New Nokia 3310 sales start. Everything new is well forgotten old

In July 2017, just under 23,000 Nokia 3310 from Finnish HMD Global were sold in Russia. This follows from materials from a partner of several electronics manufacturers that Vedomosti obtained. Their authenticity was confirmed by employees of two retail chains.

Nokia 3310, sales of which began in May, occupied about 0.6% of the entire Russian mobile phone market, or a little more than 2% of the push-button device market. This is significantly less than that of market leaders. The best-selling mobile phone in July was the Samsung Galaxy J1 smartphone with 8 GB memory. Just under 127,000 of these devices were sold. In the segment of push-button phones, the highest sales were for Fly FF179. 78,000 devices were sold.

Nokia 3310 was originally produced in 2000–2005. 126 million of these devices were sold worldwide and Nokia itself called the 3310 the best-selling phone in the world. HMD presented an updated version of the device in February 2017 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. “For developed markets, the release of Nokia 3310 can be considered a kind of PR stunt, but there is demand among consumers here too. For example, it may be in demand as a phone “for fun” or as a device for information detox, a phone for the weekend,” HMD President Florian Seiche previously said in an interview RBC.

In the first days after the device appeared on the Russian market, retail employees interviewed by Vedomosti spoke about increased demand for the Nokia 3310 and its shortage.

Analysts and retailers have differing opinions regarding the first successes of the revived Nokia model in Russia. 2% of the push-button phone market is very little, says Eldar Murtazin, leading analyst at Mobile Research Group. According to him, Nokia 3310 was unable to have a noticeable impact on the Russian market of push-button phones, since the device turned out to be very expensive - several times more expensive than competitors’ devices. The popular push-button Fly costs less than 1,000 rubles, and Nokia costs almost 4,000 rubles.

Share in the retail network MTS Nokia 3310 has the same as on the market - 0.6%, says its representative Dmitry Solodovnikov. Low sales results confirm that subscribers are less and less interested in push-button basic phone models, he believes.

At Svyaznoy, Nokia 3310 entered the top ten best-selling push-button phones in July 2017; at the start of sales in May, the demand for the device was frantic and higher than for any other push-button phone, says retailer representative Sergei Tikhonov. What makes the device popular is its recognizable brand, reliability and technical characteristics of the phone that are interesting for a push-button device, he believes. According to Tikhonov, such a start after a long absence of the brand in Russia can be considered successful.

In July 2017, Nokia 3310 was in demand in the Russian market - in its price segment of 3500–4000 rubles. this model was the clear leader in the Russian market both in physical and monetary terms, several times ahead of its closest competitor, says a representative of “ M.video» Valeria Andreeva.

Director of the purchasing department of Euroset, Alexey Shirokov, notes the stable demand for Nokia 3310. It is supported by a good price-quality ratio, and the memory of the brand and the legendary model is still strong among buyers, he says.

From the materials available to Vedomosti, it follows that of the 16.7 million mobile phones sold in Russia in the first half of 2017, push-button devices accounted for 25.6%. Over the year, their share decreased by 5.7 percentage points against 3.3 percentage points in the first half of 2016. The market for push-button phones, which over the past few years accounted for approximately a third of the devices sold in Russia, decreased noticeably in the first half of 2017 g., agrees Murtazin. According to him, it is increasingly difficult for push-button phones to compete with smartphones due to lower prices for them. The cheapest smartphones cost about 1,000 rubles, that is, only a few hundred rubles more than push-button devices.

In Russia you can now buy the legendary Nokia 3310 again. Sales of the updated model began on Tuesday, May 16. The modern version of the phone can be purchased in some stores in Moscow and the Moscow region; in other cities only pre-order is available for now.

The Finnish company HMD Global Oy, which has exclusive rights to the Nokia brand, announced the relaunch of the legendary phone at the Mobile World Congress exhibition in February 2017.

The updated mobile device has a similar appearance and form factor. The device itself has the same ringtones and the famous Snake game.

The company claims that one charge of the Nokia 3310 will last for 22 hours of talk time and 31 days of standby time. However, there have also been changes that correspond to the spirit of the times: the device has become thinner, its weight has decreased significantly. The monochrome display has been replaced by a 2.4-inch color screen with low resolution, which allows the phone to hold a charge for a long time. The most “radical” changes are the appearance of a two-megapixel camera, support for the MP3 format and the ability to use two SIM cards. The new product costs 3990 rubles.

