It is known that large companies primarily use laser printers for office tasks. The fact is that most of these tasks involve printing a large number of text documents, where color and graphics are of secondary importance. However, many offices would like to be able to print color documents, as the high-tech world places increasingly higher demands on the execution of business papers. Color printing is also needed to correctly print web pages and other multimedia content. Installing an inkjet printer in an office is too expensive in terms of consumables. That is why a niche of cheap color laser printers has appeared, which has recently begun to be filled.

In this article we will talk about the new HP Color LaserJet 2550 printer. This printer replaced the previous HP Color LaserJet 2500 series model and is its improved version. The printer comes in three configurations and has the following technical characteristics:

HP-Color-LaserJet.jpg

Profiling

The HP Color LaserJet 2550 is designed for use in offices and at home. The printer falls into this market segment both in terms of cost, which should be in the range of 600-800 dollars, and in terms of weight and dimensions. Of course, due to the decrease in cost, the quality of printing color images has decreased. Therefore, the HP Color LaserJet 2550 is profiled as an entry-level color laser printer for small workgroups and home use. If we compare the HP Color LaserJet 2550 with other HP products, then the profiling motto sounds something like this: “A desktop black-and-white laser printer that can print in color.” This is not so far from the truth, because it is hardly possible to use the color capabilities of the HP Color LaserJet 2550 anywhere else except for office tasks.

Configurations within the series

The HP Color LaserJet 2550 printer series consists of three models. All models do not differ in speed characteristics or print quality. The differences are only in matters of configuration and functionality. The junior model HP Color LaserJet 2550L is the cheapest and, as a result, the simplest. The HP Color LaserJet 2550Ln model differs from the previous model by the presence of a built-in Ethernet print server. The older model of the printer - HP Color LaserJet 2550n - is fully equipped and differs from the previous model by the presence of an additional tray for 800 sheets and color cartridges with a resource increased to 4000 pages. It is worth noting that the low-end and mid-range models come with color cartridges that are good for 2,000 pages. The black cartridge will pull out 5000 pages, regardless of the configuration.

Packaging and delivery

Our test laboratory included the youngest printer model – the HP Color LaserJet 2550L. The printer comes in a large white box that resembles a shipping box for 22-inch monitors. The weight of this box felt like it was filled to the brim with bricks - this is probably why it required at least two people to carry it, and a car with large doorways to transport it. In the box, in addition to the printer itself, there were 4 cartridges and a drum, packed in a special black plastic bag filled with argon. Such packaging of the drum is necessary to keep it in working condition before installing it in the printer, since the interaction of the drum with air shortens its life. Four cartridges were packed in transparent polyethylene and placed in a separate box.

Each cartridge is equipped with protection against toner spillage - in the form of orange plastic. Also, to protect against shocks during transportation, the same plastic was used to secure the moving parts inside the printer itself and the elements on the drum. Putting the printer into working order involves removing all the orange protection from the printer parts, as well as the drum and cartridges. You can read about how to do this in the documentation. Pay special attention to this point, because if you do not unlock all security mechanisms, then you have a chance to break the printer immediately after it is connected to the network. If you have resolved this issue, then you can proceed to installing the cartridges. Installing cartridges and a drum into the printer is done as follows: first you need to turn on the printer, then open its front cover and install the cartridges in accordance with the inscriptions on the cartridge drum. The cartridge drum is already in the printer; it does not need to be installed.

How to install cartridges into a printer is described in detail in the documentation, so we will not focus on this. We only note that after installing each cartridge, you need to close the printer cover and press the drum scroll button. After installing all the cartridges, the print drum is placed in the printer, and at this point the assembly stage can be considered complete. I would like to remind you that the installation of all elements without exception inside the printer occurs without serious effort, so “you don’t have to push if it doesn’t fit” - you just need to make sure that the installation is correct and that all the guides and grooves match. Then you can start installing drivers. A driver CD is also included. Nothing else except the power cord is included in the kit, so you should take care of purchasing an interface cable to connect the printer to the computer - depending on the type of connection you choose, which is described below.

