Today I will tell you how to make a comic book out of an ordinary photograph in the style of Roy Lichtenstein, the great master of pop art. The main thing in this lesson is working with a pen; for a beginner it’s a rather complex instrument, but after mastering it there’s nothing to worry about.

1. Open the photo and prepare it for outlining. Create a fill layer Layer -> New Fill layer -> Solid Color -> Select the color white, create another layer and name it “outline”. White layer switch to stealth mode.

2. Select a tool Pen Tool , set it up as shown in my picture. Select the color of our outline - black, or just click D. We zoom in on the area where we want to start outlining; I usually start with the eyebrows or eyes.

3. We begin to outline the eyelashes; it will take some time to get used to this tool. When the beginning of the line and the end are connected, press right click mouse over the layout and select Fill Path and select the default values.

4. Now we erase our line by pressing the button Delete. We get a black outline of the eyelashes. Now you can see how it will look on a white background. To do this, turn on the visibility mode of the second layer. If everything suits you, we draw further.

5. You can use a tool for the eyes Ellipse Tool, selecting the same parameters as for Pen Tool. We create new layer, call it “eye” and draw the outline of the eye with this tool.

6. Now choose Eliptical Marquee Tool and select the area inside our future eye. Click Delete. Remove selection (Ctrl+D) and draw the pupil using Ellipse Tool.

7. Zoom in, erase everything unnecessary with an eraser and duplicate this layer for the second eye. After this, merge the “contour” layer and both “eyes” Layer -> Merge Down. (Ctrl+E)

8. We continue to outline the photo using Pen Tool, everything is exactly the same as in point 3. Sometimes look at the result, including the filled layer. When drawing the outline of the face and arms, start with an indentation so that these parts of the body do not appear massive.

9. Often you will have to figure out the contours, for example, the contours of the hair. Personally, I rely on my taste, and you can outline by following the dark areas.

10. Let's start adding color. Choosing a tool Magic Wand Tool and click on the face area. The area must be closed; if it is not closed, use another tool. Holding a key shift, click on all the areas that need to be painted in this color. Choose Select -> Modify -> Expand and set it to 1-2 pixels.

11. Now press Layer->New Fill layer -> Color. Set the color to white. If required areas are not painted this color, select a brush white and tint it manually on the same layer. If you need to remove something, then erase it with an eraser.

12. Create new document the same size as ours and paint it light grey colour(R=198, G=198, B=198). Then apply a filter: Filter->Pixelate->Color Halftone. We set angles to 45, Max radius 7.

13. Click Select->Color range select black color with a pipette and set Fuzziness maximum.

14. Choose Layer -> New Fill Layer -> Color. We choose red. Right-click on this layer and select Duplicate Layer. Here we select our document where we drew the outline; I call it “Comic”.

15. Now distribute the layers as in the figure. Our red circles should be on top of the white face layer. Click Layer->Create Clipping Mask. Now the texture is distributed only in this area.

16. We repeat the same thing, only now with the rest of the body. Duplicate the layer with the circle texture where necessary. You should get something like this.

17. The finishing touches remain. Add shine to your lips and eyes, draw a background, a cloud with an inscription, and you can go drink beer with a sense of accomplishment.

In this tutorial we will create a page from a comic magazine using a regular photo. Filters will help us achieve the desired result. Photoshop programs By mixing them, we can get an interesting pattern effect.

Many of you will think that to get a similar result it is enough to use one filter, for example Magic Pencil(Graphic Pen Filter) or Halftone Pattern(Halftone Pattern Filter). But I am sure that this will not be enough for a quality result.

In order to decorate the photo after processing, we will also use the Comic Font themed font, the texture of old paper and various brushes.
Before writing this lesson, I read other similar tutorials. You can also check out these.
This is what will happen as a result this lesson.

Lesson materials:

Open in a new file Photoshop image Schoolgirl.
Besides being a really high quality photo, this image has all the elements of a comic book style: a cool character, movement, and a good balance between the focal and background elements.
So take note, not all photos are suitable for this lesson, take time to look for interesting characters!