Everything new is well forgotten old

The updated phone comes in four different colors - red, yellow, blue and gray. Nevertheless, this feature was also available in the first model of the device; moreover, there were five colors - classic blue, known throughout the world, as well as silver, yellow, red and white. The ability to easily change the body at one time gave impetus to the production of replaceable panels. Third-party developers took advantage of this feature of the Nokia 3310, providing owners with panels with their favorite movie characters.

The company expects that the 3310 will be purchased as a second phone due to nostalgic feelings.

A cultural scientist and associate professor at the School of Philosophy told NSN that the return of the legendary smartphone is a natural trend for modern society.

“The iPhone is too convenient. There are apps for everything. This apparent simplicity hides complexity because everything is available to you. Whereas when you get an old phone, you realize that it has exactly the features you need. That is, there is no need to have a Pay system,” says the expert. — This already happened in 2011, when in the hipster subculture it was fashionable to refuse to buy a new iPhone for the sake of old Nokias. They were tied with duct tape because the devices were already falling apart. They turned to simplicity. And Nokia feels this need for simplicity.”

Not alone 3310

In addition to the updated Nokia 3310, in the second quarter of 2017, global sales of the Finnish brand’s line of smartphones on the Android operating system (owned by the American one) – Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and Nokia 3 – will also begin.

The flagship will be Nokia 6, which is also scheduled to go on sale in the first half of 2017.

Pre-orders open on May 18, the model will cost Russian users 15,990 rubles. The device will be equipped with a 5.5-inch Gorilla Glass display, a 16 MP camera, 4 GB of RAM and 16 GB of main memory.

The remaining two models will be budget versions of devices from the Finnish brand. The cost of Nokia 3 will be 9990 rubles, for this money the buyer will receive a device with an 8-megapixel front and 8-megapixel main cameras, the device’s screen has a diagonal of 5 inches. The smartphone supports the LTE standard and also has a slot for a memory card.

Nokia 5 is made in an aluminum case, the display diagonal is 5.2 inches, the resolution of the main camera is 13, and the front camera is 8 megapixels.

This model will cost 12,990 rubles.

HMD Global, which bought the rights to the Nokia brand in May 2016 from, has set a course for producing inexpensive and durable phones. The Redmond-based corporation, in turn, owned Nokia's mobile division since the spring of 2014, introducing several device models that did not resonate with consumers.

This week at MWC 2017 there were several new Nokia Android smartphones, as well as an updated version of the Nokia 3310 phone. Should we expect their appearance in Russia?

According to Alberto Matrone, vice president of HMD Global in Eastern Europe, Russia is one of the priority countries for Nokia sales. At the time when Nokia collaborated with Microsoft and released Lumia smartphones, the share of Windows Phone-based devices in Russia was higher than the average in all countries of the world.

Matrone said that Nokia devices will appear in Russia in the second quarter of 2017 simultaneously with other countries. He does not yet know how much they will cost in our country. In Europe, the most expensive smartphone Nokia 6 is priced at 299 euros (18,360 rubles), the middling Nokia 5 is priced at 189 euros (11,600 rubles), and the cheapest Nokia 3 is priced at 139 euros (8,500 rubles). The Nokia 3310 phone will cost 49 euros (3,000 rubles) in European countries. The cost of these devices in Russia will depend on the exchange rate, as well as on the pricing policy of local retailers.

In the near future, HMD Global will launch its own online store in Russia, where it will sell products under the Nokia brand, and in a few months it will begin supplying devices to the largest retail chains. Currently, Nokia phones are presented in the Russian Microsoft online store, but it is unlikely to want to sell Android-based devices.

The Caviar company showed at the MWC 2017 exhibition its own interpretations of the Nokia 3310 cell phone - Supremo Putin and Titano. The first model received a titanium case, plated with gold of the highest standard, ceramic buttons and the coat of arms of Russia applied to the central control button. On the back cover there is a bas-relief of Russian President Vladimir Putin. This version of the phone will be sold in Russia for 99 thousand rubles and will appear simultaneously with the start of sales of Nokia 3310 throughout the world.

The Nokia 3310 Titano embodies the legendary strength of the original Nokia 3310, but the body of this phone is not plastic, but is made of hardened bulletproof titanium grade BT 23, decorated with Damascus steel. Ceramic buttons. This phone will cost less in Russia - 89 thousand rubles. Caviar chose not to decorate Nokia Android smartphones.

And other new products for 2017 from HMD Global, many people have a pressing question: when will it be possible to buy a phone in Russia and at what price. If you thought that sales of Nokia 3, 5, 6 and 3310 would begin in the very near future, you are seriously mistaken!

