VPN gate does not connect. Connect to free VPN Gate servers using SoftEther VPN

The abbreviation VPN means “virtual private network” or in Russian virtual private network. Let's talk a little about methods of bypassing blocking, protecting transmitted data when visiting public places, and also about using the free VPN service - VPN Gate.

VPN as a means of protecting information

Using a VPN, we can connect via the Internet to a server located in another location and surf sites from it. First, it helps encrypt traffic between you and the site. Your Internet provider will not be able to listen to it. Secondly, if you are in a cafe and connected to a public Wi-Fi network, then using VPN technology you can surf the World Wide Web safely. If you do not use a VPN, an attacker connecting to the same network will be able to intercept your traffic and decrypt it. He can do the same by creating a “fake” network with a popular name. For example McDonalds_Free_WiFi or something like that.

VPN - as a means of bypassing state blocking

As of 2018, RKN (Roskomonadzor) is blocking the Telegram messenger and is currently unsuccessful. A huge number of resources are blocked, but Telegram itself continues to work without any proxies or VPNs. Why this happens is a question for RKN specialists, however, if suddenly for some reason the site you need is blocked, just connect to a VPN service located somewhere in the Netherlands or Germany, then you can easily open any blocked resource.

Installing and configuring OpenVPN GUI

To connect to VPN servers we will use a free cross-platform open source program - OpenVPN. It provides the maximum level of performance and protection. All data is securely encrypted using OpenSSL technology.

I recommend downloading a file whose name ends in UDP. Be sure to save it in the Config directory located in the folder of the previously installed OpenVPN GUI. By default it is located here C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config

relies on the client to hide your real IP address when browsing the Internet, so you can access places where your IP is blocked.

VPN Gate Client Plug-in is an add-on to the client part of SoftEther VPN, with which you can provide yourself with online anonymity. The plugin also includes SoftEther client, so there is no need to download it separately. To launch the plugin, after starting the client, in the main window you need to select VPN Gate Public VPN Relay Servers, then a new window will open in front of you with a list of VPN servers, after which you can select the one you want to connect to.

VPN Gate Client Plug-in gives you a large list of servers, you can view their IP address, region, uptime, line speed and other parameters. It is recommended to choose a VPN server that is closer to your location (I don’t think you will be able to do this). Next, we connect to the desired server and rejoice, now you can safely visit prohibited websites. Most of the servers in the VPN Gate Client Plug-in are located in Korea and Japan, with a few in the USA and Europe.

As they would say in the report at the Party Congress, about 30 years ago, “The current political situation in the world has taken a serious turn.” Russia is under sanctions, and although this has not affected the majority of the country, the petty machinations of the “imperialists” will spoil the mood. I'm talking about blocking access to some servers and services on the Internet. The thing is not terrible, but, you see, it is unpleasant.

Now we will do something to get rid of them. Error 403 is precisely a ban on access to a site, or a specific subsection of it; it often occurs if your computer is prohibited from receiving data from there, and this was not done by your provider, but by the owners of the site itself. What to do if error 403 appears over and over again? How to get rid of 403 error? This is what we will do now.

It is easy to determine where a particular computer is located using its external IP address. The IP address of a computer is, so to speak, the “return address” that is contained in a request to receive a specific page or file.

How to use

Having received a request, the site you are trying to view sends a response to the address that was specified. But, if the territory where you live is included in the “black list”, then you will not receive an answer. And they will send you the picture that I gave just above. In order to obtain the required information, there are several ways, such as working through a proxy server and working through a VPN server, for example. We will consider the second option. I recommend it because it is more stable in terms of operation and usually provides greater speed and information content.

Let's get started. Let’s type FREE VPN SERVER into the search bar, “free” - in our case it means “free”, naturally we are not going to pay the enemies for doing all sorts of minor dirty tricks to us.

I hid the first few answers - they are not quite suitable for us, but we will switch to Japanese development - website http://vpngate.net

The gray square in the picture hides my real IP address, these are insidious samurai trying to intimidate visitors, saying that “we know everything about you.” Well, you know - and okay, there’s nothing wrong with that, thousands of users connect to you every second, including from the USA and the European Union. In its place you will have the flag of your country and your IP address.

In the top menu of the page, select the line “Download” (in English – “Download”) and in the menu the first line – “Download VPN Gate Client”. You can connect to the servers included in the free VPN Gate network in many different ways, but for a Windows-based computer, the one proposed is optimal - it is convenient, easy to set up and, in my opinion, is not inferior to others in speed. On the next page we find and click on the link to download the archive with the files we need:

Don’t worry if your grade in foreign languages at school was, to put it mildly, “not very good,” I will guide you through the entire installation and configuration procedure. So click on the link:

This is a FireFox browser window asking where to save the file. Do you have a different browser? Well then the window will look a little different, but the essence will not change. After downloading the file, and this is a ZIP archive, you need to open it by double-clicking on the name of the just downloaded file. As a result, if you do not have other programs for working with archives installed, you will see something like this:

This is how Windows displays the contents of ZIP archives. If you have a third-party archiver installed and you don’t know how to use it, right-click on the archive file and select “Open with” > “Explorer” from the drop-down menu:

Our task is to extract all files from the archive, so we select:

The result of the command is shown in the following figure. The specific address where the files will be unpacked on my computer has been obscured; yours will probably be slightly different. It is very important for a beginner to leave the “Show extracted files” checkbox in place, then after unpacking you will immediately go to the folder where the files extracted from the archive are located.