Connecting to a computer and installing drivers

Connecting the printer to the computer went surprisingly well and calmly. HP Color LaserJet 2550L can be connected to a computer via USB or LPT port. In our case, we connected the printer via a USB cable, which, in our opinion, is more correct, since the bandwidth of the USB 2.0 interface is higher than the bandwidth of the LPT port. However, it is worth noting that when connected via an LPT port, the printer can function as a full-fledged DOS printer, since it has its own BIOS and a set of built-in fonts. Before connecting the printer to your computer, you must install the printer driver, which is located on the CD, into the operating system. You also need to install the HP LaserJet ToolBox utility to monitor the printer status and control its functions. When installing a driver, you can select the type of compatibility it supports. By default, the PCL 6 driver is installed, but if you wish, you can install a driver with PostScript language support. After connecting the printer to the computer, WindowsXP itself associates the previously installed driver with the “found device”, and the printer begins to operate in its normal mode.

Control

The printer does not have an LCD display or other status indication devices other than 8 LEDs. 4 of them display the status of each cartridge when broken or replaced, 1 – the condition of the drum, and the remaining 3 are indicators of attention, readiness and continuation. The printer also has a large power button, which is located on the rear panel, and three printer control buttons. The large button on the top panel is designed to start continuing the task. Pink button – to cancel the task. A button with four colored circles is needed to rotate the drum with cartridges.

The printer is controlled using two programs. The control panel built into the driver has the basic set of necessary settings for normal operation of the printer. However, there is no way to view the printer status in the driver control panel, nor are there any fine adjustments. Below is an animated screenshot of the control panel, where you can see all the functions available for control.

As you can see, this degree of control over the printer is clearly not enough for its normal operation, so you must use the HP LaserJet ToolBox program as the main control tool. This program is just a layer between the printer web service and the browser built into the operating system. The entire management and control interface is organized as a system of web pages, and all together it looks like a website for the printer, through which it communicates with the outside world. Is that the guest book is missing. We have made an animated video with all control pages, which you can view. We just warn you right away - the video takes up about 800 KB. We will go into more detail only on some pages.

First of all, the statistics page is interesting. All four cartridges have control over the amount of remaining toner. These statistics are calculated both using data obtained from the sensors built into the cartridges and by the number of pages printed on this cartridge. The black cartridge resource is 5000 pages. It is clearly visible that 905 pages were printed on this cartridge, and that the approximate number of remaining pages is exactly equal to the remainder of 5000, that is, the declared cartridge resource. This suggests that adding toner to the cartridges will be absolutely useless, since the printer may simply refuse to print pages beyond the cartridge's lifespan. However, the scale indicates that the cartridge is 85% used, which equates to 750 pages printed. This means that the scale is calculated from sensors inside the cartridge. The same applies to the three remaining cartridges.

Another interesting page is the page for determining printer problems based on the status of the LEDs on the front panel. A person looks at which lights are on, which ones are blinking, and which ones are off, and displays this sequence in the browser window. A flash program built into the browser interprets this sequence and explains the current situation to the user.

Also, using HP LaserJet ToolBox, you can set the percentage of drum and cartridge wear at which an alert will be generated, clean the drum, reset the printer, configure print modes for different types of paper, as well as print density and quality. Here it is also possible to display complete information about the printer, view the failure log and configure sending emails to two different addresses with alerts about problems with the printer, disable warnings on the local computer to which the printer is connected, and print pages of information. All these features can be very useful for an office printer, so we can say that the HP Color LaserJet 2550L is not in last place in the manageability rating.

Internal structure

Moving on to the description of the internal structure of the printer, I would like to say that the model
HP Color LaserJet 2550L is very much reminiscent of the previous model HP Color LaserJet 2500, both in appearance and in the technical implementation of many aspects. Externally, these series can be distinguished only by the color of the printer cover or by the inscription at the bottom of the printer containing its exact name and model.

logo_on_print.jpg

As already mentioned, the printer is very heavy and quite large in size, but if you compare this model with other color laser printers, it becomes clear that the HP Color LaserJet 2550L is indeed very compact and lightweight.

The small size of the printer was achieved thanks to the reduced size of each cartridge and the correct location of all elements inside the body.

If you look at the diagram of the sheet passing through the printer, it becomes clear how it works.

The HP Color LaserJet 2550 features four-pass printing. The drum with four cartridges fits tightly to the print drum. An image layer corresponding to the color of the cartridge facing it is applied to the print drum by laser. As the print drum rotates, it transfers toner from the cartridges to the transfer belt, which in turn places the toner on the paper. The sheet then passes through an oven where the toner is melted and adhered to the paper. This completes the printing of one sheet.

The stove installed in the HP Color LaserJet 2550L deserves special mention. It was thanks to this that it was possible to significantly increase the speed of printing the first sheet, since the stove can heat up very quickly. The following figure shows the approximate performance of the HP Color LaserJet 2550 when printing the first sheet of paper, compared to standard toner fusing technologies.