Update from 05/16/2017: . Read users of the new version of Nokia.

Representatives from HMD Global have openly stated that all new devices announced at the MWC 2017 International Consumer Electronics Show will only go on sale in the second quarter. To be more precise, we will be able to buy a new version of Nokia 3310 no earlier than May. Or maybe later...

The fact is that the demand for the 2017 version of Nokia turned out to be simply stunning. The manufacturer itself did not expect that a push-button phone with a minimal set of functions would gather so many fans. Moreover, touchscreen smartphones are relevant today, and not phones with buttons from the past. Given demand indicators, it can be assumed that supply will be limited at first.

Nokia 3, 5, 6: start of sales in Russia

There is information about the start of sales of other new Nokia products. Sales of the new Nokia 3 and .
But, alas, it will not appear on the window until June. As for the prices for new devices, they will differ depending on the region in which they are sold. The exact cost of new products in Russia is still unknown. At the same time, HMD Global itself announced that Nokia 3, 5, 6 will be put up for sale at prices of 139, 189 and 229 euros, respectively.

Thus, we can conclude that the models of the 2000s. and 2017 there are more differences than similarities. The original design has not been preserved, the modern version is thinner and lighter, supports new services, and the software has been replaced.

Start of sales and cost of the updated Nokia 3310 (2017)

HMD Global names the second quarter of 2017 as the approximate date for mass sales of the updated Nokia 3310. The price will be budget, about 49€ or 52$. It is in the European market that manufacturers expect the main demand for the model, and they do not plan to bring it to the American market at all.

Start of sales of the updated Nokia 3310 in Russia. Price of the updated Nokia 3310

On May 16, sales of the updated version of Nokia 3310 started in Russia. The cost of the phone is 3990 rub.., which is more than 30% higher than the originally expected price.

Advantages of the updated Nokia 3310 (2017)

One of the reasons for the high interest in the new model is, of course, the nostalgia of users who are tired of fragile and expensive smartphones, for the times of the first, symbolizing the progress of phones. Such a marketing ploy as the game “Snake” also plays on the longing for the past.

An absolute advantage is the affordable price of the model. In addition, modern models are quite expensive to repair. In the event of a problem, the Nokia 3310 elements are simply removed, which does not create problems for their replacement or repair.

Like the original model, the remake boasts a powerful battery that the makers say lasts 22 hours of talk time and a month of battery life.

Of course, manufacturers sought to replicate the strength and “indestructibility” of the phone from the early 2000s. However, it is too early to say how successful this was.

For “non-advanced” users, the important point is the phone’s no-frills design and non-touch screen. It's easy to type messages on it, and the menu has a classic look. Navigation through applications is carried out using the four directions of the navigation button-joystick (up, down, left and right), on both sides of which there are built-in call and end call buttons.

Disadvantages of the updated Nokia 3310 (2017)

The lack of modernity and simple interface is the main drawback of the new Nokia 3310. Even budget smartphones support fourth-party networks generation() and Wi-Fi, which cannot be said about the Nokia 3310. The model’s camera is also not very high quality. If we take the 2000s, then one could only dream of such a camera, but in real 2017, this is an irrelevant solution. Most likely, the phone can count on an audience for which a mobile phone is, in the old fashioned way, only a means of communication. Users also purchase the updated Nokia 3310 for history or as a second device.

Experts are cautious with forecasts for the future of the updated Nokia 3310. Despite the active marketing campaign of the manufacturers, the 2017 model can still hardly be called a reincarnation of the model of the 2000s. In addition, the requirements for mobile phones have changed significantly. Nokia 3310 was the flagship of its time, the 2000s, and whether it can win over a modern audience for whom the phone has become a way of life is an open question.

What the updated Nokia 3310 will become - marketing built on nostalgia or a revived legend, how much the remake will be able to repeat the success of its predecessor and surpass universal smartphones in popularity, can only be judged after sales begin.

Elite models of the updated Nokia 3310

Two manufacturers of luxury devices, Gresso and Caviar, announced their intention to release an updated premium Nokia 3310. Gresso plans to keep the phone's specifications, but give it a metal body made from a slab of aircraft-grade titanium, as well as cast titanium on every button. This uniqueness will make the model premium and so durable that a fall from 10 meters will go unnoticed.

Caviar announced that it will release two exclusive models. One is distinguished by the presence of gold elements on a titanium case, applied using Double Electroplated technology. The second is a unique bulletproof titanium engraved using the Damascus steel technique.