Is there a familiar picture just below? No, I'm not repeating myself. These are already unzipped files in a folder on your computer. See the icon next to the application file? Previously it did not exist, since Windows does not fully display file icons inside archives.

Run the file by double clicking the mouse:

This is a standard warning that the file was downloaded from the Internet and may be dangerous. Don’t be alarmed, if you downloaded it from my link, then the file is not infected, although, of course, working on the Internet without an antivirus installed is like Russian Roulette.

In the installer welcome window that opens, click the “Next” button. And in the next window we leave the choice of the top line of options for further actions:

After clicking the “Next” button in the previous window, we get the license agreement:

Of course we agree with him, how could it be otherwise? “Next” again and begin installing the VPN Gate network support client.

The installation process is quite concise and quick, and the inscriptions in the window change about 4-5 times; upon completion, you will be presented with a window like this with a checkmark next to the “Launch VPN Gate client” command.

This is actually what we were trying to achieve. Click “Finish” and get the main program window:

Next is quite a bit. Double-click on the line marked in the previous figure:

Now you see a list of servers through which you can safely and secretly work on the Internet, even if the region where you are now is blocked by all imaginable and unimaginable “sanctions”.

Briefly about the names of the columns by which you can sort the servers in the desired order. The first two are fairly indifferent to us, but the third contains the name of the country or region where the server providing its services is located.

If you choose to sort servers by region of location, click on the name of the column - Region, in this case we have servers from the country JAPAN - Japan at the top of the list. The next column is UPTIME - it tells us the time in hours, how long this server has been working continuously. It is useful because by comparing the operating time with the following column VPN SESSIONS (the number of users working at a given minute), you can imagine whether a given server is viable or not. Maybe something is stuck there, and even though the server has been running for 3 days, it actually has zero users. You should not connect to such a server.

The next column – LINE SPEED – shows the speed at which this gateway operates. This is also very informative data. If you divide the data from the “speed” column by the “number of users” data, you can roughly imagine how quickly you will work through this server, that is, how quickly files will download and pages will open.

If your provider provides you with access to the Internet at a speed of 100 megabits, and the VPN server provides only 3 megabits, then, at best, your speed will be limited to 3 megabits, or maybe a little more. Choose either to use the option I suggested, or buy access to a paid VPN service, or... forget about free access to the network.

I believe you don’t want to pay extra money, so let’s continue with the brief instructions. The third line (line, not column!) in the above window shows in the column a speed of 355 megabits and only 10 users. Click on the LINE SPEED column name and the fastest servers will appear at the top of the list. For the first connection attempt, I chose a “simpler” server with a speed of 92 megabits, divided between 3 users. The server is located in South Korea, and we will try to connect to it. Select the line with the server parameters and double-click on it, or click the “Connect to the VPN Server” button at the bottom of the window:

The next window will prompt you to select some connection parameters:

There are no tips here, except for one thing - try this way and that, putting a “dot” first at the top, then on the bottom line, if the first option ends in failure. The connection process looks like this:

Here's an unsuccessful attempt:

I recommend interrupting the connection process by clicking the Cancel Connection button, as shown in the figure above, and selecting a different server or connection parameters. Unfortunately, the free nature of the network somewhat imposes restrictions on the stability of its operation. If the connection is successful, you will first be shown the following window:

And when the connection is fully established it looks like this:

It means that when you go to a site that previously blocked access by IP address, your computer is now seen as a computer located in a completely different part of the world. The following figure shows your current IP address on the Internet:

Now you can try the connection that failed before, with a 99.9% probability it will work this time, and the machinations of the sharks of imperialism will no longer harm you.

Having completed everything that you previously could not do, disconnect from the VPN Gate - there is no need to work at low speed. To do this, right-click on the line of the active connection and select the line in the “Disconnect All” menu:

After a few seconds, you will be disconnected from the VPN server and will be visible to sites on the Internet under your own address.

In conclusion of this instruction, a couple of general comments.

