What to do if the fan noise in your laptop is loud. Why is the cooler (fan) in a laptop and on a computer very noisy?

Most people, trying to keep up with progress, constantly update their PCs and strive to replace them with new, more advanced ones. However, it is possible that the fan is noisy due to the fact that it is an old model, which seems loud compared to modern, almost silent ones. If the sound appeared recently or unexpectedly, there are several possible faults that could cause it.

Power supply cooler

The cooling system of the power supply may make noise. If the room is dusty or the entire system has been running for several years without replacing elements, contamination even gets there, bypassing all protective barriers. The noise usually comes from this part the most, since the cooler has a large diameter and a very high rotation speed. To clean and purge the power supply, you will have to disassemble it.

Some models can be disassembled quite easily; the main thing is to remember where each bolt comes from. Then, after cleaning and lubricating the necessary parts, assemble the block and install it in place. Options that do not require simple disassembly will have to be changed. In any case, experts advise installing a new power supply every two to three years, regardless of the presence of noise and failures.

Cooling the video card

Problems often arise due to the fact that in most cases it is installed upside down to achieve maximum efficiency. Under large, long-term loads, it can gradually shift, beginning to touch static surfaces with its blades. If this happens, even a fan of such a small diameter can become very noisy.

The easiest way to solve the problem is to buy a new video card. But if desired, the old noisy version can be separated from the motherboard, checked the fan axis and lubricated it. If the axis has shifted, you will have to slightly file the edges of the video card box so that the blades stop touching them.

CPU cooler

The processor cooler also makes noise quite often. It gets the most dust and is the least protected. The main layer accumulates between the fan and the radiator, where air is driven for subsequent cooling. To clean the system, the fan is disconnected and both elements are cleaned separately and lubricated if necessary.

It is highly undesirable to use a vacuum cleaner when cleaning coolers. This is convenient, but sliding dust particles create static electricity, which can damage the system.

Failure fan installed in the system block computer, can lead to damage to several devices at once. It is especially important to monitor the power supply cooler, because overheating of this equipment can cause a large voltage surge.

You will need

  • - Phillips screwdriver;
  • - soldering iron;
  • - knife;
  • - electrical tape.

Instructions

If you notice that your computer's power supply is very hot, be sure to clean the cooler. Turn off the computer and remove the power supply. Be sure to first disconnect the device from the power supply. Disassemble the block by removing several screws using a Phillips screwdriver.

Vacuum the inside of the power supply. Remove any remaining dust using cotton swabs. Soak them in an alcohol solution and wipe the cooler blades. If the fan completely fails, it must be urgently replaced.

Do not turn on a computer with a faulty power supply. This may damage the system board and other important components. Find out the model of the power supply and the type of cooler. Remove the old fan. To do this, unsolder the cooler power wires from the unit board.

Parts. This could be an active cooling system with fans, or a hard drive or hard drive. It's usually very quiet, but if the sound annoys you, you can upgrade to an SSD. This will significantly increase the speed of the sub-disk system.

If everything is fine with your hard drive, this means that the source of the noise is the cooling system fans.

Ways to reduce noise from PC coolers

Noise can be eliminated in a number of ways:

Reduce CPU load;

Replace the cooling system;

Forcefully reduce the rotation speed;

Replace small coolers with larger ones;

Lubricate the fans;

Check fan settings;

Clean the radiator from dust and dirt.

How to remove noise

The more the CPU is loaded, the more heat it generates and the harder its fans work. And if the program on the computer also freezes, then the load increases further. To fix the problem, just close the frozen program.

If you replace the cooling system with a liquid one, you can improve heat dissipation. Moreover, during their operation, you will only hear the sound of the pump running and flowing water.

There are special programs to reduce the rotation speed of coolers. One of the most popular is SpeedFan. It is good because it can control the fan speed automatically.

The larger the fan impeller, the better the cooling effect it provides. At the same time, the number of its rotations is less, and, accordingly, the noise of the computer is reduced. Bearings in fans are also different. Among the two types - rolling and sliding, it is better to choose the first option, since it is more stable in producing sound effects.

Sometimes just lubricating the fan is enough to make it run quieter. Sewing machine oil is suitable for these purposes. If you want to lubricate the CPU cooler, pry off the sticker that is stuck on the bearing. Add some oil there and glue it in place.

The fan setting is very easy to check. You need to go into the computer's BIOS and check if the Smart Fun Control options are enabled in the PC Health Status section. Depending on the type of motherboard, the name of the function may vary. It must be enabled, that is, have the Enable status.

If a lot of dust has accumulated on the radiator, this disrupts the operation of the system and the fans have to work with double force. To clean them, there are special cans of compressed air, which can be purchased at a specialized store.

Knowing ways to reduce computer noise will help you easily deal with this problem. But if your device makes a sound like a squeak or whistle, then your PC needs replacement components. Monitor the condition of your computer or laptop and troubleshoot problems in a timely manner.

While your PC is running, its components become hot. The hard drive, RAM and disk drive generate a small amount of heat, which is dissipated naturally. But the central processor, video card and power supply heat up much more, so cooling radiators with fans (coolers) are installed on them.

It is their sound that is heard during operation. In normal condition, coolers should not interfere with the user. But if one day the hum becomes so strong that it is impossible to concentrate, then it’s time to find out and eliminate the cause of the unpleasant sound.

We decided to fix the problem ourselves, which means we boldly open the side cover and start looking for the culprit. The fastest way to find a noisy fan is to slow down each of them a little on a running PC.

We arm ourselves with a soft brush and lightly touch the impeller to slow down the propellers of the processor, video card, power supply and case (if any). When a particularly noisy “Carlson” is found, turn off the computer and try to eliminate the unpleasant sound.

Small particles of dust inevitably accumulate inside the system unit, forming a whole layer. Therefore, it is very important to monitor the internal state of the PC and clean it on time. Using the same brush and vacuum cleaner, we carefully clean the blades, and at the same time other places where dust is present.

Pay special attention to cooling radiators, as whole bunches of dirt sometimes accumulate in them. After completing the procedure, turn on the PC again and listen. If the fan on the computer makes a lot of noise again, move on to the next step.

The noise level largely depends on the rotation speed. And the speed is adjusted depending on the temperature of the internal environment. Therefore, if one day the system unit starts to buzz, we recommend checking the temperature sensors using any free program.

For example, if the CPU or GPU overheats, you will need to remove the cooler and replace the dried thermal paste. Most likely, after this the efficiency of the radiator will increase, and the rotation speed and noise will return to normal. If the problem does not go away, we dig further.

Low quality parts

It happens that the computer makes a loud noise immediately after purchase or shortly after it. In such a situation, the reason may lie in a cheap cooler. For such parts, the propeller blades have uneven edges, and the radiator sole is too rough. If you come across such a copy, then either put up with the loud sound or replace it with a more advanced model without such defects. For example, for time-tested brands - ZALMAN, Thermaltake, Cooler Master.

Worn out iron

Fan bearings are designed to last a lifetime, but there comes a point when the lubricant in them dries out and the metal parts wear off. The noise of such a cooler will increase gradually, increasing each time. At the initial stage, you can try to extend the service life by adding lubricant to the bearing. To do this:

  • Remove the sticker from the center of the propeller.
  • Place a few drops of machine oil into the hole.
  • Rotate the blades slightly to disperse the oil.
  • Start your computer.

If the wear is small, the noise should decrease. Otherwise you will have to replace the part.

Another reason for a strong hum can be a small-diameter case fan. Often, when choosing housing propellers, they do not think about the size and buy valves of small diameter. But for them to be of any use, the rotation speed must be quite high, which means the sound will be appropriate.

Therefore, when choosing an additional “Carlson”, take the largest possible diameters of the blades, so as not to suffer later with a terribly humming cooler.

You came home, turned on your computer as usual... and heard it start up. the cooler is noisy. Not a single part will just make noise - it means something has happened.

If the cooler is noisy, it is most likely either dusty or faulty(bearings have become loose, grease has dried out). The cooler on the processor, the cooler on the power supply, the cooler on the case, or the cooler on the video card can make noise.

Try it first vacuum cooler radiator to clean it from dust. If the cooler still makes noise after this, you need to lubricate it. The cooler is usually lubricated using machine oil, watch grease or sewing machine oil. Usually do not advise Use Vaseline and automobile motor oils to lubricate the cooler.

Exists two ways lubricate a noisy cooler: removing it and not removing it. If you don't want or are afraid to remove the cooler, take a syringe with a thin needle and fill it with machine oil (there should be a little oil). Use a needle to pierce the cooler sticker and the plastic plug that is located under it (you will have to apply force to do this). Guide the oil from the syringe under the plug and remove the syringe. All! It is recommended to drop a little synthetic glue onto the needle hole to prevent the oil from leaking out.

If you cannot lubricate the cooler this way, unscrew it and remove the sticker. Clean the cooler from dust (don't forget the space between the body and the propeller) and drop a few drops of machine oil into it. You can put the cooler back.

Be careful when working with the power supply cooler! The power supply elements are under high voltage, so before cleaning and lubricating the cooler, you need to disconnect the power cord from the power supply.

If the cooler on the processor is noisy, in addition to lubrication, it can help. The fact is that noise occurs if the cooler does not fit tightly to the processor. Replacing thermal paste will help close the gap between the cooler and the processor, and the noise should decrease.

If after this your cooler does not feel any better, the problem may be wear. Most often the cooler bearing fails. In this case, only an urgent replacement of the cooler will help - preferably with a more modern and silent one. The problem cannot be ignored. If the cooler fails, other components of the computer will begin to overheat, and then you may have to replace not the cooler, but the video card or motherboard.

Most modern coolers are software controlled. If any part of the computer gets hotter than usual, the cooler starts working at high speeds. When the cooler makes noise for this very reason (you know that it is working) - try to look for the problem in another part. It is not recommended to artificially lower the cooler speed, this may cause overheating.

If it makes noise notebook cooler, then most likely the reasons listed above are also to blame. So the “treatment” will be standard - lubricating, cleaning or replacing the cooler. The difference is that you shouldn't take your laptop apart unless you're confident you can put it back together. It is better to entrust the solution to problems with the cooler to a specialist.

Reasons

If you notice that the fan in your laptop is humming, you should first understand the factors that provoke the cause of this phenomenon:

  • incorrectly selected settings that are responsible for the fan rotation speed;
  • some parts of the device become very hot;
  • the cooler impeller bearings are worn out;
  • A large accumulation of dust or dirt has formed on the cooler blades.

The fan in the laptop is humming: what to do?

It's worth noting an important factor right away: if the buzzing starts to appear when you run games or programs that overload the OS, this is normal. In this case, you don't have to worry. But if a small number of the most standard programs are running on the laptop, and the device starts to buzz a lot, then you should pay attention to this nuisance. We offer the most optimal solutions.

If you know exactly why the fan in your laptop is humming and it is overheating, then you need to find out whether you are operating the device correctly. For example, if the laptop is always on a soft and uneven surface (carpet, sofa, blanket, etc.), then the noise indicates that the ventilation holes are blocked, and thus the gadget is actively fighting for its existence. In order to completely eliminate the phenomenon, it will be enough to simply keep the product on a hard and level surface all the time - so that air is supplied to the radiator.

It is also worth noting the fact that special stands for laptops are becoming increasingly popular - they already have a built-in cooler.

Another effective way is to clean the product from dust accumulations. One point needs to be taken into account here. If you are not sure that you can disassemble the device yourself, while the laptop is under warranty, it is best to take it to a service center. There, experienced professionals will do all the work quickly and correctly, and you will be able to avoid sad consequences.

If you are sure that the fan in your laptop is making a loud noise due to dirt, and you know that you can carry out partial disassembly yourself, then we recommend taking a number of actions:

  1. Turn off the laptop, disconnect the adapter and take out the battery.
  2. Unscrew the screws that you will see on the back panel. In some laptop models, such screws can be hidden under special rubber feet - you need to carefully pry them off with a sharp object to get to the screw.
  3. Remove the lid - this must be done very carefully.
  4. Using cotton swabs, carefully remove dirt and dust from the cooling system.
  5. Fine dust can be blown away. Or buy a special can of compressed air in advance - similar products are sold in computer stores.
  6. After all the work is completed, you need to return the cover to its place and tighten the screws.

BIOS update

If even cleaning did not help eliminate the problem, then the problem may be due to incorrect settings. Sometimes such phenomena occur, and they are easy to eliminate. On the official website you need to find a new version of the BIOS, in which all errors will already be corrected. Your task is to download it.