As you can see, the heating time of the stove has decreased significantly and has become comparable to the time it takes to load data into the printer for printing - moreover, these processes occur simultaneously. Due to this, the printer has become very economical and almost silent. And indeed, after printing, the printer makes absolutely no sounds, it is quiet and calm. There is one minus - once every 15 minutes the HP Color LaserJet 2550L rotates the drum with cartridges to shake the toner, and if there is absolute silence in the room, then this sound is perceived as an outright rumble for no apparent reason.

I would also like to say a few words about toner. HP has been developing consumables for quite some time and has achieved some success in this area. The chemically synthesized, second-generation polymerized color toner used in HP Color LaserJet 2550L cartridges produces highly vibrant prints that precisely apply the right amount of toner to the right location. A special feature of this toner is the structure of each particle, which consists of two parts. Under the outer shell of the particle there is a color pigment that is applied to the wax core. At the moment the toner is fixed in the oven, the wax melts and firmly adheres the particle to the fibers of the paper. Also, the printer is practically devoid of ozone odor when printing, since due to the drum electrification technology implemented in it, the classic corona wire is replaced by a roller. Therefore, ozone emissions are reduced to zero and the printer does not require an ozone filter.

The amount of memory preinstalled in the printer is enough to perform almost all office tasks, since print data rarely takes up more than 64 MB.

However, if there is not enough memory, it can be added using a special DIMM module, which is installed in a special slot located in the hatch on the right side of the printer.

The physical resolution with which the printer is capable of printing is 600 dpi, however, when using ImageRet 2400 multi-level printing technology, the resolution increases to 2400 dpi.

Print speed

To test the printer's printing speed in black and white mode, we used a text page with 5% coverage. We printed 21 copies of the test page in 103 seconds, while the first 20 seconds from the moment the print job was sent were spent initializing the printer. Thus, in a minute the printer managed to print only 15 copies - instead of the stated 19. Of course, errors could have occurred during the testing process, so we cannot say that the printer cannot print faster, but we could not achieve a better result. As for printing in color, everything is more correct in this matter - the printer met the standard of 4 pages per minute. At the same time, 7 seconds passed from the moment the print job was sent until the stove began to warm up, and the first sheet was taken from the print tray after 25 seconds. In total, the printer took 95 seconds to print 5 copies of the test page.

Print quality

The issue of print quality is a very controversial and voluminous topic. An assessment of the overall print quality may differ significantly from technical analysis, which can be very incorrect in judging quality. In addition, this assessment is based solely on subjective opinion, so you can always say that the author was looking in the wrong place. Therefore, we have prepared several pictures with which we will try to convey to you our impressions of the printer’s operation. Most of the materials were printed on an HP Color LaserJet 2550L, then scanned on an HP ScanJet 3400C scanner at 600 dpi and processed in Adobe Photoshop CS.

We'll start by evaluating printing in black and white. Subjectively, the quality is at a very high level and does not cause any complaints. Let's look at this aspect in more detail.

As you can see, the print quality of large fonts looks simply perfect. All curves are absolutely smooth and the color is uniform. As the font size decreases, the quality does not drop to the smallest of them. At the very end of the list is a font that can only be read on paper under a strong magnifying lens. Nevertheless, the print quality at this resolution turned out to be at a very good level, which means it is possible to print with excellent detail.

With color everything is a little more complicated. Since each color in laser printing is made up of four color components, it is very important for a color laser printer to properly combine all colors. Color components are formed into color pixels in a manner very similar to offset printing. That is why an image printed on a color laser printer consists of small dots that can be seen when magnified. For the test we used the following test page.

The image above was also printed and scanned, so it can be considered an example of the print quality of the HP Color LaserJet 2550L. The same page is available in 5100x7020 resolution

The HP 2550L printer is a color laser printing machine designed for small businesses. There is a built-in Ethernet card that allows you to connect the device to a local office network. Print speed in color mode is 4 ppm, in monochrome – 19.

To work, you need to buy a toner cartridge and an image drum for the HP Color LaserJet 2550L printer. More precisely, to create a full-color picture, four toner cartridges are required - black, yellow, magenta and cyan. And when it comes time to buy new consumables, the price of the original models becomes a serious problem.

Compatible HP LaserJet 2550L Toner Cartridges

The Tonerman company offers an alternative - affordable and reliable cartridges of its own production. We guarantee the stability of their work, as we are confident in the quality:
