Carbon Backup is not titanic, but carbon. Helium - a program for backing up, restoring and synchronizing data on Android How to use carbon premium backup

A rather interesting version of the application for backing up applications and data on smartphones and tablets, which is offered to us by the company ClockworkMod. “Why is he so interesting?” you ask. And it is interesting because it has good functionality even without Root rights, although for complete happiness it is best to have them, then the program will work at “full power”, although everything is enough without them.

So, this program can create backup copies of data or synchronize data between smartphones. Allows you to save data both to a memory card and to the “cloud” or to a PC through a special client, links to which you will find below.

Helium installation:
1. Install Helium on Android
- Is there a root? You don't have to read any further
2. Install and run Helium Desktop (link below)
- Windows users must for their device
3. Connect your Android device to your computer
4. Helium on Android is activated and ready to go

Features of the free version of Helium:
- Backup and restore to memory card
- Backup and restore to PC

Features of the premium version of Helium:
- No advertising
- Schedule automatic backups
- Synchronization between Android devices
- Backup and restore to the cloud: Dropbox, Box, Google Drive

Note: Helium is not available for Motorola devices because Motorola broke the default backup mechanism in Android. Until this is fixed by the company itself, Helium will not work on its devices with official firmware and custom ones based on them. The situation is similar with some Sony smartphones, in particular Xperia S and Xperia Z. The manufacturer deliberately cut out the necessary functionality from the firmware.

Many of us do not think about creating a backup copy of the data stored on our smartphone, and when data loss happens for any reason, we can only regret that we did not think about it earlier. Android users may seem less concerned because some data, such as contacts and calendar events, can be stored in a Google account. However, this is clearly not enough when it comes to backing up installed applications and their data.
Creating a backup copy of applications is very important in a situation where, for example, you need to send your phone for repair. Very often, during the process of repairing a smartphone, its settings can be reset to factory settings, as a result of which you will lose all the applications you have installed and the data associated with them. If you actively used your smartphone, but did not create backup copies, then data loss can lead to a real disaster.
In this article I want to make a short review of the Helium App Sync and Backup application (formerly Carbon App Sync and Backup), which allows you to create backup copies of various types of data, save these copies on different drives, including in the cloud and in if necessary, promptly restore. Moreover, with this application you can also sync data across multiple Android devices.

One of the advantages of the Helium application over other similar applications is that it does not require root access (Superuser rights), while at the same time, if they are available, the available functionality of the application increases. In particular, on rooted devices you will be able to use Helium standalone without the need to install the Helium Backup desktop client, in addition you will be able to make backups of Wi-Fi profiles. If you do not have Superuser rights on your smartphone, you will have to install a desktop client and connect your smartphone to your computer via a USB port to use this application. I think it’s worth reminding here that the procedure for granting root rights on a smartphone is quite risky, and as a result you can lose all your data, so it’s better not to be lazy about installing the client and working via USB. Moreover, as my practice has shown, not even all rooted phones can work without a desktop client; for example, this does not work for Sony smartphones.

Backing up apps and data with Helium

After you install the application on your smartphone and the client program on your computer, you will need to connect your smartphone using a USB cable to your computer. At the same time, USB debugging must be enabled in your settings (for me this option is in the Options for developers section).

After connecting your smartphone to your computer using a USB cable, you will need to go to the Helium application on your smartphone and the client program on your computer. If everything is completed successfully, a green checkmark will appear on the computer screen.

Then you can only work with the application on your smartphone. The Helium application has two tabs - “Backup” and “Restore and Sync”.
On the “Reservations” tab, you will see a starting information view, which you will need to swipe down to get to the information that is available for reservation. By the way, if you want to backup not only data, but also the applications themselves, then in this start view you need to uncheck the “Only application data” checkbox.

Once you slide the start curtain at the bottom, you will see a list of available reservation information. Including the launcher (if you have one), SMS and call logs, custom dictionaries and dialing settings, Wi-Fi connection settings and most of the installed applications (however, not all applications, for example, Facebook applications are not on this list I found it, I don’t know why).

To create a backup, you will need to check the boxes of the applications that you want to back up. As you select applications, information about them will be displayed below. After all the necessary applications have been selected, you will need to click on the “Backup” button. The application offers several places for backup - “Internal memory”, “External SD card”, “Scheduled backup”, Google Disk and your cloud storage account (for example Dropbox).

The “Schedule Reservation” option is available only in the premium version of the application. But I think that the first three options are quite enough to create a complete backup of your data.

Helium is a program that is designed to backup applications installed on a portable device. As you know, there are software solutions designed to synchronize your phone book, calendar, notes, messages and other data. So, this application works on their principle, but differs in that it is intended for “backup” of installed games and programs. This program is intended for those who are going to “move” to a new device, but do not want to “manually” transfer all the applications installed on it. Helium will be especially useful for those users who install third-party applications that are not presented in the Google Play digital store.