Duplicate the girl layer. Apply correction to the duplicate Brightness\Contrast(Brightness/Contrast). You will have to add this adjustment twice. The settings are shown below as an example.

Make a copy of the previous layer and desaturate it. To do this, go to Image - Correction - Desaturate(Image - Adjustments - Desaturate). Name this layer "Black and White".

Make a duplicate of the decolorized layer. Set the default foreground and background colors (black and white). Switch to Filter - Sketch - Ink(Filter - Sketch - Stamp).

Translator's note: Based on the screenshot, the author did not use the “Ink” filter, but the “Linocut” filter.
Set the settings shown in the figure. Then change blending mode(blending mode) of this layer on Darkening the base(Color Burn).

Duplicate the last layer. Go to (Filter - Sketch - Halftone Pattern). The settings are shown below. The blending mode of this layer should also be Darkening the base(Color Burn).

Duplicate the "Black and White" layer. Switch to Filter - Sketch - Magic Pencil(Filter - Sketch - Graphic Pen).

Translator's note: in my version of the program, the filter that the author uses is called not “Magic Pencil”, but “Mascara”.

This Photoshop filter has three provisions: Stroke length(Stroke Lenght) Tone balance(Light/Dark Balance) and Direction of strokes(Stroke Direction). In the image below you can see the values I applied for these parameters. Set the blending mode for the layer Replacing with dark(Darken).

Now make a copy of the original layer with the girl. Go to filter Magic pencil(Graphic Pen) and use specified settings. Set the blending mode Replacing with dark(Darken).

After applying all these filters, our image should look like this:

Translator's note: Layers with filters should be arranged in the order they were added (the layer with the last filter at the top of the layers palette).

Duplicate the original girl layer. Switch to Filter - Sketch - Photocopy(Filter - Sketch - Photocopy). Set the blending mode for this layer (blending mode) Darkening the base(Color Burn).

It may seem to you that there are too many filters, but each of them makes its own additions and adjustments, for example, the last filter showed the outline of a girl, which made the image even more like a drawing.
You can add or adjust the resulting outline on the “Photocopy” layer. To do this, activate the tool Brush(Brush tool), set the foreground color to black, brush type - hard round, brush size 5 px. Draw lines where you think necessary.

Approaching this step, we have already used a lot of filters from the palette Sketch(Sketch). You may ask: which one will be next? And I will answer - Halftone pattern(Halftone Pattern), but it will serve a little differently than before.
So, create a new layer on top of all other layers and fill it with white. Switch to Filter - Sketch - Halftone Pattern(Filter - Sketch - Halftone Pattern). Pattern type select " Circle" (Pattern Type: Circle). After applying the filter, set the blending mode for this layer Darkening the base(Color Burn).

Let's diversify our work by adding Rays brushes. Download the brush set and install it. Then create a new layer (on top of the previous ones) and use the brush you like on it, the color of the rays is white. Apply a filter to the rays Halftone pattern(Halftone Pattern) with old settings. Set the blending mode of the rays layer Linear light(Linear Light) opacity(opacity) lower to 50%.

Add to Rays Layer Layer mask(Layer Mask) by clicking on the "Add layer mask" icon at the bottom of the layers panel. Click on the layer mask thumbnail and paint the silhouette of a girl on it with a soft black brush.

Translator's note: You can also use a vector mask for the thin circles layer.

Let's add color.
Create a new layer on top of all previous ones. Name it "Color". Now activate the tool Brush(Brush tool). Decide in which areas of the picture you want to add color accents, this is individual and depends only on you. If you are using multiple colors, then you need to add each color on a separate layer. For my multi-colored layers I used blending modes Multiplication(Multiply) and Overlap(Overlay). Also experiment with opacity(opacity) of these layers.

What's a comic without captions? In this step we will add text to our artwork using the Comic Book Font.
In my work, I wrote the word "Bang" and added the date to the bottom left of the image.
You can find other similar fonts on the Internet, or design the inscription to your own taste. You can also use one of these themed Brushes.

Translator's note: In order to add an inscription, create a new layer, activate the "Horizontal Text" tool and write the text of your callout.

