windows 7 and x86 Windows 7. I also noticed that on powerful computers (Core i7, Core i5) there are still updates after 4 hours. But I still couldn’t find it on my Asus Eee PC netbook. Okay, let's move on to the solution.

Windows 7 takes forever to find updates - step by step solution

After googling, I found out that Microsoft knows about this problem and has released a special patch, and in order to eliminate the endlessly long search for Windows 7 updates, it must be installed, to do this we will follow these steps:

Microsoft.com download download
Yandex.Disk download download

As a result, your computer will reboot and install the update we need. After the reboot, launch the control panel, there we click on the “Windows Update” button, and on the left click “Search for updates”. Voila, after a short time the necessary updates will be found. You can start installation.

If all of the above did not help

So, it happens that the method described above does not help, in this case you can try installing the following updates - kb3020369 and kb3172605 (thanks to user Nikolay).