One of the key advantages of the program is that it does not require Root rights from the user. Moreover, this utility allows you to independently select applications that need to be “backed up”, can work with a memory card, can synchronize via USB and miniUSB cables, and also does not require connection to a computer. Helium's interface is quite nice and intuitive. The program itself is distributed in both paid and free versions.

Finding an excellent and reliable Android application for such an important purpose as backup is quite a difficult task. At first glance, the choice is quite extensive, but if we take a closer look at the offered utilities, it turns out that only a few are able to perform their direct functions efficiently and quickly. The very concept of backup (or, in Russian, backup) is copying all the vital data of a device to a new location in order to restore it, if necessary, in the event of destruction or damage.

Some backup applications require root access to work, some are not powerful enough, and some do not stand up to criticism at all. For a long time, the “” program remained the leader in this application segment. But many users agree that it is so inconvenient and confusing that very often this simply discourages any desire to use it. That is why one of the “youngest” backup programs “Carbon” is becoming increasingly popular.

"Carbon - App Sync and Backup" is the brainchild of the famous Kushik Dutta. It was he who at one time developed the legendary recovery console “ClockworkMod”, which everyone who tried to change the firmware on their device encountered. But the main advantage of Carbon, fortunately, is not the famous name of the developer, but how high-quality and convenient the program itself is. Under its generally uncomplicated interface hides a huge amount of functionality. Any user can easily backup to a smartphone memory card, personal computer, another device running Android OS, any online file storage, etc. In this case, you can configure the backup to be carried out according to a specific schedule. And the main thing is that this entire range of tasks does not require root rights, and the processes themselves proceed as quickly and efficiently as possible.

But let’s immediately focus on the negative point - the full functionality of the program is available only in its paid version. But believe me, these 5 dollars are worth spending on such a useful assistant. In the free version, only the option of backup to the device’s memory card and to a computer is available. But here, too, some restrictions can be bypassed and cheated. With a few simple manipulations in the dropsync application, you can achieve absolutely full synchronization with other Android devices, as well as with Dropbox.

Let's get back to ease of use. In order to make a backup, you just need to select the necessary applications from the list and click on the “Backup” button. That's it, this completes the backup procedure. We also note that to make a backup on a PC, you must additionally install a server application, versions of which exist for both Windows, Linux and MacOS X.

What is the difference between “Carbon - App Sync and Backup” and the above-mentioned “Titanium Backup”? The first and most significant difference is that the application does not require root rights. Therefore, “Carbon” is the best option for those who are just trying their hand at firmware, but are still worried about the safety of their programs and data. Both programs have both paid and free versions. But the functionality of the free “Carbon” is higher than that of its competitor. The paid version of the program, among other things, is completely free of third-party advertising and allows you to make backups automatically at the appointed time.

Another competitor of “Carbon” can be called “”. This utility can work with both rooted and non-rooted devices. But it is worth noting that in their absence, the GoBackup functionality drops significantly, and you will only be able to make backup copies of contacts, application settings and messages. And in the free version, you will also not be able to use the power of cloud systems. If your device is rooted, you can back up the applications directly, and also hide the interfaces of processes while they are running.

To summarize, it becomes obvious that the most optimal backup program in all respects is “Carbon - App Sync and Backup”. Only this utility is as easy to use as possible, has wide functionality and at the same time boasts extreme reliability.

To start working with Helium you will have to not only install the application on your mobile device, but also the desktop version of the program on your PC. You also need to find in this list the drivers corresponding to your smartphone model and install them on your computer. Only after completing these operations will you be ready to start working in the application.

Connect your smartphone to your computer via USB. Launch the application and follow Helium's simple and clear instructions. The program will first direct you to Settings to launch the mode USB Debugging. You don’t have to delve into the menu yourself - Helium will immediately open the desired directory, all you have to do is select the desired item in the list. Next, the same procedure will be done to transfer the connected device to Camera mode (PTP).

Next, Helium will search for the desktop application on your computer. Since we have already installed it, and also did not forget about the drivers for the smartphone, this step will be short, and you will immediately see the following window: the application will report that the backup has been successfully enabled (backup, as I understand it) and the ability to disconnect the gadget from the PC. Now you can work with the program essentially, no longer needing to connect to a computer.

This is where the technical formalities end. Next, you create backup copies of application information, saving them either on a memory card or in a cloud storage of your choice. Helium will also allow you to synchronize several of your devices, even if they are on different networks - your Google account will be used here. The second tab of the main application window is Restoring data from backups. Helium will detect all archives of this type and restore them. But be sure that you remember the password with which these archives were locked when they were created (if, of course, you locked them at all).

Well, for those who are constantly worried about the security of vital data in applications, Helium has acquired such a function as scheduled reservation: Your smartphone will back up your data at the set time. Regular saving of such archives guarantees that in case of an unforeseen situation, you will return to the most up-to-date information and settings. Happy backup!