Create a new layer. Activate the tool Fill(Paint Bucket Tool) and fill the layer with white.
Go to Settings Layer Style (Layer Style). Set the parameter value filling(fill) for the layer at 0%.
Select from menu Stroke(Stroke); stroke position - inside; size - 10px. White color.
Then go to settings Inner glow(Inner Glow); blending mode - normal(normal) (100%); black color; size(size) - 15 pixels; range(range) - 1%.

The final step remains. Open the Old Paper image and add it to your work on a new layer. Set the blending mode of the paper texture layer to - Multiplication(Multiply), and lower the opacity to 60%.
In order to get a more interesting result, you can add spots, more inscriptions or colors.
That's it, I hope you enjoyed doing this tutorial!

Comics have always been a very popular genre. Films are made based on them, games are created based on them. Many people would like to learn how to make comics, but not everyone can do it. Not everyone except Photoshop masters. This editor allows you to create pictures of almost any genre without the ability to draw.

In this lesson we will convert an ordinary photograph into a comic using Photoshop filters. You'll have to work a little with a brush and eraser, but it's not at all difficult. in this case.

Our work will be divided into two large stages - preparation and actual drawing. In addition, today you will learn how to properly use the opportunities that the program provides us.

Preparation

The first step in preparing to create a comic is to find a suitable photo. It is difficult to determine in advance which image is ideal for this. The only advice that can be given in this case is that the photo should contain a minimum of areas with loss of detail in the shadows. The background is not important; we will remove unnecessary details and noise during the lesson.

In this lesson we will work with this picture:

As you can see, there are areas in the photo that are too shaded. This is done intentionally to show the dangers of this.

  1. Making a copy of the original image using hotkeys CTRL+J.

  2. Change the blending mode for the copy to "Base Lightening".

  3. Now you need to invert the colors on this layer. This is done with hotkeys CTRL+I.

    It is at this stage that shortcomings appear. Those areas that remain visible are our shadows. There are no details in these places, and subsequently it will turn out to be a “mess” on our comic. We will see this a little later.

  4. The resulting inverted layer must be blurred according to Gauss.

    The filter must be adjusted in such a way that only the outlines remain clear, and the colors remain as muted as possible.

  5. Apply an adjustment layer called "Isohelia".

    In the layer settings window, using the slider, we maximize the contours of the comic book character, while avoiding the appearance of unwanted noise. You can take the face as a standard. If your background is not monochromatic, then we do not pay attention to it (the background).

  6. Any noise that appears can be removed. This is done with a regular eraser on the lowest, original layer.

You can also remove background objects in the same way.

Palette

Before we start coloring our comics, we need to decide on a color palette and create samples. To do this, you need to analyze the picture and divide it into zones.

In our case it is:

  1. Leather;
  2. Jeans;
  3. Mike;
  4. Hair;
  5. Ammunition, belt, weapon.

In this case, we do not take the eyes into account, since they are not very pronounced. We are also not interested in the belt buckle yet.

For each zone we determine its own color. In this lesson we will use these:

  1. Leather - d99056;
  2. Jeans - 004f8b;
  3. Mike - fef0ba;
  4. Hair - 693900 ;
  5. Ammunition, belt, weapon - 695200 . Please note that this color is not black, this is a feature of the method we are currently studying.

It is advisable to choose colors that are as saturated as possible - after processing they will fade significantly.

We are preparing samples. This step is not mandatory (for an amateur), but such preparation will make the work easier in the future. To the question “How?” We will answer below.

It's time to tell you why we created this palette. During work, it becomes necessary to frequently change the color of the brush (or other tool). Samples save us from having to look for the right shade in the picture every time; we just press ALT and click on the desired circle. The color will automatically switch.

Designers often use such palettes to save color scheme project.

Setting up tools

When creating our comic, we will use only two tools: a brush and an eraser.

Comic book coloring

So, we have completed all the preparatory work on creating a comic in Photoshop, now it’s time to finally color it. This work is extremely interesting and exciting.

Effects

We have sorted out the color design of our image, then comes the stage of giving it that very comic book effect for which everything was started. This is achieved by applying filters to each color layer.