  1. Don’t be upset if you weren’t able to enter under the flag of the USA or some other very “cool” country. Sometimes servers located in the Russian Federation work just as stably, and are closer and therefore faster. This is especially true for Crimeans, who are harshly treated by Google and other bourgeois mugs.
  2. Unfortunately, periodic disconnection of the connection does happen, but I don’t suggest you work via VPN forever. Once you have downloaded the required file or opened a page, disconnect!
  3. Speed. Yes, speed. This, unfortunately, is the bottleneck in this technology. However, free proxy servers, in my opinion, are even slower, so the choice is yours.
  4. Sometimes, when you access pages that have different language options, you may be redirected to a page with the language of the country under which you entered. This doesn't happen often, but it does happen. Just select a different language on the page, usually at the top of the site there is a menu with flags for different countries - choose your native one, or at least the one whose language you know.
  5. The very last one. Sometimes, after the connection is lost, you will not be able to log into sites on the Internet using your usual address. This also doesn't happen often. But still, if this happens, just restart your computer, or router, if you have one installed.

VPN Gate - Academic Experiment The project is an Internet service as a scientific research project at the Graduate School of the University of Tsukuba, Japan. The purpose of this study is to expand the knowledge of “Global Distributed Open Relay VPN Servers”.

As the author says, the goal of the project was to help users in countries where there is government censorship of Internet traffic. VPN Gate is as free and open to everyone as Tor. Since its launch on Friday, 77,000 users have used the service in just five days, generating about four terabytes of traffic, so there is clearly a demand for free VPNs.

Benefits of VPN Gate.

  • You can bypass the government firewall to view foreign websites (especially relevant after August 1st).
  • You can mask your IP address to hide the source of information transmitted over the Internet.
  • You can protect your Wi-Fi usage with strong encryption.
Unlike existing VPN services, VPN Gate is very different from firewalls.
VPN Gate is free. User registration is also not required.

How does VPN Gate work?

  • VPN Gate consists of many VPN servers that are provided by volunteers all over the world. You can provide your own computer as a VPN server and join this experiment.
  • Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android are supported.
  • Supports SSL-VPN (VPN SoftEther) protocol, L2TP/IPsec protocol, OpenVPN and Microsoft SSTP protocol.
  • Anonymous connections are accepted.
  • No more than one user registration is required.
  • The IP addresses for each VPN server are not fixed.
  • The number of VPN servers increases and decreases every day. This way, all VPN servers are not located on a specific range of IP addresses.
  • While the VPN client connects to the VPN server, the VPN client can access the internet through that VPN server. You can hide your client IP address.
  • When using a VPN server that is physically located abroad, any messages you send are treated as if they originated from that country. Then you can access websites using VPN Gate, which is usually not accessible from your country.

The VPN encrypts and transmits your packets.

If you use a VPN when you surf the Internet, you will be able to:

Bypass government firewall.
If the government's firewall is out of order and some foreign websites are not accessible through the firewall, you can access such websites through foreign VPN servers. Foreign VPN servers will relay your communications to the target web server.
Hide your real IP address.
While the VPN connection is established, all communications' source IP addresses will be replaced with the VPN relay server's IP address. This will be very useful for you because no one else will be able to analyze and track your real IP address.

How to connect?

Now you can create an encrypted channel with a remote server and surf the Internet under someone else’s IP. It is enough to download the configuration .ovpn file and install the openVPN program, with which this file is used. And if you also install the TOR browser, then double protection is provided with two encrypted channels simultaneously.

Statistics

Today: 283,641 users, traffic: 962.20 TB.
A total of 16,408,793 users from 194 countries.

Access the Internet through a VPN, a virtual private network in English abbreviation, basically has two purposes. On the one hand, to gain access to restricted sites either due to censorship, or because from the place where the user is located access to certain services is not authorized (remember, for example, a video from YouTube that was blocked in a certain country due to for copyright). On the other hand, it is able to ensure user privacy by hiding its IP address to access the server. These services exist not only for Windows PCs, but also for Linux, Mac, Android and iPhone.

Security, anonymity and freedom of access: the three main advantages of navigating through a VPN.

This is what you can do when downloading VPN Gate Client, an open source program developed at the Japanese University of Tsukuba, whose the goal is to expand the ideas of a global public network of VPN servers. The team that developed this thought about the following benefits:

  • Avoid navigation censorship.
  • Protect user privacy.
  • Increase security when navigating using wireless networks.

But the advantage we found in this VPN service over other virtual private network is mainly that it works through most firewalls(some VPN programs may cause problems) and is also free.

How does VPN Gate Client work?

This software is based on the following aspects to offer its services:

  • It consists of a network of volunteers around the world who offer their computers as servers.
  • Supports SSL-VPN (SoftEther VPN), L2TP/IPsec, OpenVPN and Microsoft SSTP protocols.
  • Anonymous connections are allowed.
  • No user registration required.
  • Each connection has a dynamic IP address that changes after a certain period of time.
  • VPN servers come and go. That is, we do not always connect to the same servers.
  • Servers process your traffic so you are never hidden behind a real IP address.

Compared to other similar programs such as VPN One Click or UltraVPN, we find that no need for registration and payment, two conditions that compromise one of the purposes of using this service, like the aforementioned privacy.