First, let's convert all layers into smart objects so that, if desired, you can change the effect or change its settings.

1. Right-click on the layer and select "Convert to Smart Object".

We perform the same actions with all layers.

2. Select the layer with the skin and set the main color, which should be the same as on the layer.

3. Go to the Photoshop menu "Filter - Sketch" and look there "Halftone Pattern".

4. In the settings, select the pattern type "Dot", set the size to the minimum, raise the contrast to approximately 20 .

The result of these settings:

5. The effect created by the filter must be softened. To do this, let's blur the smart object according to Gauss.

6. Repeat the effect on ammunition. Don't forget about setting the main color.

7. To effectively apply filters on hair, it is necessary to reduce the contrast value to 1 .

8. Let's move on to the clothes of the comic book character. We use the same filters, but select the pattern type "Line". We select the contrast individually.

Apply the effect to a T-shirt and jeans.

9. Let's move on to the background of the comic. Using the same filter "Halftone Pattern" and Gaussian blur, we create the following effect (pattern type – circle):

This completes the coloring of the comic. Since we have all our layers converted to smart objects, we can experiment with different filters. This is done like this: double-click on the filter in the layers palette and change the settings of the current one, or select another one.

The possibilities of Photoshop are truly endless. He is capable of even such a task as creating a comic book from a photograph. We can only help him using our talent and imagination.

Open the Schoolgirl image.

Step 2

Duplicate the girl layer and change the Brightness/Contrast of the duplicate. Adjust the parameters so that the result is as shown in the figure:

Step 3

Duplicate the previous layer and desaturate it Image ? Adjustments? Desaturate:

Step 4

Duplicate the desaturated layer and go to the menu: Filter? Sketch? Stamp Filter. Before doing this, set the Foreground color to black and the Background color to white. The blending mode for this layer is Color Burn, 100%:

Step 5

Duplicate the desaturated layer again and apply the Graphic Pen Filter to it. This filter consists of three parameters: the Stroke Lenght, the Light/Dark Balance and the Stroke Direction. Apply this filter twice with various settings as shown in the image. Then change the blending mode for this layer to Darken.

Step 6

Duplicate the original girl layer and apply the Graphic Pen Filter to it with different settings. Change the blending mode for this layer to Darken 100%:

Step 7

After applying all the filters, your image will look like this:

Step 8

Duplicate the original girl layer again and apply the Photocopy Filter from the Sketch filters category to it. Change the blending mode for this layer to Color Burn 100%.

Step 9

By applying the last filter, the image looks like a sketch. You can adjust the outline of the lines that appeared after applying this filter with a black round brush of 5 pixels.

Step 10

We have already applied several filters and now the Halftone Pattern filter is next. Create a new layer on top of the other layers and fill it with white. To this layer apply the Halftone Pattern filter, Pattern Type Circle filter. Change the blending mode of this layer to Color Burn 100%.

Step 11

If desired, you can add Rays brushes to the image. Draw with a brush on a new layer, the brush color is white, and after painting, apply the Halftone Pattern filter to it with the same settings as in the previous step. The center of the Rays brush should be in the center of the image. For the rays brush layer, change the Blend Mode to Linear Light 55%.

Step 12

Add a layer mask to the layer with the “Rays” brushes, and on the layer mask with a soft round brush of black color, erase the “Rays” brush, making the girl visible. This way, the girl will appear in the foreground, and behind her there will be a brush drawing. Do the same with the layer to which the Halftone Pattern Layer(circle pattern) filter was applied.

Step 13

Create a new layer on top of all existing layers and name it Color Layer. Using the Brush Tool, add color where you want it to be. Draw on separate layers, changing their blending mode to Multiply or Overlay with different opacity parameters:

Step 14

At the end of this lesson, we will complete the comic book effect by adding text, which will be designed in the style of a familiar comic book. Download the Comic Book Font and write the word "Bang" with it. Using the same font, add the date to the bottom left of the image. If you wish, you can add comic-style brushes to the illustration. To give your illustration a vintage feel, use the texture of old paper. For the paper layer, change the blending mode to Multiply 60%. You can also add Spot brushes.
